The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. The Village Community Boathouse is offering free public rowing on Prospect Park Lake this summer.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the ample waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary. Sessions run from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays from June 10 to August 26. Boats are launched from the ramp on Well House Drive in the southwest corner of the lake. The temporary boathouse–two shipping containers–is located just across from the ramp.

Who Can Participate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver; kids and teens younger than 18 must be escorted by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

What You'll Row
We use a diverse fleet of traditional wooden rowing boats, built by volunteers and similar in shape and appearance to those used in the early days of park rowing.

How the Villiage Community Boathouse is Funded
We are a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. The park is surrounded by a large and diverse population that needs more access to on-water recreation.Your donations make our program possible. If you're looking to volunteer, please email volunteers@vcb.nyc.

Join the Village Community Boathouse for Community Rowing in traditional Whitehall gigs, captained by experienced New York Harbor coxswains. The Village Community Boathouse offers free community rowing on Sundays at noon and on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., through November 12, 2017.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary, and lifejackets will be provided. Children (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent. All participants must sign a liability waiver.

Please note: It is very important that you arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m., as the Village Community Boathouse pair their boats, coxswains, and rowers by 12:30. Boats leave right after for the afternoon. In some cases, the Villiage Community Boathouse will have additional boats leaving at a later time but the chances to get out on a boat then are much slimmer. Please check the Villiage Community Boathouse's social media feeds on Facebook or Twitter for possible last-minute changes due to weather or other circumstances. Or, call (212) 229-2059.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!
