Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors in Sunlight, Water and Gravity. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.

We will take a hike to look for seeds in their many forms from acorns to pinecones to walnuts. Using our high-powered microscopes, we will then take a closer look to discover how these amazing seeds can move and grow into new flowers and trees.

As part of Garden Days at Fort Tryon Park, join public garden designer Ronda M. Brands for a behind-the-scenes look at the design and planting scheme of the three-acre Heather Garden with its 550 varieties of plants, trees, and shrubs.

Brands and colleague Lynden Miller have served as garden consultants to the Fort Tryon Park Trust since 2009. Learn how they worked with the park's gardeners and the Olmsted Brother's original 1935 plant list to strengthen and rejuvenate the Heather Garden to make it a destination with horticultural interest in every season. Spectacular landscapes and panoramic views await you!

Come to Freshkills Park for an opportunity to discover the trails and hills of the landfill-to-park project!

We’re opening up the future North Park and miles of additional interior trails for walking, bicycling, jogging and exploring on two Sundays this summer, on June 7 and August 2.

At each event, Kayak Staten Island will lead a free kayaking program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Fresh Kill and Main Creek waterways. Bicycles will be available for riding around the trails, and NYC Audubon will lead a nature hike near the creek. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own cameras to photograph the park in progress. Pack a picnic or purchase food and non-alcoholic beverages from event food trucks.

A bus to the scenic overlook will run throughout the day. Shuttles into the site will run continuously from parking at Wild Avenue to the creek of North Park, and on a scheduled basis from St. George Ferry Terminal. Visitors, including bicycle riders and dog owners, can enter the site directly at 350 Wild Avenue and do not need to take a shuttle.

The site will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the last entrance at 3:30 p.m. Visit Freshkill's Discovery Day for more information.
