Join us for a bird walk at The Battery with NYC Audubon! Explore the diversity of migrating birds that find food and habitat in The Battery. Last spring's walks included sightings of a Blue Grosbeak, a Summer Tanager, and 21 other bird species.

The walk will be led by Gabriel Willow, an educator from NYC Audubon. Gabriel is an experienced birder and naturalist, and is well-versed in the ecology and history of New York City. He has been leading walks for NYC Audubon for more than ten years, guiding new and experienced birders in all five boroughs and beyond.

After the walk, we hope you will linger to enjoy the nation's largest perennial garden open 365 days free to the public. Learn more about The Battery at www.thebattery.org.

The Battery is located at the southern tip of Manhattan. Take the 1 train to South Ferry, the R train to Whitehall Street, or the 4 or 5 train to Bowling Green.

Part of the Wilder LIC Group Exhibition, join artists Thomas Choinacky and Christopher Kennedy for an interactive workshop and ecological field study of the Windmill Community Garden. Help us archive and engage with the garden’s multispecies life. Learn strategies for bioremediation, wild plant mapping, soil quality testing, and assessing the health of urban landscapes. We’ll pay particular attention to the unwanted plants and organisms we consider weeds, noting the edges and borders of the garden as spaces for interspecies collaboration and indicators of climate change adaptation. As we observe together, we’ll also experiment with forms of movement and dance to communicate with plants and other nonhumans – imagining the body as a site for scientific inquiry. At the end of the workshop we hope you’ll feel inspired to conduct similar field studies in your own neighborhood, and add to our collective research on NYC’s changing ecology.

The workshop is open to all, no prior knowledge needed! We encourage you to wear clothing you can move in, and don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Part of the Wilder LIC Group Exhibition, join artists Thomas Choinacky and Christopher Kennedy for a walking tour of Long Island City’s overlooked green spaces and marginal ecologies. Starting at the Windmill Community Garden, we’ll begin to observe, engage with, and map nearby vacant lots, tree pits, sidewalk cracks and highway medians. Together we’ll learn how to identify a range of spontaneous urban plants (aka weeds) and experiment with forms of movement and dance to engage with each weedy space and territory. Along the way we’ll also consider how the language we use to classify these organisms as “exotic” and “alien” has troubling parallels to policies and practices used to marginalize immigrant communities. Despite their status as invasive or dangerous, these plants have immense value and can teach us about climate change adaptation and how to survive NYC’s harsh urban conditions. By the end of the workshop we hope to develop ideas for how to map multispecies life in LIC, and a new understanding of what constitutes a so-called green space or landscape in NYC.

The workshop is open to all, no prior knowledge needed! We encourage you to wear clothing you can move in, and don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Presented in partnership with Queens Action Council (QuAC) and Hellgate Farm.

The inaugural Queens Green Day is a celebration of all things “green” – local ecological initiatives, food justice, gardening, urban farming, and healthy living including bike safety and advocacy. Main partners Queens Action Council (QuAC) and Hellgate Farm offer interactive presentations complemented by a variety of art-making, activities, and food demos from partners like: City Harvest, Bike New York, The Connected Chef, Smiling Hogshead Farm, Mechanical Gardens bike repair, and City Parks Foundation’s Green Girls and Coastal Classroom programs. 2018 Emerging Artist Fellows Joe Riley and Audrey Snyder will also run a natural-dye textile workshop for their upcoming installation for The Socrates Annual exhibition. On stage, we explore ways diverse cultures honor the Earth including an Eastern woodlands Indigenous presentation by Tecumseh Ceaser, kicked off by Lauren Hale Biniaris’ performance of Hungry, which uses dance, gesture, and writing to explore the interconnected worlds of seeds, sustenance, hunger, and hope.
