Greenbelt Recreation Center: Tai Chi for Beginners

Shape Up NYC is a free, drop-in fitness program with locations across the five boroughs. You do not need to be a member of a recreation center in order to attend a class, though you must bring a lock for classes held at recreation centers. Our fitness instructors know how to make fitness fun!

Description: Learn the basics of Tai Chi. Originally used to train soldiers, Tai Chi is now more commonly practiced as an internal art — a way of focusing the mind, while training the body — meditation thru movement. Tai Chi (perhaps surprisingly) provides an excellent full-body workout while also being relaxing, and can easily be maintained as a healthy life-long practice. The countless benefits of Tai Chi include increased strength, conditioning, balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina, range of motion, bone density, joint lubrication, and mind/body connection; reducing blood pressure, pain, stiffness, and stress hormones — all of which extends to less injurous falls, more confidence, peace of mind throughout the day, and improved sleep at night.
