New York Junior League Revitalizes Sara D.
This past Saturday, Manhattan Borough Commissioner William Castro joined President of the New York Junior League Lisa Hathaway Stella, and Council Member Margaret Chin at Sara D. Roosevelt Park to thank NYJL volunteers and celebrate the completion of the recent refurbishment. This marked the 20th anniversary of the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project.
As part of the festivities, a tree was planted as part of the City’s MillionTreesNYC efforts. There was activities including a Chinese dragon dance, face painting, origami, a cooking demonstration and a photography exhibition by students from P.S. 64.
Throughout five weekends in April and May, the NYJL’s Playground Improvement Project committee teamed up with approximately 1,000 volunteers, including NYJL members, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation employees, corporate sponsors, service organizations, neighborhood residents and children. Together, they worked to renovate Sara D. Roosevelt’s playgrounds, athletic courts, and gardens.
Collectively, the volunteers planted 7,000 bulbs, 400 perennials, 300 shrubs and 12 trees as part of MillionTreesNYC, fulfilling the promise to continue greening New York City. Thousands of dollars and over 12,500 volunteer hours were contributed to ensure the success of this latest Playground Improvement Project.
The New York Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
