A Photo Contest To Salute The Parks Of Queens
Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce, in partnership with the Queens Courier, a photography contest celebrating Queens’ parks. Amateur photographers are invited to submit photos to A Salute to Queens Parks Photography Contest through September 4, 2007. Winning entries will be exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art and the Arsenal Gallery, as well as published in the Queens Courier and a book.
“Queens is a borough of diversity—you can see it in its people, its neighborhoods…and its parks.” said Queens Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. “We are eager to see the parks through the lens of the community—the park users themselves. The photographs are sure to reflect the beauty and diversity for which the borough is so proud. We thank the Queens Courier for sponsoring this exciting project.”
“The Queens Courier looks forward to honoring photographers that can capture the beauty of Queens’ parks and their surrounding environment,” said Associate Publisher Joshua Schneps. “Our borough is home to some of the City’s best parks. Through exposure in our newspaper and exhibitions at the Queens Museum of Art and the Arsenal Gallery, we will recognize and bring attention to all that Queens has to offer.”
All photos must be taken in a Queens park or playground, at a Parks operated facility or a Parks sponsored event. A panel of experts in photography, art and parks will judge entries in four categories and three age groups. Categories include Black and White, People, Nature/Landscape, and Places/Landmarks. Age groups are divided into Youth (ages 12 and under), Teen (ages 13-17), and Adult (ages 18 and over). One winner from each age group in each category will be selected.
Winning entries will be announced and awarded prizes on September 30, 2007. The winning and runner-up entries will be framed and matted for exhibits in both the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park. The photographs will also be published in a special section of the Queens Courier and A Salute to Queens Parks: A Photo Book.
THIRTEEN YEARS AGO IN THE PLANT
(Thursday, February 24, 1994)
Forests of New York City, a new brochure published by Parks’ Natural Resources Group (NRG), has been created to give New Yorkers a better understanding and appreciation of the city’s urban woodlands. Readers of the illustrated, 21-page pamphlet can learn where to visit the different type of forests in the city and what sorts of wildlife they might see there. The guide also tells how forest ecosystems evolve.
QUOTATION FOR THE DAY
“If bread is the first necessity of life,
recreation is a close second.”
