Don’t Be A Sofa Spud In 2010 – Get Fit For Free During BeFitNYC Week!IMMEDIATE
Monday, January 11, 2010
Today, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe launched BeFitNYC, a weeklong “Open House” at recreation centers across the city, with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn at Chelsea Recreation Center.
“This week Parks is opening up recreation centers citywide to let New Yorkers see for themselves just how easy it is to begin the new year by getting in shape,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Some of the city’s finest fitness opportunities are being showcased and we encourage New Yorkers to learn more by checking out our online fitness search engine ‘BeFitNYC.’ Now there’s no excuse to be a sofa spud – with the click of a button, you can find ice skating, soccer, swimming, hockey and sled hockey, basketball, running programs, exercise classes and more in your own neighborhood or anywhere else. Start 2010 on the right note by fulfilling that New Year’s Resolution to enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle!”
From Monday, January 11, through Saturday, January 16, Parks’ 30 centers invite the community in, for free, to try that class they’ve always wondered about. To kick off the week, table tennis pro and hiphop sensation Wally Green and SPiN co-founder Bill Mack hammed it up for health and New York City with a ‘smash hit’ exhibition game.
Parks will be highlighting a recreation center in each borough. On Tuesday, St. Mary’s Recreation Center in the Bronx will offer yoga, water aerobics, mamba lessons, karate and more to visitors. On Wednesday, the Greenbelt Recreation Center on Staten Island will provide patrons with the chance to try core training classes, teen fitness and yoga. On Thursday, St. John’s Recreation Center in Brooklyn will feature Tai Chi for seniors, aerobics classes and weight room and cardio machine demonstrations. Queens’ Al Oerter Recreation Center will showcase dance classes from salsa to hiphop and provide visitors with a fitness evaluation that looks at body fat, heart rate and more.
The “Open House” continues on the first Monday of each month at all recreation centers citywide for the rest of the year. For pennies a day, adults can enjoy access to recreation centers all over the city at one low price! Annual recreation center memberships are $75 for adults, $10 for seniors and free for children under 18. For more information about BeFitNYC, visit www.nyc.gov/parks, keyword: BeFitNYC, or call 311.
