Join Van Cortlandt House Museum's Director Laura Carpenter Myers for a special tour of the house in celebration of Archtober 2018!
The tour will focus on the elements of the design, construction, and finishings that reflect the Van Cortlandt family's Dutch heritage. In spite of of having ancestors who helped to found New Amsterdam and a very Dutch surname, Frederick Van Cortlandt chose a decidedly English style of architecture, with a "touch of Dutch" for the house he had built on his wheat plantation starting in 1748.
On her tour, Ms. Carpenter Myers will highlight these Dutch features and discuss the design choices of the two prominent residents of the house, James and Augustus Van Cortlandt. These sons of Frederick and Frances Jay Van Cortlandt were able to make their mark on their father's house with finish carpentry and decorative touches throughout the house. James' ownership of the house began in 1750 upon his father's death. He inherited an unfinished house not ready for habitation. His brother Augustus inherited the house after his brother's death in 1781.
This special tour will go "behind the ropes" for a look at seldom seen features of the house.
