New GreenThumb calendar helps New Yorkers find community garden events in their neighborhoods

With GreenThumb’s 40th community gardening season underway, NYC Parks is encouraging New Yorkers to check out one of the many events planned in gardens across the boroughs this year. To help New Yorkers explore their community gardens, Parks has launched a calendar of upcoming community garden events happening across the city through October.

“You don’t need to be a gardener to take advantage of your local community garden,” said NYC Parks GreenThumb Director Bill LoSasso. “Our gardens hold events all season long to bring the neighborhood together and show off their hard work. From plant giveaways, to concerts and art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone!”

For a complete list of this month’s 40th anniversary community garden events, visit our GreenThumb calendar here. The calendar will be updated with new events throughout the garden season, which runs through October. On July 14th, GreenThumb will hold its first Open Garden Day, opening 40+ gardens to the public for tours and activities.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of GreenThumb, which was established by the City in 1978 in response to the community gardening movement. Today, GreenThumb is the largest community gardening program in the country, with more than 550 community gardens across the city, totaling over 100 acres. GreenThumb provides materials, programming and technical support to these gardens, as well as monthly workshops. GreenThumb’s 22,000 community gardeners produce more than 87,000 pounds of food each year.
