Parks Salutes Its Employees Of The Month (Part III)

Kenneth Williams is the Commissioner’s Employee of the Month for August.

Kenny started his career in June of 2012 as the GreenThumb Manhattan Outreach Coordinator. In this role, he works with Manhattan community gardeners, Parks employees, and the public. He conducts site visits, distributes supplies, and conducts workshops and other events.

Though he has been at Parks for just over a year, Kenny has handled many issues and projects that would be challenging for a much more seasoned employee. He always has a smile on his face, and is very popular with fellow staff, supervisors, and our Parks constituents. He could be known as Mr. Customer Service for the accommodating and friendly manner in which he deals with our diverse coterie of gardeners and park attendees.

Kenny almost singlehandedly organized the successful “Summer Fest” event held on July 14. With little assistance, and a limited budget, he created and oversaw a successful event that was attended by hundreds of people. He worked with Manhattan community gardeners, local businesses, and volunteers to successfully execute an all day festival highlighting the important and unique work of GreenThumb. This event provided fresh, healthy food and recreational opportunities to residents of Harlem and the rest of New York City.

Kenny is a born-and-raised resident of the Bronx, and graduated with honors from Middlebury College in Vermont last spring. Even though he just recently graduated, he was already invited back to Middlebury to speak at the college about social justice issues. He hopes to return to graduate school at some point, but for now is enjoying working at Parks at Manhattan’s Community Gardens.

For his hard work and dedication, Kenny was nominated by outgoing Director of GreenThumb Edie Stone, Deputy Commissioner Larry Scott Blackmon, and Commissioner Veronica White.

Eileen Remor is the Management Employee of the Month for July. Eileen won the award along with PEP Officer Betty Anne Thomas.

Eileen began her career with Parks in 1999 as an Outreach Coordinator in Queens and Manhattan. In 2001, she became the Volunteer Events Manager. She was recently named the Director of Arsenal Operations in May of this year. In this role, Eileen manages the operations of the Arsenal and Zoo Garage in addition to supervising the Event, Library and PEP CSA staff. She also manages the Arsenal calendar which includes internal, public, and private events. Eileen serves as a liaison to community groups, partner organizations, and the general public.

On Friday, July 19, a lost purse was discovered in Central Park. However, this was not the average “lost and found” item as the purse contained upwards of $10,000 in cash, a birth certificate, credit cards, an identification card, a microfiche of medical records, and other assorted documents and personal items.

Eileen worked closely with PEP Officer Betty Ann Thomas, who was honored last month, to track down the owner of the purse. It was obvious that whoever lost the purse would be quite interested in its return. Central Park Zoo staff confirmed that the purse fit the description of a lost item that they had received earlier that day. The purse was returned to a shaken up, yet delighted, owner and the problem was resolved in a timely manner. The immediate actions and sound judgment of Eileen and Betty Ann are indicative of the efficiency and dependability of our staff.

For her incredible reliability, Eileen was nominated by Chief of Staff Dawnette Zuniga and Deputy Commissioner for Community Outreach Larry Scott Blackmon.
