MillionTreesNYC Awards 'TreeLC' Grants To Community Groups

Eighteen New York City community groups have been awarded grants by MillionTreesNYC to help organize and strengthen tree care efforts in their neighborhoods.

MillionTreesNYC presented grant awards to the winners today, provided an overview of the program, reviewed grant requirements and helped grantees access additional tree care and community organizing resources. This year’s grant winners represent a diverse range of New York City neighborhoods from all five boroughs. Each grantee will implement grass roots tree care projects from June through November, engaging friends, neighbors, youth and local businesses in caring for newly planted trees in their communities.

“On behalf of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, I am pleased to congratulate all of the winners of this year’s TreeLC grants,” said Parks Commissioner Veronica White. “Their shared commitment to making New York City greener and greater than ever before is something that we are glad to see taking root in communities across the city.”

Grant winners were selected by a panel of nine representatives from MillionTreesNYC and Central Forestry at Parks, Citizens Committee for NYC, Community Affairs Unit and NYC Service at the Mayor’s Office. More details about each project are posted at:

MillionTreesNYC, one of the 132 PlaNYC initiatives, is a public-private program with a goal to plant and care for one million new trees across the City’s five boroughs. The initiative’s TreeLC program engages New Yorkers in tree stewardship through a variety of resources including free Tree Care workshops, toolkits, Adopt-a-Tree database, and Train the Trainer workshops, to build a community-based network of tree stewards citywide. Empowered by knowledge of tree-care and community organizing skills, stewards can encourage their neighbors and community members to join together in caring for the long term health of our City’s newly planted trees.
