Poe Park Visitor Center Proudly Presents: Virtual Creative Arts Seniors: Upcycle to Art Showcase

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Creative Arts Seniors classes has gone virtual. The seniors had never taken art classes, especially virtually. They worked with the facilitator to use ordinary household items they had for the session, and were delighted to discover the beautiful things they were inspired to create, from a fun greeting card, to a wine bottle light, and even coasters to use at home.

Our Creative Arts Seniors classes will resume in late fall, and all skill levels are welcome. Come inspire your creative side and learn new art techniques.

About Poe Park Visitor Center

Poe Park Visitor Center is a community hub at Poe Park in the Bronx that offers art, literature, fitness, and community events. Due to the pandemic, the center is closed until further notice and the gallery has temporarily moved online.

Anna Howard

Anna Vasquez Howard was raised in the Bronx, and is the mother of two adult children and a wife, sister, aunt, great aunt, and friend. Anna is a retired NYC public school teacher and an avocational musician who enjoys playing the cello for over 40 years, and has a lot of fun taking art classes.

Momentous Coasters

These four coasters represent my life - the Puerto Rican flag, representing where my mother was born and where I try to frequent as much as possible; the hearts and four names of the members of my family;  a cello/bass part to Beethoven”s Symphony No. 3; a political sticker celebrating the Biden/Harris victory.

Greeting Card from Puerto Rico

This was one of the most challenging projects for me.  Trying to capture the essence of Puerto Rico and my favorite thing I used to love to do when I was a child and still do, kite flying.

Wine Bottle Lit up

My first time working with Gesso and dangling little lights. The shape of the bottle reminded me of my cello and I enjoy drinking wine.

Since my retirement several years ago,  I've been exposed to different art forms, materials and ideas. The pandemic started me on an exciting, artistic journey. With the continued guidance of inspiring instructors, the sky is the limit.
