Bronx River Wetlands: Their History and Future
The wetlands of the Bronx River watershed in the Bronx are best understood in the context of the history and development of the watershed. The Bronx has a legacy of extensive wetlands that greatly influenced the cultural and economic development of the region. Today, only a very small fraction of these wetlands remain and our urban infrastructure can make it difficult to understand all the wetlands services we have lost and at what cost. Studying the location, formation and function of historic wetlands through historic documents and maps can help us figure out what role these wetlands played in the watershed and what kinds of functions we might try to restore in todays' wetlands through wetland restoration. Understanding this landscape history can also help prioritize where to protect, restore and create wetlands in the watershed today.
