On November 14, 2018, the Greenbelt Recreation Center was closed for emergency HVAC repairs, and will remain closed until further notice. All classes have been relocated, please click on the class you are interested in to see where it has been relocated to. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage members to use their membership card at any of our other recreation centers during this time. In Staten Island, nearby recreation centers include Lyons Pool Recreation Center and Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to reopen the center.

Shape Up NYC: Tai Chi for Beginners

Learn the basics of Tai Chi.

Originally used to train soldiers, Tai Chi is now more commonly practiced as an internal art — a way of focusing the mind, while training the body — meditation thru movement.

 Tai Chi (perhaps surprisingly) provides an excellent full-body workout while also being relaxing, and can easily be maintained as a healthy life-long practice.  The countless benefits of Tai Chi include increased strength, conditioning, balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina, range of motion, bone density, joint lubrication, and mind/body connection; reducing blood pressure, pain, stiffness, and stress hormones — all of which extends to less injurous falls, more confidence, peace of mind throughout the day, and improved sleep at night.
