Southern Magnolia at Magnolia Tree Earth Center

Planted in about 1885, the southern magnolia at 677 Lafayette Avenue is the sole remaining designated landmark tree in New York City. It was designated at the behest of local activist Hattie Carthan, who also created an education center when demolition threatened the magnolia and three adjacent brownstones.
