Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team and staff at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to process beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) for the upcoming spring season!
Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome, we harvest bare-root plant material from GNPC production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Before planting, the stems must be cleaned and packaged. This process involves hand-stripping outer brown layers and excess roots, ensuring the viability of the green material and facilitating its replanting.
Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty, close-toed shoes, and warm layers. Facemasks are required! Please note this event will occur inside of a greenhouse with room for social distancing, or outside if weather allows.
