Community gardeners from across New York City have been gathering at the GrowTogether conference each spring since 1984 to celebrate the start of the garden season with a day of learning, networking, and reconnecting with friends. Join us for the third day of Part I of this year's NYC Parks GreenThumb 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will be hybrid this year, and spread out over the course of two weeks. Part I takes place virtually from Saturday, February 19th to Friday, February 25th. You can register for the full conference or individual sessions, all free of cost, on Eventbrite. Part 2 will be in community gardens around the city in April 2022 (registration coming soon).

Tuesday, February 22:

  • Bringing the Green: Crowdfunding for Community Gardens
    Noon – 1:00 p.m.
    Miriam R. Parson (ioby.org)

Do you have ideas for improving your community garden? Looking for funding to make it happen? This webinar with ioby will cover raising money and organizing neighbor support for community garden projects. From building out a new space to planting an herb garden, superstar ioby leaders and experienced fundraisers will share their tips, challenges, and triumphs to successful greening.

Miriam is ioby’s Match Program Director, administering matching grants to develop strategies that help communities get good done. She brings fifteen years of experience in creating and growing asset-based community programs, grounded in the belief that local neighbors know what is best for their own future.

ioby stands for “in our backyards,” but it also stands for taking care of each other, for civic participation, and for trusting neighbors to know what’s best for the neighborhood. ioby gives local leaders the ability to crowdfund the resources they need to build real, lasting change from the ground up. Their crowdfunding platform helps connect local leaders with support and funding from their communities to make neighborhoods more sustainable, healthier, greener, more livable, and more fun.

  • Compost Systems of All Shapes and Sizes
    1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Kyleen is on LES Ecology Center's Outreach and Education team that has worn many hats in the organization including staffing food scrap drop-off sites, operating the compost site, and conducting educational workshops to New Yorkers.

Jimmie Costello is an Outreach Coordinator at the LES Ecology Center. Jimmie originally interned with the Ecology Center in 2017 and has been excited about waste reduction ever since.

The LES Ecology Center (Ecology Center) has pioneered community-based models in urban sustainability since 1987. They provide unique e-waste and composting services, environmental stewardship opportunities, and educational programming to all New Yorkers who want to learn about environmental issues and take responsibility for creating solutions through action.
