Explore the world of textile-making with the Wyckoff House Museum!

Textile production is an ancient process and many different kinds of materials can be woven together to create fabric. Participants will learn about different fabrics and how to make a cardboard loom, and will be able to experiment with their own woven creations.

Materials List:

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Yarn or very thin fabric strips (like from an old t-shirt)
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Optional for Decoration: Beads

The Wyckoff House Museum is joining our sister sites Dyckman Farmhouse MuseumMorris-Jumel MansionOld Stone HouseHistoric Richmond Town, and Lewis Latimer House Museum for a series of virtual after school programs on Tuesdays this fall.

Each week an educator from each site will guide participants through a different interactive historical hands-on activity. Travel through NYC, and the past, without leaving your home!

Unless otherwise specified, sessions are intended for students ages 8-12. Younger children may require adult assistance. 

Session Schedule:
Tuesday, October 13 at 4:00 p.m.: Sew Your Own Pouch with Old Stone House – Learn how to make basic knots and stitches to sew your own pouch. 

Tuesday, October 20 at 4:00 p.m.: Suncatcher Design with Morris Jumel Mansion – Make multi-color suncatcher designs! 

Tuesday, October 27 at 4:00 p.m.: Paper Marbling with Lewis Latimer House Museum – Discover chemistry in art!

Tuesday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m.: Cardboard Loom Weaving with Wyckoff House Museum – Explore the world of textile-making while learning how to make your own woven creations.

Tuesday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m.: Traveling Kitchen with Dyckman Farmhouse Museum – Learn how to make delicious plant-based recipes while learning about Lenape, Mesoamerican, African, Dutch, and Dominican cultivated plants and foodways. 

Tuesday, November 24 at 4:00 p.m.: Make Your Own Board Game with Historic Richmond Town – Make your own strategy board game and test your mental might with historic riddles.
