Build your own lantern in the style of the Lunar New Year! The New York Winter Lantern Festival has come to Snug Harbor, and we want you to learn why lanterns play such an important role in Chinese celebrations. Working with basic materials, you will build a lantern from scratch to light up your holiday.

Participants in this workshop must be ages 6+.

This program is in celebration of the Breaking Ground: Twenty Years of the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden exhibition, which is on display at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art through December 29, 2019.

Purchase tickets online.

The Breaking Ground exhibition is made possible by the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Additional support is provided by Suzhou Tourism. Breaking Ground events and programs are funded in part with support from Council Member Joseph C. Borelli through the New York City Council’s Cultural Immigrant Initiative. Programming in the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden is supported by Bank of America.
