The garden is hosting an Autumn Equinox community potluck in celebration of International day of Peace, the harvest and the season of balance.  International Peace Day was established in 1981 by a U.N resolution, and provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.”

The September equinox is the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Autumn Equinox marks the middle of harvest, it is a time of equal day and equal night, and for the moment nature is in balance. It is a time to reap what you have sown, of giving thanks for the harvest and the bounty the Earth provides. As leaves turn yellow and fruits and vegetables ripen, most traditional celebrations of the autumnal equinox are associated with harvest. With all the talk about harvest, we are reminded to be grateful for the bounty and abundance in our own lives.

Many autumnal equinox celebrations include discussion among community members of what they have been able to bring to fruition in their own lives and everyone celebrates each other's victories together. This is a time for closure, finishing projects, and taking stock.

During the potluck there will be a Water Ceremony: Waters of adventure, waters of peace, waters of joy, waters of struggle, waters of hope. Those who wish to are asked to bring water from (or symbolizing) a special place they have visited during their recent physical or spiritual journeys. The water will be poured into a common bowl to symbolize our diversity and unity, and to celebrate our coming together in a sharing, loving community. After the water ceremony we will begin our potluck feast.

As the golden sun rises into this time of equal day and equal night, we invoke calmness and balance into our lives. In the spirit of this time of harvest, we will acknowledge and honor the fruits of what we have sewn thus far in the year. We will welcome the coming of darker days ahead where we can take the time to look inward as well as rest while more time is spent indoors. We look forward to seeing you in ceremony and celebration of Autumn in the tranquil garden.

Activities: We are going to create apple spice potpourri, play cornhole, honor each other with a Water Ceremony, and enjoy seasonal food and drink.

Please note: Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish. Email 158thstgarden@gmail.com or call the garden contact Timothy Brown at (410) 253-7067 for coordination of bringing items to the potluck. Those partaking who don't contribute to the potluck, please donate $3 towards the potluck.
