"I can't believe that it has taken me 46 years to complete this challenging exhibit. A project that I never dreamt could possibly fulfill such an exciting promise, let alone take as long as it has! It started out innocently enough in the winter of 1972, on an early Sunday morning drive in and around New York City's fabled waterfront, accompanied by my then 4-year-old son James, plus an old Ciroflex camera and a few rolls of black and white film. I remember how fascinated the little fellow was by the sights, smells, and texture of the area. Since this visit occurred on a Sunday, all was quiet on the waterfront. There were, anchored right next to him, tugboats, cargo ships, ocean liners and U.S. naval vessels to name just a few of the more impressive sights. And then, I must not forget to make mention of the spectacular view from the Staten Island Ferry, of the Twin Towers looming proudly in the distance. Since that time many things have changed in and around the harbor. However, the nostalgia of that visit still dwells within and has been captured by me in this series of stunning watercolors executed over a period of years, with diminutive James ("Jamie") as poignant model." - Michael Mendel
