Celebrate Pride with NYC Parks, New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and the Austin Film Festival!
Festival Friday returns with the Austin Film Festival and the short Suitable and the award-winning feature Pariah. Both films are thought-provoking coming-of-age journeys that empower and encourage an authentic identity.
Directed by Thembi Banks (DAYTIME DIVAS), Suitable follows Brandy (Kelli Jordan), a high school senior who doesn't dress or act like most of the girls in her school. When Brandy works up the nerve to ask her crush Jason (Derrick Anthony) to the prom, she has to decide if she'll wear what she feels comfortable in, or do what she's expected to: wear a dress.
Pariah tells the story of Alike (Adepero Oduye), a Brooklyn teenager juggling conflicting identities, risking friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression. Written and directed by Oscar-nominated Dee Rees (MUDBOUND), this beautiful film also stars Kim Wayans, Pernell Walker (THE DEUCE) and Charles Parnell (THE LAST SHIP).
Know Before You Go:
This film features explicit content and is rated R. You should come before 8:30 p.m. to get your spot for the movie. Please bring your own picnic blanket or chair. Food is OK, but no alcohol or smoking is permitted. All are welcome!
