SI OutLOUD: Black Cowboys and 'True Grit'

Saturday, February 24, 2018

2:00 p.m.3:30 p.m.

Staten Island OutLOUD will host a reading and presentation on Charles Portis' novel "True Grit". Explore how one survived in the wild with a short forest walk.

African-American cowhands comprised 25% of the workforce in the 19th century cattle industry, but many of us know little about their lives and work. Staten Island OutLOUD explores this facet of American history with readings and community dialogue about these men - and women! - who played an important role in the westward expansion in the years following the Civil War.

This event is free and family-friendly. There will be a book giveaway.

This program is sponsored by an encore grant from Staten Island Arts.
