The name J'Ouvert originates from the French jour ouvert, meaning day break or morning, and signals the start of Carnival.

Steel band music is the dominating sound of J'Ouvert as revelers take to the street wining and chipping their way in the early hours before the daytime West Indian Day Carnival.

This Year's Parade Route
The City of New York is partnering with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the NYPD for a safer J’Ouvert Parade. This year’s parade is permitted by NYPD and has an approved route (starts at Grand Army Plaza, goes south on Flatbush Avenue, east on Empire Boulevard, south on Nostrand Avenue, ending at Midwood Street.

Know Before You Go: Public Safety
To keep the event safe for everyone, there will be an increased NYPD presence and lighting along the parade route.  Parade goers will be screened for alcohol and weapons upon entering.
