The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.
Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.
