Urban Park Rangers specialize in interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and manmade, in our city’s long history. The Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse originated in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The Coast Guard relocated it to the west side of Manhattan in 1921. The story of the lighthouse in Fort Washington Park was popularized by the children's book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift with illustrations by Lynd Ward, published in 1942. Join the Urban Park Rangers as we open the doors and allow patrons to enjoy the views and sights on this mostly self-guided tour. No reservations needed, first come first served.
