<![CDATA[Arts, Culture & Fun: Screening of 'T-Rex' and Meet the Producer]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2016/06/03/arts-culture-fun-preview-screening-of-trex http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2016/06/03/arts-culture-fun-preview-screening-of-trex Date: June 3, 2016

Presented by WNET and Indie Lens Pop Up

Join us for a preview screening of the documentary T-Rex by Zack Canepari and Drea Cooper. Seventeen-year-old Claressa "T-Rex" Shields came from the streets of Flint to reach the Gold Medal podium in London in 2012, the first time women were allowed to box in the Olympics, but as we see in this coming-of-age story, life outside the ring may be an even tougher fight.

After the screening there will be a Q & A with the producer of 'T-Rex', Sue Jaye Johnson, and NYC Parks boxing teacher Colleen Flood.

Sue Jaye Johnson is a documentary artist working in radio, photography, film and interactive technologies. A two-time Peabody Award winner, Johnson's work frequently looks at the role of women in society. Recently, she spearheaded an unprecedented collaboration between The New York Times, NPR, and WNYC to tell the story of the first women to box in the Olympic games. The series included the radio diary of the then unknown teenage boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields. Claressa’s diary, which aired on NPR’s "All Things Considered" in 2012, led her to work on a feature documentary about Claressa's journey from Flint, Michigan to the top of the podium in London. T-Rex premiered at SXSW in 2015 and will be on PBS's Independent Lens in August 2016.

Colleen Flood teaches Power Punch at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center. Colleen started boxing in 2003 and started competing in 2005 on an amateur level. She competed in numerous competitions in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, such as Challenge of Champions, Battle at the Pier, and Fight Night NJ.
