Participants in this outdoor soap-making workshop will create their own soaps using a combination of ingredients, including essential oils and a variety of herbs, flowers, and miscellany from the Wyckoff House grounds. Traditional soap making recipes will be discussed and updated. No lye.

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks and the Michels family in honoring the late Council Member Stan Michels at the seventh annual memorial jazz concert performed by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble. The jazz is hot and the setting is cool, underneath the majestic elms on the promenade alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River.

Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the seventh anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.

Dr. John & the Nite Trippers

The legendary Dr. John is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans’ musical legacy, Dr. John is a true icon in American culture. His colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. Dr. John headed west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones’ “Exile On Main St.” During that time he launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Nite Tripper. His latest album “Locked Down”, released in 2012 with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2013 Dr. John was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tulane University alongside His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In 2014, Dr. John released Ske-Dat-De-Dat…The Spirit Of Satch, an album in tribute to another larger-than-life New Orleans legend: Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. After a half century of creating music for others and himself, Dr. John continues to write, arrange, produce and interpret with a passion that has yet to wane.

Amy Helm

Amy Helm’s deep musical roots were enriched by a lifetime of exposure to the finest expressions of American musical tradition. The daughter of music legend Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen, Helm wields a powerful voice that can both stir and soothe, whether she is singing traditional gospel, blues standards or her own heartfelt compositions. She is a gifted musician on both mandolin and drums, and was a founding member of the roots band Ollabelle, with whom she has recorded three CDs. While beginning her solo career, she continues to perform with both Levon Helm’s band and the Dirt Farmer Band as they carry on the eclectic roots music traditions from the Midnight Rambles.

The play is set during the latter days of the Roman Empire and tells the fictional story of Titus, a general in the Roman army, who is engaged in a cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. It is Shakespeare's bloodiest and most violent work and traditionally was one of his least respected plays. Although it was extremely popular in its day, by the later seventeenth century it had fallen out of favour. In the Victorian era, it was disapproved of primarily because of what was considered to be a distasteful use of graphic violence, but from around the middle of the twentieth century its reputation began to improve.

Once a free and open society, Vienna is bitterly divided between high morals and the greed of commerce. Disguised as a monk, the duke wanders the land, prying into the daily lives of his subjects. When his deputy sentences Claudio to death, the virtue and purity of his sister, Isabella, is the price she must pay to save her brother’s life. Measure for Measure is directed by artistic director Stephen Burdman.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Nação Zumbi
Twenty years ago, one of the most important groups in Brazil launched its first record, Da Lama ao Caos. The debut album by Chico Science & Nação Zumbi was a milestone for a group of friends, that by creating a scene, started a movement that ultimately destabilized the axis of musical production in Brazil. Their second album, Afrociberdelia, was launched in June 1996, but in less than a year, the band – and the world – would lose their front man Chico Science. Despite the huge blow, it wasn’t the end. Nação Zumbi reestablished itself and ever since has reinvented themselves year after year, and album after album. Having released six studio albums, Nação Zumbi brings manguebeat to life, and continues to be one of the most influential and respected Brazilian music bands today.

Nation Beat’s Carnival Caravan feat. Cha Wa
Carnival Caravan is a new collaborative touring concept featuring Brazilan-American group Nation Beat and New Orleans band Cha Wa. The goal? To incorporate Brazilian, New Orleans and related music, dance and art into a show that explores the cultural exchange between North and South America. Nation Beat’s Scott Kettner and Cha Wa’s Joe Gelini met in New Orleans on Mardi Gras Day in front of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux’s house awaiting the Golden Eagle Tribe. As Scott & Joe paraded with the Golden Eagles to the legendary corner of Second & Dryades they began a musical dialogue that became the inspiration for this musical collaboration. Its no surprise that even though they were playing instruments & rhythms from separate continents, the message was the same. It became clear there was a musical & cultural connection that was understood without words.

Vinil Pompéia
Do you remember when, back in the days, friends used to get together around record players to listen to new music releases and enjoy the deep sounds coming out of the vinyl? For most people this is the past, but not for the popular radio show, “Vinil Pompéia”. Featuring Chiquitito Corazon, Brig82 and Camilo Fyahman, the vinyl only radio show, aims to bring back the ritual of playing vinyl. “Vinil Pompéia” brings a diverse musical selection and precious tips about the record culture through the hosts and many special guests. The show proved to be so popular on the air, that it has come out of the virtual world and onto the dance floor. The “Vinil Pompéia” team travels around Brazil playing parties with the quality at the edge of the needle, as people say. Whether in the virtual or real world, “Vinil Pompéia” is becoming an oasis for vinyl lovers and everyone who appreciates good music.

The specialists, paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), are surprised to see the island park's main attraction are living, breathing dinosaurs, created with a mixture of fossilized DNA and genetic cross-breeding/cloning. However, when lead programmer Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) shuts down the park's power to sneak out with samples of the dinosaur embryos to sell to a corporate rival, the dinosaurs break free, and the survivors are forced to find a way to turn the power back on and make it out alive. The film also stars Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, and Samuel L. Jackson.
