Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

After traveling the globe, Cecilia returned to NY with a vision to bring together a diverse and extraordinary group of dancers that would create CMDC. The objective: to speak through the language of dance, about the ritualistic rhythms and magical experiences she encountered throughout her life, and as a child growing up in Panama. CMDC is a multicultural dance company, committed to celebrating diversity and unity by creating works that inspire collaborations with other artists and art forms. Possessing a distinct breath, CMDC’s repertoire incorporates elements that are reflective of Ms. Marta’s life and heritage, as well as her intimate acquaintance with many forms and styles of dance.

The New York Neo-Futurists are an ensemble of dynamic writer/director/performers who are best known for their critically acclaimed, energetic signature show of original short plays, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. Once called "The Snapchat of Theater", with its ever-changing "menu" of plays, TML is a race against the clock to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes in an order determined by the audience! All our plays are presented from a perspective of absolute honesty, do not ask the audience to "suspend their disbelief", and often include audience interactions. A non-illusory collage of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental, Too Much Light endeavors to tell dynamic stories while embracing chance, change, and chaos. Developed out of a format that has been a success in Chicago since 1988, the Neo-Futurists put down roots in NYC in the mid 90’s and have been growing strong ever since. After a grand re-birth in the city in 2004, NYNF has created over 3300 new plays for Too Much Light, as well as many longer form works, and continues to present award-winning, topical and vital work every weekend at the Kraine Theater and around the New York independent theater community. Sometimes true life really is stranger than fiction...

And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Saturday Open Volunteer Hours are for all ages, however volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Any volunteers under 18 must bring a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

All volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing (boots if it has rained recently, layers in cool weather, a hat and sunscreen in the summer are strongly recommended). Please also bring a water bottle.

We will work in most weather, including light rain. The following conditions will constitute cause for automatic cancellation of volunteer hours: heavy-driving rain, flooding, thunder and lightning storms, and temperatures upwards of 93 degrees. For weather-related cancellations, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter (@thebatterynyc) accounts.

Join a curatorial fellow for a tour of three current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Gregory Crewdson’s Fireflies series is being shown for the first time in its entirety; Crewdson’s photographs capture the fleeting light of these nocturnal creatures. In the Sunroom Project Space, Lauren Carly Shaw transforms the space into the setting of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1899), set in the late 19th century, when the original Glyndor House was constructed. Shaw chronicles the effect of confinement on a woman’s mental state. In the Sun Porch space, Reade Bryan’s sculptural installation investigates the way that iconic building materials, such as plywood and drywall supplies, are created and used. Here he evokes the effects of a flood or the mass of a cliff’s edge; the natural landscape appears to intrude on the interior, although the sculpture itself is made of domestic building material.

Devonté (Dev) Hynes is a producer, songwriter, and artist currently based in New York City. He has written and produced songs for a wide range of artists including Solange Knowles, the Chemical Brothers, Florence and the Machine and Sky Ferriera. Dev also writes music under the moniker of Blood Orange, and has released two albums, titled Coastal Grooves and Cupid Deluxe, on Domino Recording Co. Most recently, Dev composed the score for the Gia Coppola directed, and TriBeCa Film Festival featured film, Palo Alto; and in addition, was a speaker at the 2014 TED conference held in Vancouver.

Moses Sumney is a new LA-based singer & songwriter. Growing up, he was so shy that he would write songs avidly but hide them inside his mattress. At 20, he moved out of his parents' house to study creative writing at UCLA and finally gathered the courage to start performing music. After purchasing a beat-up guitar from a friend, he taught himself to play and accompany himself. He grew quickly as an artist at UCLA, soon performing weekly alongside the university's most esteemed musicians. Now graduated, he creates soul-infused folk tunes using guitar and layered arrangements built on loop pedals. Recently, SPIN Magazine described him as a "soul-folk warrior," Okayplayer called him "a name you should be hearing plenty of," and Pigeons & Planes called his voice a "breathing instrument that suggests a depth of feeling lyrics can only partially express."All of this, and he hasn't even officially released any music yet.

Sean Nicholas Savage is a Canadian Singer and Ballad Composer. In 2013 he released the record Other Life, his most emotionally thematic work and first in a year since he prolifically delivered three full length cassette albums; Flamingo, Won Ton Jaz and Trippple Midnight Karma in 2011. Savage touches always on a theory or profound observation and comes to at least a suggested point in his pop, drama compositions. Perhaps the pinnacle attraction of his work are these observations, learned wisdoms, the ongoing adventures shaping Savage himself, the Artist, the Performer, the Narrator. A pop ‘character’, but with severe realness comparable to Punk/Pop greats, such as Sinead O’Connor, Boy George or fellow Canadian poetics Majical Cloudz and Mac DeMarco. However, with the way music is consumed today, comparisons of contemporaries fail to do any contemporary justice. A broad range of genres and movements; Jazz, Punk, Country and Bossa that must all leave a stain on an artist that is himself an art admirer. Once a staple spectacle performance in Montreal’s all night illegal party scene, Savage has since taken to consistent touring and producing wherever he may be, in the past two years. In the spring of 2014 he is set to release Bermuda Waterfall, the much anticipated masterpiece follow up to his opus; Other Life.

Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Our experienced Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program. Participation in a mandatory safety review lead by a trained Ranger is required. All equipment is provided. All fishing programs are catch-and-release only and most programs are first-come, first serve. Families and children ages 8 and years and older are welcome to participate in fishing programs.

Zumba is dance fitness based on international rhythm. Classes involve shaking, sweating, smiling, and having loads of fun while burning off calories. We incorporate steps into our routines that work out every part of the body. The music consists of international rhythms, including a mix of Latino, urban, Brazilian, Bollywood, and Caribbean Beats, as well as current top 40s music. Every class feels like a party - you don't even know how to dance.
