Mama Akanke’ began her storytelling career while still a student at Howard University over 35 years ago. Challenged by her theatre professor to research and implement alternate forms of entertainment, she explored the world of storytelling and folklore through the lenses of Zora Neale Hurston and Katherine Dunham and became so inspired, developed and performed a one woman interactive participatory storytelling show for the D.C. Public Schools. Mama Akanke’ became a founding member of the Nubian Folklore Company; Sister Griots and Urban Griots. She has performed for audiences around the world for over 30 years as both a storyteller and actress to great acclaim. Well known for her imaginative interpretations of characters, her energy, her focus on literacy, magnetism and rapport with her audiences, Mama Akanke believes that every individual has the capacity to reach into their imaginations to understand other cultures and people in the world by actively engaging in their history and traditions. It is her hope that through her stories, songs and dances, the rich culture and beauty of people from the African Diaspora will be celebrated and passed on for generations to come. Mama Akanke’ has been featured as both a performer and director at venues throughout the world including: the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts; Howard University; Morgan State University; Syracuse University; Cornell University; The Apollo Theatre; The National Black Storytellers Festival; The National Black Theatre Festival; The University of Connecticut; The St. Gallen Theatre in Switzerland; The European Premier of the musicals “Raisin and The Sound of Soul” and a myriad of other venues. Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

“If people really want to know me, then listen to my music - my words especially,” says Byron Cage, one of the biggest names in urban praise and worship music. “If you want to know what my beliefs are, I always put that in my music.” The man who became known for his Top Ten worship anthems like “The Presence of the Lord” and “I Will Bless the Lord” is pouring his heart out in his new and ninth CD, “Memoirs of a Worshiper.” Cage’s evolved perspective on the power of praise dates back to his youth. Born in Grand Rapids, MI - the second of three children - he was friendly with the DeBarge R&B singing family and his uncle Bishop James Abney taught him choir conducting at an early age. After a path that has had its share of twists and turns, Cage feels he’s where God meant for him to be.

The New York Neo-Futurists are an ensemble of dynamic writer/director/performers who are best known for their critically acclaimed, energetic signature show of original short plays, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. Once called "The Snapchat of Theater", with its ever-changing "menu" of plays, TML is a race against the clock to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes in an order determined by the audience! All our plays are presented from a perspective of absolute honesty, do not ask the audience to "suspend their disbelief", and often include audience interactions. A non-illusory collage of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental, Too Much Light endeavors to tell dynamic stories while embracing chance, change, and chaos. Developed out of a format that has been a success in Chicago since 1988, the Neo-Futurists put down roots in NYC in the mid 90’s and have been growing strong ever since. After a grand re-birth in the city in 2004, NYNF has created over 3300 new plays for Too Much Light, as well as many longer form works, and continues to present award-winning, topical and vital work every weekend at the Kraine Theater and around the New York independent theater community. Sometimes true life really is stranger than fiction...

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.
