Flowers attract the attention of both human and animal visitors. Honeybees, bumblebees and butterflies are easily spotted in the garden but solitary bees, beetles and other native pollinators are often overlooked. Museum Educator Jay Holmes of the American Museum of Natural History leads this walk to observe our local pollinators at work. On the way we'll stop by our new "bee condo" in the Flower Garden to see who's taken up residence.

Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Free with admission to the grounds.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Chronixx & The Zincfence Redemption / Junior Reid / The Rice and Peas Crew in association with LargeUp and Federation Sound - Celebrating 15 years of Okayplayer & Federation Sound]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/26/summerstage-chronixx-the-zincfence-redemption-junior-reid-the-rice-and-peas-crew1 http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/26/summerstage-chronixx-the-zincfence-redemption-junior-reid-the-rice-and-peas-crew1 Date: July 26, 2014

Chronixx was the ‘stage’ name his friends bestowed on him, replacing the name ‘Little Chronicle’ he was given as the ‘junior’ to his father, the artist Chronicle. He was born October 10, 1992 and was named Jamar Rolando McNaughton. His father, a musician, recognized his talents and nurtured him in an environment in which he could grow into whatever area of music he chose. Always accompanying him to the studio, Jamar grew up around the likes of Burro Banton, Norris Man and the legendary Gregory Isaacs. With a big smile and an engaging personality, he confidently set out to make his mark in music, by writing his first song ‘Rice Grain’ by the age of five and going on to be choir director and worship leader at 11. At 14 years, he started producing and ‘building riddims’ for artistes such as Konshens and Munga Honorable and composing riddims such as the ‘Freezer Riddim’ for Icebox Records and voicing artistes such as, Popcaan for Maverick Records. Today, Chronixx credits his versatility and his professional stage presence to the early lessons he received from his father Chronicle, who always shared his own experiences and encouraged his son to go one step beyond with each performance. Chronixx is not disappointing his father, his family or his friends who know that the ‘sky is the limit’ for this young man who sees ‘music as his mission.’

A Kingston, Jamaican native, Delroy "Junior" Reid spent his youth in the city's Waterhouse district, notorious for being one of the most dangerous places in Jamaica. It was there in the politically turbulent late '70s, that he recorded his first-ever single "Speak the Truth" at the age 13, taking his first step towards becoming an internationally known reggae and dancehall artist. Reid joined the first ever Grammy Awards Winning Reggae group, Black Uhuru, as lead singer in 1986 where his work on the album Brutal earned him a Grammy-nomination. However, Junior's interest in producing material for himself, and desire to regain his domestic popularity, drove him into the solo arena and into his own studio where in 1989, "One Blood" saw him re-established at the forefront of the reggae scene. Today, Reid is a frequent collaborator and often sampled artist in today's hip-hop scene, including contributing his voice to Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, as well as working with the Wu-Tang Clan, Guru, The Game, M.I.M.S. and many more.

New York City’s Rice and Peas is a movement whose high energy party environment is home to a loyal following of creative influencers, artists, musicians, dancers and all around beautiful people. Since its inception in 2007, Rice and Peas has been bringing diverse groups of people together in a uniquely curated environment where dancehall and Caribbean culture meet downtown. A who’s who of reggae’s biggest stars like Wayne Wonder, Gyptian and Shaggy have called on Rice and Peas to do their exclusive release parties. Jamaica’s heavyweights Beenie Man, Mr. Vegas, Chronixx (and too many more to mention) have given impromptu performances— even multi-platinum artists like Sean Paul and Damian Marley party at Rice and Peas. Federation Sound’s own Max Glazer, LargeUp founder DJ Gravy, and the silent killer Orijahnal Vibez handle DJ duties while the ladies’ favorite East Flatbush badman, Micro Don, narrates the experience with raw energy, humorous ad-libs and infinite star power.

Hudson Warehouse presents The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

A farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways.

The mission of Hudson Warehouse is to present the classics in exciting productions inspired by our past and relevant to our present day. We want to educate the novice and enthrall the well-versed. We embrace the traditional and innovative, the classical and the modern classic. Through the dedication, passion and intelligence of all our theater artists, we bring these works to life. When our work elicits a true emotional response from an audience member, this experience reaffirms that theatre is a "ware" that is essential to daily life.

The Rock Steady Crew was established in 1977 by Bronx b-boys Jimmy D and Jimmy Lee. When they started this crew in the streets of the Bronx, they had no idea that someday it would take them all around the world. Only the best b-boys were down with Rock Steady. They had rivals in all five boroughs of New York and for every rival there were ten kids who wanted to be down with them. However, getting into the original crew was not easy. To get into Rock Steady you had to battle one of the other b-boys in the crew. It was a competition few people won.

In 1979 when the b-boying hype was beginning to die down, Jimmy D put Crazy Legs and Lenny Len down with Rock Steady just in time to add new life to the art form and take it to the next level. This was at a time when Crazy Legs moved to Manhattan. Going back to the Bronx every weekend became too difficult for Crazy Legs pockets. He then started to explore the Hip Hop scene in Manhattan more often. This meant losing touch with other members of Rock Steady. Crazy Legs would spend most of his time developing his craft in tenement building hallways and battling b-boys that he would come across and eventually hanging out with the ones that he felt had an original style. Born to Jamaican parents in South Wimbledon, London, on January 14, 1965, Slick Rick, born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, who has always been considered ahead of his time, is the most successful British-American rapper in music history. Brilliant word play, the effort-less ability to bring life to the stories he rhymed about, dead on pop-culture references and hilarious one-liners make him the wittiest rapper of all time.

He immigrated with his family to the Bronx in the mid 1970s and attended the La Guardia High School of Music & Art, where he became friends with future rapper Dana Dane. Rick began to gravitate towards the makeshift music of the streets. The two formed the Kangol Crew, and began performing in hip-hop battles around the city. At one 1984 battle in the Bronx, Rick met Doug E. Fresh, and began playing with his Get Fresh Crew. In the summer of 1985, the duo released their historic singles, “The Show and La Di Da Di.” Fresh’s beatbox and Rick’s smooth lyrical delivery turned rap music on its head and MC Ricky D. — as Rick was known then — leaped to a solo contract two years later, after being hounded by Russell Simmons and Lyor Cohen. Rick became the 3rd artist signed to Def Jam Records, the biggest label in hip-hop at the time. Before long, Rick would establish himself as one of the architects of hip-hop.

M.O.P., short for Mash Out Posse, is an American hip hop duo. The duo, composed of rappers Billy Danze and Lil' Fame, is known for their aggressive lyrical delivery style.[1][2] Although they maintain a strong underground following, they are mainly known for the song "Ante Up," released on 2000's Warriorz, and with which they have had mainstream success.[1][2] The group has frequently collaborated with DJ Premier. Fame sometimes produces under the moniker Fizzy Womack, and has produced a significant number of tracks on all M.O.P. releases since 1996's Firing Squad, as well as work for other artists including Big Noyd, Kool G Rap, Teflon and Wu-Tang Clan.

Consisting of Skoob and Krazy Drayzy, Das EFX has been around the music game for a long time. The duo gained critical and commercial fame with the release of their landmark debut album, Dead Serious, which highlighted their unusual rapping style which they nicknamed "sewage". Dead Serious went platinum and its lead single, "They Want EFX," reached the top ten on Billboard Magazine’s R&B chart, the top 40 on its Hot 100 Singles chart and #1 on its Hot Rap Tracks chart. Das EFX returned in 1998 with the album Generation EFX and followed up in 2003 with the album How We Do. The duo is currently working on a new album.

Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo, who has appeared in more than fifty films and was also seen on Nickelodeon series “The Brothers Garcia,” as well as on “ER” and “Miami Vice,” is also one of the nation’s most accomplished stage performers. “Ghetto Klown” is the next chapter in John Leguizamo’s popular personal and professional story. It is his fifth one-man play, his third on Broadway, and follows in the uninhibited tradition of his “Mambo Mouth,” “Spic-O-Rama,” “Freak,” and “Sexaholix … a Love Story.” In Leguizamo’s trademark style, the piece explodes with energy, heating up the stage with vivid accounts of the colorful characters that populate his life. He takes audiences from his adolescent memories in Queens to the early days of his acting career and on to the sets of major motion pictures. Leguizamo explains, “Ghetto Klown” is all the things I say to my therapist and my manager, but would never want the general public to know. It’s cheaper than a lawsuit and I get to take a bow at the end. It’s like Wiki leaks but with no international manhunt. Yet.”

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

City Parks Foundation is excited to announce the return of its popular PuppetMobile production, Little Red’s Hood. Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Moona Luna is the kindie group that The New York Daily News says is providing “the missing soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural kids.”

Songwriter and bandleader, Sandra Vasquez, found inspiration in American pop hits of the 50′s and 60′s, and staying true to her bilingual mission, crafted Spanish and English lyrics for each song. Having bilingual lyrics is just the icing on the cake— the tunes are finger snapping good and cater to wide audiences everywhere!
