Join a curatorial fellow for a tour of three current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Gregory Crewdson’s Fireflies series is being shown for the first time in its entirety; Crewdson’s photographs capture the fleeting light of these nocturnal creatures. In the Sunroom Project Space, Lauren Carly Shaw transforms the space into the setting of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1899), set in the late 19th century, when the original Glyndor House was constructed. Shaw chronicles the effect of confinement on a woman’s mental state. In the Sun Porch space, Reade Bryan’s sculptural installation investigates the way that iconic building materials, such as plywood and drywall supplies, are created and used. Here he evokes the effects of a flood or the mass of a cliff’s edge; the natural landscape appears to intrude on the interior, although the sculpture itself is made of domestic building material.

The legendary Dr. John is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans’ musical legacy, Dr. John is a true icon in American culture. His colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. Dr. John headed west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' “Exile On Main St.” During that time he launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Nite Tripper. His latest album "Locked Down", released in 2012 with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2013 Dr. John was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tulane University alongside His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Further, Dr. John is currently hard at work completing an album in tribute to Louis Armstrong which will be released in June of this year. After a half century of creating music for others and himself, Dr. John continues to write, arrange, produce and interpret with a passion that has yet to wane.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is the creation of frontwoman Alynda lee Segarra, a 26-year-old Bronx native who left home at an early age to travel the country before settling in New Orleans to play with a revolving cast of musicians. NPR's Ann Powers proclaimed that Hurray for the Riff Raff is, "Americana with a very young, fresh youthful sensibility. She's remaking traditions through her own voice. I'm just so struck by her voice. Literally. I love her singing voice...I can't stop listening to this woman's voice. I'm obsessed!" while Mojo Magazine raved that they “have immense potential and seductive power.” The band combines country and pop with honky-tonk, swamp pop, and blues for a wholly unique sound that’s unified by Segarra’s fresh vocals and beautifully crafted songs.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

Urban Theatre Movement's Handball, written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and directed by Brenda Banda delivers an explosive take on gentrification in New York City. The play tracks a park filled with characters as unique and diverse as the city itself. Tempers flare as new transplants work to make their mark while old residents struggle to maintain their way of life. Over the course of two hot, summer days we watch a once lively, buoyant park become extremely tense as each character struggles to find their way and survive while witnessing their neighborhood falling apart. Stories become intertwined, power is shifted and change reveals itself to be inevitable. Handball tells the story of modern-day urban America and the people struggling to find their way in it.

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks and the Michels family in celebrating the late Council Member Stan Michels at the sixth annual memorial jazz concert.

The jazz is hot and the setting is cool, underneath the majestic elms on the Stan Michels Promenade alongside the beautiful Heather Garden.

Stan Michels represented northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the sixth anniversary of his passing.

Gregory Porter’s Blue Note Records debut, the 2014 GRAMMY winning Liquid Spirit, arrived on the heels of two critically acclaimed, GRAMMY nominated indie label albums that quickly propelled Porter to the upper echelon of contemporary male jazz singers. Don Was, President of Blue Note, encouraged Porter to stay true to his artistic vision. “I firmly consider myself a jazz singer but I enjoy blues, southern soul, and gospel,” Porter says, “Those elements make their way inside my music. And I’ve always heard them in jazz.” Porter wields one of the most captivating baritone voices in music today. It emits enormous soul that conveys both the emotions and intellect of any given song without relying on vocal histrionics. Jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater praised Porter in JazzTimes, saying, “We haven’t had a male singer like him in a long time. He’s such a wonderful writer. He’s a story teller.”

Heralded by the Village Voice for having some of New York City’s “most electrifying young lions in jazz,” Revive Big Band has a finger on the pulse of today’s emerging progressive sound. Formed in 2010 by trumpeter, composer and arranger Igmar Thomas, this multi-generational ensemble knows no limits as they advance and celebrate the tradition of the big band. The band's repertoire features original compositions and inventive orchestrations of selected beats from legendary producers, notable hip-hop tracks and the original jazz records they sampled, all re-imagined and arranged into original works, in never seen before and sometimes never to be seen again live performances. The Revive Big Band’s recent shows include the 2014 WinterJazz Fest SummerStage Showcase featuring special guests Bilal and Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brooklyn Jazz with Oliver Lake and Sean Jones, special collaborations with Savion Glover and Pharoahe Monch and tributes to G.U.R.U and A Tribe Called Quest.

Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. National Dance Institute (NDI) was founded in 1976 by Jacques d’Amboise in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence. Each year, NDI transforms the lives of over 40,000 New York City public school children and their communities through weekly classes, short-term residencies, and public performances. Under the artistic direction of Ellen Weinstein and a staff of professional teaching artists, programs are offered to all children, transcending barriers of language, culture, and physical and cognitive challenges. Children learn to work together and develop personal standards of excellence, a pride of achievement, and a curiosity about the world that supports their success in school and in life. No child pays a penny for NDI’s core programs. Children who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment throughout their dance training are invited to join the organization’s most advanced troupe, the NDI Celebration Team, and perform year-round at venues that have included Symphony Space, Lincoln Center, Juilliard, City Center, the Kennedy Center, the White House and the Academy Awards. NDI dancers have toured internationally to Geneva, Switzerland; Venice, Italy; Tel Aviv, Israel; and Shanghai, China.
