Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Erik Benson’s paintings depict the landscape of everyday metropolitan life, created with thousands of shapes hand-cut from dried sheets of acrylic paint. Benson uses this painstaking compositional technique to capture the complexity of urban development, with its interplay of construction and creative destruction, density and emptiness. Familiar cityscapes emerge as more complex than they initially appear.

Originally I was interested in creating a painting vocabulary that depicted the plasticity and temporality of unexamined things such as playgrounds and construction sites,” says Benson. “These interests have been growing into ideas and concerns that deal with the urban landscape, such as how cities grow and shrink, and what these issues mean to the inhabitants.”

In these vivid new paintings, Benson considers the role and impact of playgrounds, trees and parks within evolving communities, often setting the saturated colors and bold shapes of play equipment and dynamic tree branch patterns against the muted backdrops of the surrounding buildings. Inspired by his neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, he creates works that are not precise representations, but rather archetypes, at once foreboding and optimistic.

Students from the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation present a photography exhibition entitled Changing Lenses at Poe Park Visitors Center. The exhibition marks the beginning of a new program that expands arts education for young scientists, and brings their work beyond the walls of the school into the community at large.

Throughout the Spring 2013 semester, nine students in grades 9 – 11 gathered for weekly after-school sessions with UASWC art instructor Jessica Sinclair and teaching artist Mustafa Önder. Using SLR cameras, nine students were introduced to the fundamentals of photography. Emphasis was placed on the communicative properties of image-making: composition, storytelling, and conceptualization. Photographic outings were undertaken throughout the local community, to the Bronx Zoo, and to Bryant Park in Manhattan. The group also took a field trip to the International Center of Photography, where they received a guided tour by a museum educator.

The project is sponsored by Joy of Givings Something, Inc. (JGS), a not-for-profit organization that promotes the art of photography.

Chubb Rock, often compared to a Hip-Hop Barry White, dropped out of pre-med at Brown University to pursue his musical career. Regarded as one of the East Coast’s most dexterous rappers, he first appeared on the national Rap scene with his self-titled debut, Chubb Rock. His 1991 release, The One, reached #13 on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart that year. Three singles from that release made it to #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Single chart that same year including, the classic song, “Treat Em Right,” “Just the Two of Us” and “Lost in the Storm.”

Best known for his platinum Hip-Hop classic “It Takes Two,” Rob Base along with childhood friend, DJ E-Z Rock rode their smash hit into R&B radio stations as well as dance clubs around the world and provided a touchstone for the style known as “Hip-House,” a mix of Hip-Hop rhymes infused with the musical stylings of dance music. Massive club and radio airplay helped the album go multi-platinum and earned Rob Base “Single of the Year” honors both in Spin Magazine and The Village Voice. His second single, “Get on the Dance Floor” continued Rob’s dance appeal, with his lyrical skills retaining his street credentials as a rapper. The smash single, “Joy and Pain” is a classic Hip-Hop song that still plays all over the world.

7:00 PM – All Levels Open Dance Master Class by: Jamal Jackson Dance Company
8:00 PM – Performances

Jamal Jackson Dance Company (JJDC) was founded with the purpose of fusing various traditional African dance styles with modern and Hip-Hop techniques while incorporating diverse musical styles in order to create a technique that is relevant to a diverse community of Americans. Through the company's signature style, which is characterized by looseness in the arms, hips and spine, fast footwork, and a constant bounce, the choreography weaves together to tell stories that redefine ideas of community and blur divisive lines, while still celebrating the beauty of individual cultures. Footprints From My Head's Rhythm is a direct representation of the choreographic themes at the core of JJDC with each piece exploring a different aspect of reconciling the need for people to maintain individuality while being accepted into a community.

JJDC will perform “Bask in The Shade,” a piece that explores the “benchmark” for certain levels of acceptance and inclusion into various social circles. This work, composed by Frank Malloy IV, takes an in-depth look at the influence of surroundings on the individual while also challenging external and internal physical boundaries.

Originally founded in 2004, the Brooklyn based Movement for the Urban Village is a contemporary dance company that relies on a community of women dancers of varied identity and life experience who join together to present dance works addressing social, political and spiritual themes. Under the direction of Shalewa Mackall, Movement for the Urban Village performs original contemporary dance rooted in the creative expression, a modality for healing and means for liberation on every level for all people. Since 2005, Movement for the Urban Village has presented six consecutive seasons of original dance in New York City.

Choreographed and directed by Shalewa Mackall, Calling Names is an original dance and theatre work that incorporates live music to explore issues of identity, lineage and personal transformation as the audience is taken on a journey from personhood to spirit hood.

Master Class: Company members of Jamal Jackson Dance Company will teach energetic, full-body movement that flows fluidly between West African, Hip-Hop and Modern dance techniques.

Puzzlemaster Will Shortz and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! host Peter Sagal walk into a bar... No, it's not the start of a joke. It's the essence of NPR's and WNYC's Ask Me Another, a rambunctious show that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music. Host Ophira Eisenberg invites guests and listeners alike to stretch their noggins, tickle their funny bones, and enjoy witty banter and guitar riffs from the Ask Me Another one-man house band, Jonathan Coulton.

Join Eisenberg as she puts questions to a rotating band of puzzle gurus, contestants and special VIP’s (that’s Very Important Puzzlers), who then take a turn in the puzzle hot seat facing trivia games written especially for him or her. What you'll hear resembles the casual intimacy of game night at a friend's house: one where scores are forgotten in favor of hilarious gaffes.

SummerStage attendees can play along as the on stage contestants take a turn in the puzzle hot seat at this special live recording of the famed variety show. Stay tuned for the announcement of Ask Me Another's VIPs!

Hailing from St. Albans, and originating in 1961, The Zombies are a legendary English Rock band. Led by Rod Argent on piano and Colin Blunstone on vocals, the band scored US hits in the mid and late 1960s with “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season.” Their 1968 album, Odessey and Oracle is ranked 80th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time." In 2011, The Zombies released their fifth studio album, Breathe Out, Breathe In. This latest album enhances the legacy of this monumental rock group with The Independent declaring, “…an authentic 1960s prog-pop tone is sustained through Argent's surging organ and sly piano, combined with the layered harmonies of Blunstone, whose voice seems impressively unravaged by time.”

Coming together in 2009, Django Django is a British group that met at art school in Scotland and has its roots planted in London, England. This adventurous Rock group melds indescribable electronic flourishes to live instrumentation. Consisting of four members, Django Django’s debut self-titled album, has been voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as 26th in its “50 Best Albums of 2012” list. Each track contains its own nation of harmonies, rhythms and textures. Django Django’s story looks set to be a long and compelling one. By banging together their thirst for adventure and their exacting high standards, they’ve produced an album that seems to have everything, but on which everything never seems too much.

Just one listen to Adam Green & Binki Shapiro is enough to become enchanted. With deceptively pretty arrangements that echo the emotions of late-sixties Folk-Pop and an easygoing rapport between singers, this duet's collaboration may seem like the perfect accompaniment to a sunny summer’s day, Southern-California style. But it works even better as a comforting soundtrack at the end of a dark, lonely night in the big city. The atmosphere the pair conjures up with strummed guitars and discreet layers of synths indeed suggests romantic possibility, but the lyrics are more sweetly melancholic, gently but candidly addressing betrayal, incipient heartbreak, and conjugal discord. It’s an approach that makes for compelling repeated listening, as the intimate dramas reveal themselves, and it’s one that surprised even Green and Shapiro as their self-titled debut album went on sale in January 2013.

7:00 PM – All Levels Open Dance Master Class by: Calvin Wiley
8:00 PM – Performance

“Speak” is a multi-media concert and dance piece inspired by the songs of artist Marla Mase's acclaimed album, Speak Deluxe. Combining live music, spoken word, dance and visual imagery, choreographer Adrienne Hurd melds contemporary and modern dance forms in this one of a kind show. Through Hurd's powerful portrayal of a woman's confinement, sexuality, body image, trauma, oppression and freedom, she celebrates the raw reality of the human condition as expressed through the eyes, bodies, and voices of women. Through the expressive movements of a troupe of seven dancers, each of whom has a distinct voice and tale in the mini-stories, the dancers will explore the archetypes that make up the idea of what it means to be a modern woman.

The music, co-written by Marla Mase and Tomás Doncker is an integral part of “Speak” and features elements of Rock-n-Roll with World Beat, Punk, Funk, Electronica, Reggae and Soul and will be performed live at each performance with both Mase and The Tomás Doncker Band.

Marla Mase is a writer/performer/producer/singer/songwriter from New York City. Her songs, a mix of World Beat, Spoken Word, Funk, R&B, Punk, Soul, and Classic Rock-n-Roll are infused with Global Soul, the signature sound of Tomás Doncker, her guitarist, co-writer and producer.

Tomás Doncker, a musician that has performed at SummerStage in 2012 with the production, Power of Trinity, has expanded his musical vision of “Global Soul” drawing influences from numerous musical sources, including East/West Africa and the Caribbean and fused them into something all his own.

Adrienne Hurd has performed in several Broadway shows and has also choreographed dance pieces for some of the world’s largest programs, such as The Ailey School Junior Division, Professional Performing Arts School, The United Arts Counsel, American Ballet Theatre summer intensives and Nomad Contemporary Ballet Company.

James Jankiewicz has been a filmmaker for over 20 years, having worked in all aspects of production and post-production. He is the founder of VideoBiopics, a full service production company dedicated to telling stories, and his background includes work on all kinds of films including features, corporate, sports, and the arts.

Sara Berg has been a director, producer, dramaturge and actor in theatre, radio, television and cabaret. She was Co-Artistic Director for the Titans Theatre Ensemble, and directed A Brief Night Out for Marla Mase and Tomás Doncker in 2012.
