Free, space is limited please register here.

Families work together to make rotating box kites. We'll use dowels and 3D-printed parts to attach pieces together to make the basic box kite forms. Then, we will glue recycled plastic and fabric, and paint them to make your own custom kites!

Class goals: Learn about flight dynamics and how to build a box kite. Also, learn about Freshkills Park and how it is being transformed from a landfill to NYC's largest park.

Prerequisites: Students must be at least 6 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults do not have to be accompanied by children. No experience necessary.

Materials: All materials are supplied.

About Freshkills Park: At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. In addition to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities, including many uncommon in the city, the park’s design, ecological restoration, and cultural and educational programming will emphasize environmental sustainability and a renewed public concern for our human impact on the earth.

NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet.
