<![CDATA[Wave Hill Meet The Artists: Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao]]> Date: July 28, 2013

Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao’s collaborative, interdisciplinary practice explores the role of play in everyday life. Their work is often inspired by common daily rituals, such as eating breakfast, watering house plants or celebrating holidays. In the process, quotidian materials become important elements of inspiration.

For their project in the Sun Porch, Frezza and Chiao explore the tension between nature and artifice embedded in the concept of a “controlled wild,” transforming the space into a competitive natural environment created largely through artificial means. Responding to the Sun Porch’s alternating role of winter conservatory and summer art space, Frezza and Chiao have built a small pyramidal greenhouse in the center of the Sun Porch, populated by a lush assortment of handmade, paper plants dispersed among living plants curated from local nurseries. Viewers are invited to enter the greenhouse sculpture and inspect the plants up-close while immersed in a fantastical landscape of fiction and reality.

<![CDATA[Rock Steady Crew 36th Anniversary Concert Featuring Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth / Brand Nubian / Special Ed / Craig G / Q-Unique / Homeboy Sandman / Torae / Rasheed Chappell]]> Date: July 28, 2013

The Rock Steady Crew celebrates its 36th anniversary of being a true Hip-Hop brand ambassador by bringing its annual free concert to SummerStage in Central Park for the first time. In typical fashion, RSC will present the who's who of Hip-Hop past and present by showcasing legendary MCs and DJs alongside some of the best rising talent. The beloved annual gathering always attracts fans from around the world, to be part of one of New York’s longest running annual celebrations of Hip-Hop culture.

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, the critically acclaimed Hip-Hop duo emerged onto the music scene in 1991 with their debut EP, All Souled Out which was followed by the release of the classic LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother. Their signature hit, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” has been recognized as one of the most memorable Hip-Hop recordings of all time.

The Five Percent Nation of Islam was a popular inspiration for numerous thinking-man’s rap groups during the early 1990’s, and Brand Nubian was arguably the finest of the more militant crop. The hoopla surrounding their aggressive Afrocentrism sometimes overshadowed the playful and positive sides of their work, as well as the undeniable virtuosity of lead MC Grand Puba's rhymes -- all showcased to best effect on their highly acclaimed debut, One for All.

Special Ed “got it made” as a rising star in hip-hop when he was just 16. His debut album, Youngest in Charge was on the Billboard charts for 38 weeks and featured, “I’m the Magnificent” and “I Got it Made,” which achieved “classic” status in the Hip-Hop community.

Craig G began with Marley Marl and the Juice Crew in 1985. After signing with Atlantic Records, he released two albums in 1989 and 1991. Allmusic has called The Symphony, “a landmark moment in the evolution of hardcore rap.”

Q-Unique is a Puerto Rican rapper best known for his work done with The Arsonists. Their first album, As the World Burns was released in 1999 reached #78 on Billboard’s Top R&B and Hip-Hop Albums. In 2013 there is much suspense for their release of Lost in the Fire, which will be their first album in over 10 years.

Homeboy Sandman jumped in the game in 2006, and dropped his first EP Nourishment soon after in 2007. Later that year, he released a full-length album which led him into the limelight being acclaimed by underground radio stations, Source Magazine, and

Torae was first featured by Hip Hop DX in 2007 in their DXNext Hip-Hop underground series. Since then, Torae has worked with a number of artists and producers, such as Wale and Talib Kweli.

<![CDATA[Southern Queens GospelFest: Byron Cage / Deon Kipping / Latice Crawford / Michael Pugh / Lenny Smith / The Greater Allen Cathedral Choir]]> Date: July 28, 2013

Join more than 2,000 attendees at Baisley Pond Park for performances by top gospel singers, including Byron Cage, Latice Crawford, Michael Pugh, and the Allen AME Choir.

If there’s a songsmith who understands heartache and pain, it’s Byron Cage, a man who has repeatedly touched gospel music heaven, only to be reminded time and again that the road to life’s mountaintops is often spent in the valley of the shadow. Cage knows the struggle well and his fourth CD, Faithful to Believe is a joyous testament of praise after a season of trials — a soul-searching period where he took stock of his ministry, his music, and his personal relationships.

Deon Kipping is an established, prolific, and inspirational songwriter/producer, whose talents have spawned him to Gold and Platinum success. His works to date include the smash single “Incredible God” and “Praise Him In Advance.” His latest work entitled. I Just Want to Hear You is a collection that will cause you to relate to his life’s challenges, plateaus, and triumphs.

Latice Crawford got her start singing in her cousin's choir, The New York landscape, where she often times gathered inspiration, allowed her to explore her creative capacities - writing, designing fashion and perfecting her signature sound. Judges of BET's hit series, Sunday Best felt the same exact way. The spirited siren wowed the judges week after week with her gifts, successfully securing the number three spot in the series' final round during its second season run.

Michael Pugh is best know from his participation as a contestant on the fourth season of BET's Sunday Best gospel singing competition. Since then he has workd with the famed Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral on their hit single "Greater."

In 1974, Lenny Smith penned “Our God Reigns”. Shortly after, it was being sung in thousands of churches across the globe. It’s now 2013, and Smith has released Who Was And Is And Is To Come. A crowning achievement in a career spanning almost six decades and encompassing hundreds of songs, the record is a gospel album of simple but certain declarations about the primacy of Maker over everything else.

The Greater Allen Cathedral of New York is an African Methodist Episcopal church located in Jamaica, Queens, New York. The congregation currently has over 23,000 members, making it one of the largest churches in the United States. The choir has released Reverend Floyd Flake Presents the Worship Experience, which offers an outstanding collection of songs recorded by The Greater Allen Cathedral. The album’s first single is “Greater” featuring Michael Pugh.

NYC Parks hosts this free festival to increase our programming in Southern Queens, and treat parkgoers to an afternoon of soulful sounds. This event is sponsored by NYC Parks, the City Parks Foundation, Council Member Ruben Wills, Globestar Media, Queens College and WLIB. Kid-friendly activities will also be available, including arts & crafts, face painting, and an inflatable bounce house.
