The Fitness Guru (aka Michael Feigin) is back in the park for Pilates Mat classes overlooking the New York Harbor. Learn to properly activate the muscles of your abdomen and back to create an incredible amount of stability in your torso. Pilates is designed to restore the natural curvature of the spine while rebalancing the muscles around the joints.

A few notes:

  • Registration begins at 6:30 pm each evening.
  • Remember to bring a mat if you have one (a limited number of mats are available first come first served - with valid ID).
  • Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All participants must sign a waiver each night before participating.

July 9: Baroque in the Park: The Judgment of Paris, a Baroque opera by John Eccles, conducted from the harpsichord by Kenneth Cooper with five vocal soloists and chamber orchestra, and an instrumental work by Johann Sebastian Bach.

July 16: A Musical Adventure: Featuring Margaret Leng Tan a foremost performer of new piano music and the world's first toy piano virtuoso (“The queen of the toy piano” - The New York Times) performing the US premiere of the chamber version of a toy piano concerto written for her by British composer Michael Wookey. Also works by John Cage, Richard Strauss and Adolphe Blanc.

July 23: Mostly VW--- Verdi and Wagner: instrumental and vocal transcriptions for chamber ensemble: orchestral interludes and arias by Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi in celebration of their 200th birthdays.

July 30: Music of East Africa featuring Nepo Soteri, guitarist, singer and composer who survived the Rwandan civil war. His music is directly influenced by the raw rhythms and stylized sounds unique to such African countries as Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia, from which spring the roots of American jazz. Preceding the concert in the afternoon, will be a children’s interactive rhythm workshop with African musicians.

Informed by the expansive vision of pioneering choreographer Martha Graham, the Martha Graham Dance Company brings to life a timeless and uniquely American style of dance that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences. As one of the most celebrated modern dance companies in America, Graham and her dancers have expanded contemporary dance’s vocabulary of movement and forever altered the scope of the art form. The Martha Graham Dance Company has been a leader in the development of contemporary dance, and is recognized for its model audience engagement activities. The company has received international acclaim from audiences in over 50 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, and has performed at most of the major venues of the world. In addition, the Company has produced several award-winning films broadcast on PBS.

The Company will be performing Acts of Light, Chronicle and Lamentation Variations by Bulareyaung Pagarlava, Larry Keigwin, and Richard Move.

Dancin’ Downtown at The Joyce is a collaboration between Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) and The Joyce Theatre. Dance studios are adjudicated by top names in the dance world with the award winner performing at SummerStage.

Their journey takes them through Europe where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.
