The Poseidon's Parade is a family-friendly art parade that encourages creativity and artistic expression. It is the work of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, the locally-run float that has represented the peninsula at the annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. After winning best motorized float two years in a row – and having a blast for many, many other years – they decided, with support from community board 14 and the Parks Department, to bring a parade across the bay.

Participants can march solo, with a group, on a float or on a bike. Prizes will be awarded in different categories highlighting the most creative, seaside and ocean themed costumes.

Online registration is encouraged, and costs $5 for individual marchers, and $10 per float.

After the parade, kids and their families can celebrate in the "Under the Sea Lounge" with a DJ, face painting, hula hooping, the Parks Department mobile playground, crafts and other activities.

The parade will step off at Beach 106th Street in Rockaway Beach, on the newly-rebuilt boardwalk, ending at Beach 95th Street Plaza.

Since 2009, Town Square has been promoting environmental consciousness at the local level through our Greencycle Swaps. One man’s trash isanother man’s treasure! Drop off your cleaned, gently-used and working items, and browse the selection and take as many “riches” as you can carry for a $5 donation.

Don’t forget to bring a bag (or cart) to tote them all! All remaining items are donated to local charities and churches. Town Square is a qualified 501(c)(3) not-for-profit institution. Your donation will be tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opened its 39th annual tour with "Teach It Right, or, Right to Teach," a rip-roaring musical which tackles the challenges and struggles facing public education in NYC.

Free performances will tour city streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs through September 20. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks.

The production tells the story of a NYC middle school student who is about to enter high school. His school often has no heat in winter, is broiling hot in summer, has no art classes, and a charter school is about to grab half its building.

The student, Michael, deprived of an afterschool program, tries for a part-time job at McDonald's, where he is caught up in a melee when someone bucks the line. Knocked unconscious, he is rescued by an undocumented worker, but dreams an Odyssey through the beggar/transient underground, where the king of the panhandlers is organizing an underground to fight the Real Estate Cartel, headed by B.M. Peabody. The Cartel wants to purge the City of anyone living at or near the poverty line in order to obtain a contract for the 2022 Olympics. Michael is sent to spy on the cartel, but is captured and imprisoned in the Glitter Clutter Club in the sub-basement of Trump Towers.

Meanwhile, Michael's teacher, R.C. Brown, is searching for him. He has suffered, like Michael, at the middle school, enduring budget cuts, teaching to the test, and spending his own money for supplies. He, too, is kidnapped by the Cartel to keep him from finding Michael but is rescued by the daughter of the King of Panhandlers. Michael and R.C. Brown, both now entering high school as student and teacher, are reunited to face the battles of NYC schools, where disputes over privatization reflect the challenges and struggles of the world outside. They will be leaders in the fight to teach it right and for the right to teach.

The Wiz re-tells the story of The Wizard of Oz, but is a classic in its own right. The movie stars a young, African-American kindergarten teacher named Dorothy who has "never been below 125th Street". After chasing her dog in a snowstorm, she finds herself in Oz, a place that looks just like 1970's NYC. Imagine that! Follow her as she struggles to find her way back home. Rated G.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Join us for a journey back in time to the elite ‘Bond Street area’, home to Astors, Vanderbilts, Delanos — and the Tredwells, who lived in the Merchant’s House. You’ll walk the footsteps of these wealthy mercantile families whose elegant Federal mansions once lined the tranquil cobblestone streets. Our tour passes by iconic landmarks such as the imposing Colonnade Row, the Public Theater, and The Cooper Union, where Lincoln gave his ‘right makes might’ speech. On the bustling Astor Place, imagine the drama of events that led to the Opera House riot of 1849, among the bloodiest in American history. And visit the site of the scandalous 1857 Bond Street murder of Harvey Burdell, one of the City’s still unsolved crimes.

Tours are one hour and begin promptly. Limited to 20 people (on a first-come, first-served basis). Tours are canceled in the case of heavy rain, snow, or extreme heat and cold advisories.

“If you can hear my voice, you can break…”. Those words, spoken by beloved race announcer Kurt Steiner (1921−1993) encouraged countless race finishers to run their hearts out. Steiner was a founding member of NYRR and a competitive runner and race walker.

Born in Austria, Steiner was a member of the French Foreign Legion who escaped from enemy captors. Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford was one of his soldiers in the U.S. Army. Steiner worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help stage the first five-borough New York City Marathon and assisted NYRR with race scoring, race applications, and media activities.

Please note: NYRR cross country races are not 9+1 qualifiers.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the smallest of the park's three woodland landscapes. Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.
