12x12 is a model display of a sustainably-built, off-grid tiny house. The house is a simple modular space with a rainwater-collecting butterfly roof, and wall panels inscribed with text and information from William Powers’ book “12x12” which details his experience living in the structure. These panels will vary and be movable, allowing the structure to grow and evolve as various artists and invited groups take up short-term residence.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

E-waste contains many toxic substances that are hazardous to human health and to the environment, and although it only makes up 1% of the volume in a landfill, it contributes 70% of the toxins. Recycling events such as this one keep these materials out of the waste stream and allow them to be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. Alice Austen’s groundbreaking portfolio “Street Types of New York” from 1894, marks her as one of the earliest female street photographers who captured the changing face of the city’s working class just before the turn of the century. Today a new generation of photographers continues her legacy of documenting the ever-changing city. This exhibition includes work by: Alice Austen, Chris Arnade, Alice Attie, Dmitry Gudkov, Peter Funch, Andy Jones, Wayne Lawrence, Erica McDonald, Greg Miller, Christina Paige, Susanna Ray, Richard Renaldi, Ruddy Roye, Geordie Wood, and AnRong Xu.
The New Street Types draws connections from early street portraiture like that of Alice Austen (1866-1952) to contemporary image-makers. The artists selected for the exhibition work in a similar style to Austen, often employing large format photography to create portraits of New York City’s diverse communities and subcultures – including the outer fringes of the expanding city like the Rockaways and Orchard Beach. Some of the artists conceptualize themes in portrait typologies and use social media to communicate online, while artists like Peter Funch take the traditional street portrait a step further, creating digital tableaus to capture life on the streets and see it anew. Photographer Ruddy Roye utilizes Instagram to create his images - sharing them in a spontaneous and wide-reaching way Austen could have never imagined.
In addition to the contemporary images, Alice Austen’s rare and fascinating “Street Types” portfolio, produced c.1896 by the Albertype Company, will be on display. The show examines Austen’s intentions behind the portfolio of portraits and leaves the viewer to ponder her reasoning for the project – a question that was left unanswered at the time of her death in 1952.
The Alice Austen House is handicapp accessible with a wheelchair ramp in the rear of the house.

Oliver Mtukudzi and The Black Spirits, a revolutionary music group originating in Zimbabwe, have been performing since 1979. The Black Spirits members have changed over the years, consisting of over 50 members throughout its time, with Oliver Mtukudzi, both musician and public figure, at the forefront throughout the group's history. Mtukudzi’s organic, savvy mix of traditional ways, pan-African influences, and cosmopolitan Pop forms became widely known as Tuku Music. Mtukudzi’s deep and courageous voice solidifies the band, while most of their writing and performances act as a declaration against hatred and violence. Featuring strong socio-political themes driven by a desire to see the world conquer hate, fear and greed, the band's most popular tracks promote tolerance and non-violence including “Tozeza Baba” and “Ngoromera.”

Born in the Ivory Coast, but raised in Mali, Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) has created music that has become an inspiration to people around the world. Now based in Paris, and still only 30, Fatou has led a life covering the whole gamut of the contemporary African experience: fighting parental opposition to her artistic ambitions and the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout Africa, and winning success as an actress in film and theatre before finding her feet in the medium she was always destined to make her own: music. She completed an album's worth of songs, composing and arranging all the titles, as well as playing guitar, percussion, bass and singing lead and harmony vocals. In 2011, Fatou released her self-titled debut album, which was deemed by the British based The Sunday Times as the #1 world music album of 2011.

London-based Ethiopian trio, Krar Collective, have developed a distinctive style based on the reworking of traditional songs from their native land. Dubbed ‘The Ethiopian White Stripes” for their stripped-down sound, Krar Collective provide their audiences with a colorful blend of dynamic roots music from different regions and ethnic traditions, but with a contemporary edge, plugged-in and funked-up. In September of 2012, The Guardian described Krar Collective as “one of the most rousing, reliable new African bands of the year.” Their first album, Ethiopia Super Krar¸ featuring their 6-stringed krar lyre, kebero drums and the powerful vocals of singer Genet Assefa, serves up some mind-blowing Ethiopian grooves.

DJ Sirak, born in Addis Ababa, adds depth to the conversation by making Afro-beat a prominent influence in his style. As the co-founder of Africology, an entertainment venture that focuses on educating the world on music of African descent, his endeavors as a DJ help to break down the cultural barriers through the medium of music. Sirak matches the beats of artists like the Notorious B.I.G and dead prez to the up-tempo drums and breaks from his homeland. The fusion is his way of bridging the culture gap between the communities of the Americas and Africa. His sets not only spice up the dance floor, but also add heat to the debate over the origin of rhythm driven Hip-Hop beats.

At the intersection of music and technology, Derrick “D-Nice” Jones has built a career as a respected musician, photographer, and web-developer. D-Nice grew up in the Bronx, Hip-Hop's birthplace, and emerged as a rapper and producer in the late 1980s. DJ Scott La Rock of Boogie Down Productions mentored D-Nice as a teenager and offered him a place to develop his talent alongside rap legend, KRS-One. He began to expand into production, producing The Stop The Violence Movement’s number 1 single “Self Destruction,” and later working with Queen Latifah and Kid Rock on their early albums. Among his many musical projects he also contributed to the soundtrack for the film, “I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.” DJ D-Nice has performed at events with/alongside Stevie Wonder, Diplo, , Santigold, Big Sean, Drake, Trey Songz, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Will Smith, Billy Joel, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Prince, Queen Latifah, Russell Simmons, Wiz Khalifa and many more.

Twenty-five years ago Keenan Ivory Wayans unleashed I'm Gonna Got You Sucka on the world and a comedic classic was born in this parody of blaxploitation movies, wherein a black hero wannabe reunites former black heroes from the 70s, to help him get revenge on Mr. Big. Written, directed and starring Keenen Ivory Wayans, I'm Gonna Got You Sucka features noteworthy Black actors from the blaxploitation era including Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, and Isaac Hayes. Chris Rock, Kadeem Hardison, Ja'net Dubois, John Witherspoon, Damon Wayans and Clarence Williams III, are also featured. Join us for a fun-filled tribute to a wayward classic.

Brooklyn-based Renegade Performance Group presents this site-specific performance in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of three Civil War-era events that left significant impacts on the fabric of American society.

Arteries of a Nation is a multi-disciplinary performance re-examining the battle of Gettysburg, the New York City Draft Riots, and the 54th Massachusetts Colored Regiments attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. This collaborative work puts a critical lens on these three events - imagining that perhaps these specific instances - though horrific - represented the most honest examples of the realities in the United States. A country made to be a constant battleground of conflicting ideas, a country where violence itself is an act of transformation, and a country where compromises are sacrificed in the face of those seeking equality.

The summer classes will be an introduction to the foundational elements of Yang family Taijiquan, including the first section of the long form. In addition to this, we will be studying the eight Zhan Zhuang Qigong postures of Yiquan to complement our understanding of correct body alignment and connectedness of movement in Taijiquan.

Instructor Joh Morton has been studying Chinese Martial Arts for over seven years and has competed nationally and internationally in Kung Fu and Tai Chi. He learned Yang family Taijiquan from Master Dug Corpolongo, and has continued to study with him for over six years, receiving certification to teach the long form in 2011. In addition to Taijiquan, he has studied Yiquan, Shuai Jiao, Northern Longfist Kung Fu, Southern White Crane, and Xingyiquan. His focus is on understanding and incorporating traditional theories of Qigong and Chinese martial theory with modern principles of body mechanics and physics.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Since the release of their GRAMMY-nominated 2010 debut album, Backatown, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have grown creatively while winning hordes of new fans performing nonstop on five continents. Their latest album, For True, offers substantive proof of their explosive growth, further refining the signature sound Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has dubbed “Supafunkrock.” The band stirs together old-school Jazz, Funk and Soul, laced with hard-rock power chords and Hip-Hop beats, and they’ve added some tangy new ingredients on For True as they keep pushing the envelope, exploring new musical territory. “Trombone Shorty is so ready for his close-up,” The New York Times wrote, describing the young virtuoso as “a native prodigy destined for breakout success.”

Soulive has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s right there in their name. Since forming in 1999, the trio of guitarist Eric Krasno, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans has carried the torch for the soul-jazz organ trio. In their 13 years together, Soulive has followed the muse in the direction of Hip-Hop, R&B, Blues and Rock, collaborating with the likes of Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews, and Talib Kweli and so many others, even going so far as to record a full album of covers by The Beatles. Their latest, a four-track EP entitled, SPARK, was recorded over a day and a half with saxophonist/flautist Karl Denson. No matter how they push the limits of the organ trio, they always come back to their bread and butter: blistering solos and grooves that don’t quit.

Between the potency of his incredibly deep songwriting, his soulful vocals and his subtle, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. Osborne is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. OffBeat magazine recently named Osborne the Crescent City’s Best Roots Rock Artist and declared him the city’s Best Guitarist for the second straight year. Since the release of his 2010 debut, American Patchwork and his 2012 follow-up Black Eye Galaxy, Osborne has earned hordes of new fans. Relix magazine said Osborne has, “A phenomenal blend of self-awareness, spirit and muscle.” In late 2012, Osborne recorded his new six-song EP, Three Free Amigos, a semi-acoustic collection cut in a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere, with friends joining him in various combinations, creating true musical magic.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

“Women in Comics” celebrates the contributions from female creators in the sequential arts medium known as comics. Since the inception of this American Pop culture, women have always played a role as pencilers, inkers and even writers in the comic industry, but were never known because of their pseudonyms which rendered them sexless and misled the public to believe that they were males. The reasoning behind the pseudonyms was related to gaining employment as a writer or artist. Decades later, women today still are challenged to make their mark in a cartoon world overshadowed by muscles, testosterone and capes. “Women in Comics” unveils the mask of these heroine comic artists, writers, film makers, animators, characters and self publishers. “Women in Comics” is a Bronx Heroes® event and is curated by Ray Felix and Regine Sawyer.

<![CDATA[The New Street Types of New York]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/23/the-new-street-types-of-new-york http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/23/the-new-street-types-of-new-york Date: July 23, 2013
