The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Join us for the 14th season of our free, outdoor film series! This year's theme, "With Love From..." tours cities from around the globe with a lineup of fantastic films.

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). A master of capturing the trials and triumphs of teenage freedom, Director John Hughes blends satire, social commentary, and pure fun. [PG-13] Short film: Creep by Sharif Anthony. DJ: Still Life

July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. Perhaps the seminal Kung Fu film of the 1970’s, Lee’s final film features the martial arts master at the height of his career with superbly staged fight scenes in a variety of styles. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. The 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book whisks five kids into a world of pure imagination complete with chocolate rivers, fizzy lifting drink, and singing Umpa Lumpas. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

August 8 - Roman Holiday
Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) is an unsatisfied princess who, in an attempt to find her freedom, winds up stumbling into the apartment of reporter – and bachelor – Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). The two dodge her secret service guards all throughout the city while giving the Princess a taste of the real world. [NR] Short film: How She Slept At Night by Lilli Carré DJ: $mall ¢hange

August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Set on the eve of the Philadelphian Bicentennial, Rocky took Hollywood by surprise, as the rags-to-riches classic creamed box offices and won the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to featuring one of film history’s most iconic training montages. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). Hailed as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works, winding through the streets of San Francisco in dazzlingly rich Technicolor, Vertigo weaves a dizzying story of love and obsession. [PG] Short film: My Favorite Picture of You by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin DJ: Geko Jones

August 29 - PUBLIC VOTE!
As is tradition, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Syfy invite the public to vote on the last film of the summer starting on August 22. Check out the contenders below (rained-out films will also be entered into the running):

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) take on the spiraling psychedelic safari of 1970s Las Vegas on a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. Terry Gilliam’s highly stylized trip of a film captures all the whit, humor and horror of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic work of Gonzo journalism. [R]
  • Good Will Hunting
At one of Boston’s top universities, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is discovered after solving one of the schools most vexing math equations, but the future of this brilliant mind depends on the guidance of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). [R]
  • Lost in Translation
Two lonely strangers, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray), forge a touching and unexpected friendship while adventuring through high-speed Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning film. [R]

Under the direction of Keito St. James, the group has toured the United States, awakening its audiences to tantalizing rhythms of the native drums and exciting dances of Hawaii. Hula Halua Ka'epa has entertained corporations and private parties throughout the U.S. for the past decade.

In Hawaiian, Hula Halau Ka'epa means dance (hula), school (halau) and the edge of a new beginning (Ka’epa). Our mission is to educate the community on indigenous cultures by creating colorful and memorable venues of authentic performing arts presentations, and to encourage greater appreciation of the ethnic culture through dance, heritage, language, music, storytelling and art.

Aloha! Hula Halau Ka'epa is a power-packed Polynesian dance spectacular featuring beautiful exotic island dancers who sway their hips to the rhythmic call of Live drums. The native girls are arrayed in full colorful costume as they step with fascinating undulating control.

<![CDATA[Das EFX / Special Ed / Chubb Rock / Black Sheep / Marley Marl / hosted by Bob Lee in association with WBLS]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/18/black-sheep-das-effects-marley-marl-hosted-by-bob-lee-in-association-with-wbls http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/18/black-sheep-das-effects-marley-marl-hosted-by-bob-lee-in-association-with-wbls Date: July 18, 2013

Consisting of Skoob and Krazy Drayzy, Das EFX has been around the music game for a long time. The duo gained critical and commercial fame with the release of their landmark debut album, Dead Serious, which highlighted their unusual rapping style which they nicknamed “sewage”. Dead Serious went platinum and its lead single, “They Want EFX,” reached the top ten on Billboard Magazine’s R&B chart, the top 40 on its Hot 100 Singles chart and #1 on its Hot Rap Tracks chart. Das EFX returned in 1998 with the album Generation EFX and followed up in 2003 with the album How We Do. The duo is currently working on a new album.

Special Ed's talent to throw out line after line of flowing lyrics with a rapid-fire delivery got him his big break after impressing the respected Hip-Hop producer Howie Tee. Hailing from Brooklyn, Ed used his neighborhood landscape to inspire some of his lyrics as he described the sights and sounds of his Flatbush neighborhood. His debut album, Youngest in Charge was on the Billboard charts for 38 weeks and featured, “I’m the Magnificent” and “I Got it Made,” which achieved “classic” status in the Hip-Hop community.

Chubb Rock, often compared to a Hip-Hop Barry White, dropped out of pre-med at Brown University to pursue his musical career. Regarded as one of the East Coast’s most dexterous rappers, he first appeared on the national Rap scene with his self-titled debut, Chubb Rock. His 1991 release, The One, reached #13 on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart that year. Three singles from that release made it to #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Single chart that same year including, the classic song, “Treat Em Right,” “Just the Two of Us” and “Lost in the Storm.”

Black Sheep is a Hip-Hop duo from New York, composed of Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean. The group was an affiliate of the Native Tongues collective, a group of Hip-Hop artists known for their positive-minded, good natured Afro-centric lyrics, and for pioneering the use of eclectic sampling and later Jazz-influenced beats. Black Sheep debuted in 1991 with the hit song “Flavor of the Month” and later released its first album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, which generated the classic “The Choice is Yours” and gained them praise and recognition in the Hip-Hop community for the album's unique rhythms and intelligent lyrics.

One of Hip-Hop's first super-producers, Marley Marl was an early innovator in the art of sampling, that resulted in some of the sharpest beats and hooks during rap’s Golden Age. As the founder of Cold Chillin’ Records, Marl assembled a roster filled with some of the finest Hip-Hop talent in New York during the 1980s. His production work for those and many other artists boasted a bright, booming, and robust sound that helped move street-level Hip-Hop’s into more mainstream territory. His production credits span Hip-Hop royalty including, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Capone-N-Noreaga, and Fat Joe.

“Doctor” Bob Lee is one of the most recognized entertainment personalities in New York, with his career in radio, music and television spanning over 30 years. You can hear Lee on WBLS at midnight every Sunday through Thursday as he spins today’s R&B and Classical Soul hits until 5 A.M, and on air every day with his “Daily Dose” series tackling health issues which affect the community.

Jumanji is a visually elaborate fantasy about an enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a jungle universe. Two young children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), discover the game in an abandoned home and suddenly are greeted by Alan (Robin Williams), an adult who has spent his life trapped inside the game since playing it at age 12. Alan's only hope for freedom involves finishing the game, but this proves rather dangerous, as Judy, Peter, and Alan find themselves running for their lives from huge rhinoceroses, evil monkeys, vicious lions, and other terrifying jungle beasts. Director Joe Johnston, whose special-effects background previously came to good use in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, used groundbreaking computer imagery to simulate the thrills.
