12x12 is a model display of a sustainably-built, off-grid tiny house. The house is a simple modular space with a rainwater-collecting butterfly roof, and wall panels inscribed with text and information from William Powers’ book “12x12” which details his experience living in the structure. The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Fanfare Ciocarlia is one of the world's greatest live bands, their energy and ingenuity having won them fans from Melbourne to Memphis, Tokyo to Toulouse. The National Geographic has said “the music of Fanfare Ciocarlia pulls not only from the band's homeland but also rhythms from Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia to make a complete Balkan stew.” The Romanian group’s breakneck speed, technical chops, ripping rhythms and sweet and sour horns is quite different from any other brass band on earth. Having released eight albums, several of which have topped the European World Music charts, Fanfare Ciocarlia has performed at concerts around the world, showcasing their unique style and unconventional ways. Put simply: nobody does it better, harder, faster, funkier than Fanfare Ciocarlia.

Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian Bhangra rhythms with elements of Jazz, Go-Go, brass Funk, and Hip-Hop. Although Red Baraat has performed at prestigious venues such as the White House and the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, their bread and butter remains the sweaty clubs, festivals, packed performing arts centers, and college auditoriums that have kept the band on the road all over the world. Their new album, Shruggy Ji, debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts and received critical praise from NPR to the Wall Street Journal.

DJ Joro-Boro is a crunk charlatan from the Balkans, who plays and promotes etnoteck, glitch-folk and post-national bass - the dirty local side of globalization force-fed back into a party without borders detonating the conglomerated mono-culture. DJ Joro-Boro hosted “MoGlo” (Modern Global) on Radio New York 91.5FM, has toured with Balkan Beat Box, and has performed with artists ranging from Bassnectar to Tinariwen.

<![CDATA[the little OPERA theatre of ny: Liberte, Egalite, et Fraternite]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/14/the-little-opera-theatre-of-ny-presents-libert-egalit-et-fraternit http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/14/the-little-opera-theatre-of-ny-presents-libert-egalit-et-fraternit Date: July 14, 2013

This Bastille Day, the little OPERA theatre of ny, in partnership with Socrates Sculpture Park, will present an afternoon of free French opera with Liberte, Egalite, et Fraternite. Composers will include Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Francis Poulenc, Umberto Giordano, and Georges Bizet.

Chevalier de Saint-Georges, often called “The Black Mozart,” lived and fought during the revolution. Born in Guadeloupe, he was the son of a French Plantation owner and a slave who moved to Paris to live in Marie Antoinette’s court. The concert at Socrates Sculpture Park features music from his opera L’Amant anonyme, [1780], which tells the story of a lover who is afraid to reveal his true identity to the object of his affections.

Dialogues des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc was written during the twentieth century, but is set during the period of the French revolution. It looks at the events of the revolution and terror from the perspective of the nuns and clergy who maintained their ideals throughout the time of upheaval.

In Andrea Chénier, Italian verismo composer Umberto Giordano was inspired by events of the revolution, and the historical French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the final days of the “Reign of Terror.”

The spirit of the independence is embodied in what is perhaps the most iconic and popular of French operas, Carmen, by Georges Bizet. An operatic tribute to French culture would not be complete without it.

Featured in the concert are Emmy winning soprano Adrienne Danrich (Aida/Annapolis Opera, Tulsa Opera; This Little Light of Mine/Milwaukee Public Television; Serena, Porgy and Bess/Cincinnati Opera, Skylight Music Theater); mezzo soprano MaryAnn McCormick (Soeur Mathilde, Dialogues des Carmélites, Die Walküre/MET upcoming Suzuki, Madame Butterfly/Lyric Opera of Chicago; Dr. Sun Yat Sen/Santa Fe Opera); soprano Jennifer Moore (Mimì, La bohème; Ninetta, La gazza ladra (Bronx Opera); Dialogues des Carmélites, dell’Arte Opera Ensemble); baritone Robert Balonek (¡Figaro90210/Morningside Opera; upcoming: Handel’s Alceste/the American Classical Orchestra; Escamillo, Carmen/ Opera Hamilton); tenor Aubry Bryan (Mon Pauvre Coeur, Les Musique des Créoles Noirs, An Evening with Chevalier de Saint-Georges); and tenor Nicholas Simpson (Beethoven's Missa solemnis/Brooklyn Symphony; l sogno di Scipione/Gotham Opera, upcoming Silent Night/Fort Worth Opera).

The concert will be led by from the piano by music director Catherine Miller (Opera: The Reformed Drunkard, Travelers, The Mother of Us All, Two Little Tragedies of Pushkin, The Bohemians, Man in a Black Coat/ the little OPERA theatre of ny), and directed by Philip Shneidman (Founder of the little opera theatre of NY). Shneidman’s most recent work was Gluck’s The Reformed Drunkard in a new adaptation and translation, and Travelers, an original double bill of two one act operas by Gustav Holst. For little OPERA he has also directed Mitridate, re di Ponto - the NYC stage premiere; La finta giardiniera, The Mother of Us All with the artist Sherrie Levine; and 2 Little Tragedies of Pushkin with Mungo Thomson.
