The 9th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF) returns this week with events to celebrate Hip-Hop music and culture!

Family Day is a good old fashioned, pop the sprinklers, speakers in the window, block party. Before we get busy on our last day, we take a moment for the little duns. Family Day is a time for parents, babies, teens and grandma to have some 'momma' approved fun while we teach the youth about what Hip Hop is all about. Come enjoy kid-friendly music, demos, workshops and more from a whole host of local, community oriented organizations.

This event is immediately followed by the Final Throwdown, with performances by EPMD, Redman, Pusha T, Dizzy Wright, Soul Understated, DJ Enuff's tribute to MCA, along with upcoming local talent: F.Stokes, Danse Daimons, Justo, DyMe-A-Duzin, Dillon Cooper and more!

City Parks Foundation's Puppet Mobile, one of the only traveling puppet theaters in the country, brings Swedish Cottage productions and puppet-making workshops to all corners of the city, free of charge. Traveling the five boroughs of the city in a PuppetMobile equipped with a stage and staff of professional puppeteers, we bring entertainment to 50,000 children and families each year.

In our current production of "Little Red's Hood", Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Come watch this original show created specifically for the PuppetMobile and find out what happens.

Julieta Venegas is a renowned Mexican singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. With over six released albums to date, Venegas has sold more than 9 million copies of her albums worldwide. The Washington Post describes Venegas as a different sort of artist. “While many of her songs will entice you to get up and dance, there is also an intimacy to her work that comes through even for those whose Spanish doesn't go much beyond “hola.” Throughout the years, Venegas has received myriad nominations and recognitions, including winning several GRAMMY Awards and five Latin GRAMMY Awards. With Moments, Venegas’ 6th album, released in March of 2013, it is evident that this she is continuing her dominance in the Latin music world.

Carla Morrison is a Mexican Alternative-Pop songstress with international recognition who released her debut, self-produced EP back in 2010. Only two years later, she won 2 Latin GRAMMY Awards – Best Alternative Album and Best Alternative Song – for her most recent and most personal album yet, Dejenme Llorar (Let Me Cry) released in 2012. Her angelically peaceful and lamenting voice brings listeners on an emotional rollercoaster with moments of both heartbreak and uplifting hope, which touch both their ears and their hearts. MTV Iggy has taken notice of Morrison’s captivating presence when she stands on stage with just her pure voice and a guitar, boastings that her “no-frills approach to music-making comes easy for an artist like Morrison, who has talent to spare.”

Named by TIME Magazine as an artist “poised for US stardom" Alex Anwandter brings together 80's-influenced dance music and emotional songwriting, presented with an engaging live performance full of intimacy and showmanship. His solo debut Rebeldes features poignant lyrics that tug at heart-strings, while crisp percussion and upbeat basslines keep the body moving. The album has been featured everywhere from PerezHilton.com to Vice, MTV Iggy and Billboard, with NPR celebrating his music video homage to “Paris is Burning” for its courageous message of equality, love, and acceptance.

Forming in the Bronx streets during the 1960s, The Ghetto Brothers uplifted their NYC community through Hip-Hop music, helping to eradicate pushers from their neighborhood, cleaning up parks and garbage-strewn empty lots, and enlisting interest in community involvement. Soon after they formed, The Ghetto Brothers quickly cooked up a potent, NYC-flavored musical stew that gained the attention of local record stores with their soulful Hip-Hop songs. In 1972, The Ghetto Brothers released their debut album, Power Fuerza¸ which was a beautiful, innocent audio snapshot by three brothers, their friends, and a powerful gang of musical energy. In 2011, The Ghetto Brothers released Power Fuerza – Deluxe Reissue, which NPR describes as “a time capsule of sorts, but its message hasn't dulled with the intervening years: Choose guitars over guns, and let music be your mayhem.”

From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale is an hour-long documentary that tells the story about the creative life of the South Bronx. Beginning with the Puerto Rican migration and the adoption of Cuban rhythms to create the New York Salsa sound and continuing with the fires that destroyed the neighborhood but not the creative spirit of its people; the film chronicles the rise of Hip-Hop from the ashes. A charismatic reflection on the power of a neighborhood’s music, the film effortlessly chronicles the evolution from Mambo to Hip-Hop; which has taken the world’s pop culture by storm. The documentary, directed by Henry Chalfant features interviews with numerous famed musicians and dancers that showcases the history and diversity of Hip-Hop's reach.

Music & Movies

The last time we screened the 1931 Bela Lugosi classic, DRACULA with Philip Glass' equally classic original score performed live, thunder rolled, lightening streaked the sky, and torrents of rain worthy of Transylvania chased everyone out of the park half way through. We’re having another go in honor of our 35th season, and adding an opening set by the diabolically talented violinist and singer Kishi Bashi, a cohort of Regina Spektor and Of Montreal “who's creating something haunting, beautiful and maybe a little off-kilter through the technology of looping.” (NPR)
