Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Join a curatorial fellow for a tour of three current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Gregory Crewdson’s Fireflies series is being shown for the first time in its entirety; Crewdson’s photographs capture the fleeting light of these nocturnal creatures. In the Sunroom Project Space, Lauren Carly Shaw transforms the space into the setting of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper(1899), set in the late 19th century, when the original Glyndor House was constructed. Shaw chronicles the effect of confinement on a woman’s mental state. In the Sun Porch space, Reade Bryan’s sculptural installation investigates the way that iconic building materials, such as plywood and drywall supplies, are created and used. Here he evokes the effects of a flood or the mass of a cliff’s edge; the natural landscape appears to intrude on the interior, although the sculpture itself is made of domestic building material.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Típica 73 with guest: Adalberto Santiago / Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/05/summerstage-tipica-73-with-guest-adelberto-santiago-williamsburg-salsa-orchestra http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/05/summerstage-tipica-73-with-guest-adelberto-santiago-williamsburg-salsa-orchestra Date: August 5, 2014

Típica ’73 began with a “Jam Session” Charanga (Flute/Violin) format in 1972 at an East Side club called “…and Vinnie’s. Eventually, it evolved into a 3-horn conjunto (combo) with Adalberto Santiago as lead vocalist. In 1975 Típica ’73 began recording “New Wave” Cuban music “La Candela,” “No Me Critiques,” and “La Escoba Barrendera”. In 1976, after a split due to creative differences, Típica ’73 emerged with a new format, which included the addition of a Flute/Sax, a Violin and Tito Allen as lead vocalist. Subsequent lead vocalists included Camilo Azuquita and José Alberto (El Canario). José Alberto was the vocalist in 1978 when Típica ’73 recorded the historic LP “Intercambio Cultural” (Cultural Exchange) at EGREM studios in Havana, Cuba. In 1983, Típica ’73 disbanded due to pressure and blacklisting stemming from the trip to Cuba. After an occasional reunion gig, and under the co-direction of founding members, Johnny Rodríguez and Sonny Bravo, Típica ’73 finally returned to its Charanga (Flute/Violin) roots and is currently performing with that format.

The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is a thrilling 11-piece salsa group which plays dynamic, dura arrangements of indie rock tunes we love. No bananas in the hair; this is innovative, astonishing salsa with a new, vibrant aesthetic. With an ever-evolving set list that includes songs by Arcade Fire, TV On The Radio, Spoon, M83, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Black Keys, and many more, the WSO has taken the typical salsa form and infused it with a completely modern identity. The explosive arrangements have established the band as a groundbreaking force in the New York underground, and has let to international acclaim for its completely new approach to the genre. Led by percussionist/arranger Gianni Mano (from the Latin-funk legends Radio Mundial), and fronted by Argentinian chanteuse, Solange Prat, the WSO has found an audience among new and classic salsa lovers, quickly becoming one of the most popular bands in New York City. The WSO has been featured recently in Rolling Stone Magazine (on the 2013 Latin Hot List), and on MTV Iggy, Telemundo, Univision, and on the nationally syndicated program LatiNation on Fox.

Urban Theatre Movement's Handball, written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and directed by Brenda Banda delivers an explosive take on gentrification in New York City. The play tracks a park filled with characters as unique and diverse as the city itself. Tempers flare as new transplants work to make their mark while old residents struggle to maintain their way of life. Over the course of two hot, summer days we watch a once lively, buoyant park become extremely tense as each character struggles to find their way and survive while witnessing their neighborhood falling apart. Stories become intertwined, power is shifted and change reveals itself to be inevitable. Handball tells the story of modern-day urban America and the people struggling to find their way in it.

Treat your child to a day camp like they've only imagined at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century and dressed in period style clothing, campers learn about the Van Cortlandt Family and the history that happened here all while having fun.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2014. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

As childhood friends growing up in Denver Colorado, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, The Okee Dokee Brothers, were always exploring the outdoors. Whether it was rafting down their neighborhood creek, taking long bike rides into the country or discovering hiking trails through the Rocky Mountains, Joe and Justin were born adventurers. Their extended canoe trip down the Mississippi River inspired their GRAMMY Award winning album Can You Canoe? (2013 Best Children's Album) and their trek along the Appalachian Trail is the subject of their forthcoming release, Through the Woods (available May 20, 2014). With songs written by campfire and harmonies born on the water, the natural world is at the heart of their Americana folk music.

City Parks Foundation is excited to announce the return of its popular PuppetMobile production, Little Red’s Hood. Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Mobile Mondays! & Salsoul Records have partnered to bring you a classic NYC Dance Experience. Mobile Mondays! is the premier all 45's vinyl night & music movement with a Mission to Save the Music, Preserve DJ Culture & Bring Back the Vibe & Soul of NYC. Originating in 1974 - NYC based Salsoul Records - named by Joe Bataan for his love of Salsa & Soul Music - is one of the most influential record companies in the disco era that has shaped the dance music industry for the last 40 years. Salsoul classics like - "My Love is Free", "Let No Man Put Asunder", "Call Me", "Got My Mind Made up" helped shape today's dance music & still control dance floors to this day. The show will feature The MM All Star DJ's, Operator Emz, Joey Carvello, Natasha Diggs, Just Blaze, Misbehaviour, $$$Mike. The event will be hosted by MM Hosts Miss Rebecca & Snkr Joe & Salsoul Records Label Manager, Rachael Hardway. Mobile Mondays! takes place every Monday 10pm at The Bowery Electric & gives music lovers a chance to go back to the New York City they love best; when records were events, the DJ was on the pulpit and the dance floor was epic.

Joe Bataan, the “King of Latin Soul,” helped coin the phrase "Salsoul" in 1974 lending the name to his first album. Bataan was influenced by two musical styles: the Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop. Bataan recorded three albums and several singles for Salsoul Records and the Latin subdivision of Salsoul Records, Salsoul Leyendas. Titles include SalSoul, Rap-O-Clap-O, Joe Bataan II, Afrofilipino and a new compilation of his greatest hits titled Tropical Classics: Joe Bataan, which features the early 1979 hip-hop hit "Rap-O-Clap-O” and additional classic titles he performed for the Salsoul Leyendas label.

The three-piece female disco group First Choice was influential to early house music and the Salsoul Records movement. Their tracks “Let No Man Put Asunder” and “Dr. Love” are two of the most sampled tracks from the Salsoul catalog. Original group members Ursula Herring & Annette Hardeman will be joined on stage by disco artist Wardell Piper (“Super Sweet”) for their performance.

Double Exposure is one of the most prominent American-Disco groups of the Salsoul era known as the first group to release the 12-inch single. Their 1976 album chart-topping album Ten Percent featured a pair of major club hits including "Ten Percent" and "My Love is Free." Members James Williams, Joseph Harris, Charles Whittington & Leonard "Butch" Davis are actively touring and making music to this day.

Instant Funk burst onto the '70s disco scene with the million-selling single "I Got My Mind Made Up" and their Gold album Instant Funk. Paradise Garage DJ Larry Levan and engineer Bob Blank’s 1979 remix of “I Got My Mind Made Up” quickly flooded dance floors across the country. The band started out with the core lineup of bassist Raymond Earl, drummer Scotty Miller, and guitarist Kim Miller and later expanded to include additional members.

Skyy enjoyed worldwide success with their distinctive blend of sassy vocals, funky bass lines and thumping guitar licks. The Ladies of Skyy, Denise, Delores and Bonny are best known for their release of the Skyy Line album in late 1981. Their hit song “Call Me” became the first #1 R&B hit followed by their 1984 release of Inner City.

At a time when disco was still breaking into the mainstream, Carol Williams was one of the few female vocalists in the genre to hold stake in other creative elements of her craft besides singing. Working with producer Vincent Montana Jr., she not only selected a good share of material for her Salsoul debut album, 'Lectric Lady, but also co-wrote three selections and acted as co-publisher. 'Lectric Lady was released in 1977 and featured hits such as "Come Back" and "Love Is You."

Los Monstritos are young "monster" percussionist virtuosos who hurtle headlong into a variety of Latin music genres—from plena to boogaloo, from bomba to bachata and salsa, from rumba to meringue. To these styles, they add their own twist, reflecting the hip-hop and regaaeton rhythms of their Bronx neighborhoods. The members are Nelson Matthew Gonzalez, scion of one of the great families of Afro-Puerto Rican music; Oreste Abrantes, a Cuban Puerto Rican powerhouse conguero; and Jason Gonzalez, bongo virtuoso. Los Monstritos are pupils of some of the best Latin percussion masters of New York. Their music is sometimes hip, sometimes steeped in roots... always explosive in its delivery. At Wave Hill, the percussionists are joined by upright bass, guitar and keyboard players.

Spectrum Dance Theater was founded by Seattle dancers in 1982 to make dance more accessible to diverse communities. Under Donald Byrd’s visionary artistic leadership since 2002, Spectrum has transformed into a company of regional and national significance, igniting audiences through Byrd’s ambitious artistic agenda, whose appetite to explore the arts knows no boundaries. The dancers of Spectrum Dance Theater are a small, select group of unique dance artists from around the globe, individually chosen and trained in Mr. Byrd’s singular approach to dance/theater - physically demanding and emotionally charged. The company has produced thrilling and challenging works in contemporary dance to critical acclaim. Donald Byrd achieved international visibility for the creation of his Harlem Nutcracker and for his Tony-nominated choreography for the Broadway smash, The Color Purple. No less ambitious in the 21st century, Byrd leads the company through programming themes that give audiences insight into his far-ranging artistic ambition.\

Sidra Bell Dance New York, is a boutique company of prolific movement artists based in New York City that presents innovative, kinetic, and provocative dance theater works. It has continually presented progressive, highly designed, cinematic, glamorous, and elaborate full-scale productions to sold-out audiences. Bell is a sought after voice in contemporary dance with a strong female vision creating works that ignite the imagination and explore the psyche. The repertoire is unusual, haunting, emotionally transporting, articulate, sensual, and highly physical. The work has become known for an atmospheric, unconventional, and spectacular quality that pushes past traditional boundaries. The company synthesizes the worlds of design, media, fashion, and spectatorship. THINK.FEEL.PLAY.EXPERIENCE.
