NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

Drifting in Daylight is a dreamy springtime pathway of art that winds through the world’s most iconic park. The multi-part art installation includes performative, participatory, and perceptual work by artists Spencer Finch, Alicia Framis, Nina Katchadourian, Ragnar Kjartansson, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, David Levine, Karyn Olivier, and Lauri Stallings + glo. These works include a soft-serve ice cream truck serving free cones containing ice cream the color of a Central Park sunset, a boat filled with musicians floating on the Harlem Meer, and actors quietly performing moments from iconic movie scenes shot in the park.

As the centerpiece of Central Park Conservancy’s 35th anniversary celebration, this free public exhibition aims to draw visitors into the park’s beautiful north end, much of which has been expertly restored by the Conservancy. The six-weekend show will tempt visitors to transcend their busy lives, losing themselves along a playful trail of sensory experiences.

In the main gallery, Chris Doyle: Landscape Fictions brings to life the Hudson River. An artist whose sense of craft verges on the obsessive, Doyle presents three animations from a decades-long practice animating the natural world that exists on the urban fringes. This exhibition accompanies The Lightening, a site-specific project installed in the Aquatic Garden that combines mirrored surfaces with backlit animations into an artwork that changes as the day turns into night. At the same time, in the Sunroom Project Space, Kiran Chandra explores the “swarm” as a social form through a sculptural and sonic interpretation of Eugene Marais’ The Soul of the White Ant. On display in Eliza’s Tredwell’s bedroom: a two-piece day ensemble, ca. 1858, made of green silk taffeta trimmed with wide bands of black cut-silk velvet and narrow ruffles of cream-colored bobbin lace. It is likely this dress had an additional bodice with a lower neckline and shorter sleeves, which would have changed it into an evening ensemble. Also on exhibit is a theater handbill from 1860, which was discovered in the early 1960s in the pocket of the dress. The handbill is from Laura Keene’s Theatre, then located at 624 Broadway, just blocks from the Tredwells’ home.

Keene may be best known as the actress performing in Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre the night Abraham Lincoln was shot in April 1865. Keene rushed with water to the president’s side and cradled Lincoln’s head in her lap while waiting for help to arrive. One of her blood-stained dress cuffs is in the collection of the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Exhibition talk by Pamela Long, Textile Conservator.

When is retreat a tactical victory? Washington and the Continental Army couldn't hope to go toe to toe against the greatest military force the world had ever seen and survive. The New York campaign was central to Washington's unorthodox military strategy and the fate of our nascent nation hung in the balance. Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors in Sunlight, Water and Gravity. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.
