Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Lila Downs embraces and highlights her origins in the U.S. and Mexico. Downs' roots have always been an important aspect of her music, as well as the topics of political and social justice, immigration, and transformation, all embedded in the human condition. For over a decade, Lila Downs has traversed the planet, bringing her dramatic and highly unique reinvention of traditional Mexican music and original compositions fused with Blues, Jazz, Soul, and African roots. Downs has long been recognized by the music industry, receiving a Latin GRAMMY for the 2004 release, Una Sangre and a GRAMMY nomination for 2008’s Shake Away, which was also named one of the top ten albums of that year by WOMEX, the leading world music organization. In 2012, Downs released her album, Pecados Y Milagros, which won a Latin GRAMMY for Best Folk Album and a GRAMMY award in 2013 for Best Regional Mexican Album.

Known as the long-time live voice of Thievery Corporation, Natalia Clavier’s new solo album, Lumen was produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Adrian Quesada. With a sultry mix of Jazz-inspired vocals, electronic textures and global influences, Lumen further develops the sound Clavier cultivated while recording and touring with both Thievery Corporation and her husband, Argentinean singer-songwriter Federico Aubele.

Born and raised in Lima, Pamela Rodriguez has always been enticed by other paths of life, territories and cities. In her lyrics, Rodriguez intertwines topics of love and indifference with her own experiences to create melodies out of feminine intuition and the instinctive need to interpret reality through a song. In 2006, Rodriguez was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY Award as “Best New Artist” and in 2012 received a second nomination for “Best Contemporary Pop Album”. Rodriguez has recorded three albums, with her most recent, Reconocer, being released in 2011. In her latest album, Rodriguez reflects on her recent experiences and tells her audience about exile, freedom, love and maternity, and her constant changes of countries and the sounds between here and there. The album has fresh sounds, Indie Pop and Alternative music influences, as it showcases Rodriguez’s ability to incorporate different themes and styles into her lyrics to create a musical masterpiece.

The voice of pirate radio in the mid-90s and a native Angeleno, Raul Campos has come from the underground to represent the eclectic airwaves of KCRW in Los Angeles. Campos brings his audience to a place where funky beats, underground rhythms, heartbroken guitars, Latin-loving and daring melodies live. Campos also continues his work behind the scenes as a remixer, putting his special spin on tracks by famed artists such as Femi Kuti, Jill Scott and many more.

2013 marks Hudson River Park’s RiverRocks 15th Season. RiverRocks is among New York City’s quintessential free outdoor summer concert series and features established and breaking artists performing at the beautiful Pier 84.

New Orleans’ Generationals have established themselves as the go-to band for sunny pop songs influenced by music of the British Invasion, Soul Stax and Wall of Sound production.

Like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Waits, Sallie Ford has established herself as one of the most powerful female voices in indie rock, mining that sweet spot between modern and vintage. On their new album, Untamed Beast, the band creates a powerful statement on finding freedom through defying conformity. According to Sallie: ”rock n roll isn’t a genre, its energy.”

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). A master of capturing the trials and triumphs of teenage freedom, Director John Hughes blends satire, social commentary, and pure fun. [PG-13] Short film: Creep by Sharif Anthony. DJ: Still Life

July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. The 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book whisks five kids into a world of pure imagination complete with chocolate rivers, fizzy lifting drink, and singing Umpa Lumpas. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Set on the eve of the Philadelphian Bicentennial, Rocky took Hollywood by surprise, as the rags-to-riches classic creamed box offices and won the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to featuring one of film history’s most iconic training montages. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). Hailed as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works, winding through the streets of San Francisco in dazzlingly rich Technicolor, Vertigo weaves a dizzying story of love and obsession. [PG] Short film: My Favorite Picture of You by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin DJ: Geko Jones

August 29 - PUBLIC VOTE!
As is tradition, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Syfy invite the public to vote on the last film of the summer starting on August 22. Check out the contenders below (rained-out films will also be entered into the running):

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) take on the spiraling psychedelic safari of 1970s Las Vegas on a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. Terry Gilliam’s highly stylized trip of a film captures all the whit, humor and horror of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic work of Gonzo journalism. [R]
  • Good Will Hunting
At one of Boston’s top universities, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is discovered after solving one of the schools most vexing math equations, but the future of this brilliant mind depends on the guidance of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). [R]
  • Lost in Translation
Two lonely strangers, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray), forge a touching and unexpected friendship while adventuring through high-speed Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning film. [R]

It’s been a long 10 years since everyone's favorite Scottish indie band has graced the Bandshell stage, but thankfully Belle and Sebastian will be back in the park for our 35th Anniversary season.

Hailing from Glasgow, Belle and Sebastian have enjoyed much critical success since their first album Tigermilk in 1996. Since then they’ve sold over three million albums and have captured the hearts of anyone with even the slightest penchant for indie pop.

Despite their large band, Belle and Sebastian’s music comes across as effortlessly cool and deceptively simple. That said, they are consistently lauded for their musicality and no album review can avoid praising the band’s songcraft.

With the release of their new album featuring rarities and b-sides this June and a promise to hit the studio post-tour, this show, which will also feature Yo La Tengo, will be the perfect time and place to indulge your nostalgia for the '90s while looking forward to a great future for your ears.
