Alamar is a love story between father and son, man and nature, water and sky, set in the turquoise waters of Banco Chinchorro in the Caribbean, home to thousands of species of fish. The film – somewhere between fiction and documentary – tells the story of a young boy whose divorced parents (Italian mother, Mexican father) make him a child of two worlds. A father transports his urban son to this natural paradise to teach him to dive for lobster and fish for barracuda, spending days on a tiny fishing boat and nights in a reed-roofed cabin that floats atop the water.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food. Outdoor Cinema 2013 includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. The festival kicks off on July 3rd with a new American film to welcome Independence Day weekend: Our Nixon, a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane, first debuted in March at SXSW and to be released in theaters in July 2013. Outdoor Cinema 2013 features eight international titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States – selected by Karen Cooper, Director, and Mike Maggiore, Programmer and Publicist, Film Forum, and Dan Nuxoll, Program Director, and Mark Elijah Rosenberg, Artistic Director, Rooftop Films.

In addition to the films, which are presented in their original language (with English subtitles), each evening will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the film. Pre-screening performances begin at 7:00pm and films begin at sunset (weather permitting). From 6pm-8pm, we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.
Admission is free, and the evening’s food and performance line-up is announced the week prior.

Jumanji is a visually elaborate fantasy about an enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a jungle universe. Two young children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), discover the game in an abandoned home and suddenly are greeted by Alan (Robin Williams), an adult who has spent his life trapped inside the game since playing it at age 12. Alan's only hope for freedom involves finishing the game, but this proves rather dangerous, as Judy, Peter, and Alan find themselves running for their lives from huge rhinoceroses, evil monkeys, vicious lions, and other terrifying jungle beasts. Director Joe Johnston, whose special-effects background previously came to good use in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, used groundbreaking computer imagery to simulate the thrills.

Thanks to his starring role on a hit television show, Bolt the pooch has become a household name. But Bolt has bought into his own heroic image, now believing that he really possesses the super-canine powers of his fictional television series. When he's accidentally shipped from Hollywood to New York City, he must rely on the help from his two newfound friends -- an abandoned house cat named Mittens (voiced by Susie Essman) and a television-addicted hamster named Rhino (voice of Mark Walton) -- as he embarks on a cross-country quest to get back to his owner (and co-star), Penny (voice of Miley Cyrus).

Maurice Pialat's1972 drama, "We Won’t Grow Old Together (Nous Ne Vieillirons Pas Ensemble) " tells the story of Jean, an unpleasant, domineering man. Though he still lives with his wife, their marriage has been over for quite some time. All the while, he has been having an affair with the much-younger Catherine. The relationship is moving toward disintegration, and although Catherine resists it, alternating recriminations and reconciliations hasten their inevitable breakup.

In Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph (John C. Reilly) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer), the "good guy" star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he's tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he's got what it takes to be a hero. On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch) from the first-person action game Hero's Duty. But it's the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Will Ralph realize his dream and save the day before it's too late?

In In Another Country, French actress Isabelle Huppert stars (three times!) in this comedy/drama – a triptych set in a Korean seaside town. Huppert plays three different Annes – a successful film director on holiday with a Korean director and his wife; a married woman having an affair with a Korean man; and a recent divorcée whose husband left her for a Korean woman. Three breezy tales of love, lust, and misunderstandings, all peppered by the dimly jovial propositions of one persistent lifeguard.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food. It includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. The festival kicks off on July 3rd with a new American film to welcome Independence Day weekend: Our Nixon, a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane, first debuted in March at SXSW and to be released in theaters in July 2013. Outdoor Cinema 2013 features eight international titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States.

From 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.
Admission is free, and the evening’s food and performance line-up is announced the week prior.

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Set on the eve of the Philadelphian Bicentennial, Rocky took Hollywood by surprise, as the rags-to-riches classic creamed box offices and won the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to featuring one of film history’s most iconic training montages. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). Hailed as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works, winding through the streets of San Francisco in dazzlingly rich Technicolor, Vertigo weaves a dizzying story of love and obsession. [PG] Short film: My Favorite Picture of You by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin DJ: Geko Jones

August 29 - PUBLIC VOTE!
As is tradition, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Syfy invite the public to vote on the last film of the summer starting on August 22. Check out the contenders below (rained-out films will also be entered into the running):

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) take on the spiraling psychedelic safari of 1970s Las Vegas on a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. Terry Gilliam’s highly stylized trip of a film captures all the whit, humor and horror of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic work of Gonzo journalism. [R]
  • Good Will Hunting
At one of Boston’s top universities, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is discovered after solving one of the schools most vexing math equations, but the future of this brilliant mind depends on the guidance of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). [R]

In Surf's Up, a surfing penguin currently riding the wave of success enters his first professional competition in this computer-animated family-oriented comedy from directors Chris Buck and Ash Brannon. Cody Maverick (Shia LaBeouf) may be a relative amateur when it comes to hanging ten, but he's sure he has what it takes to surf his way to superstardom. With a little help from his cantankerous King Penguin mentor, ex-surfing legend Big Z (Jeff Bridges), and a little encouragement from star Pen Gu Island lifeguard Lani (Zooey Deschanel), there may be hope for this tuxedo-clad wave twister after all. James Woods, Jane Krakowski, Michael McKean, Jon Heder, Mario Cantone, and Brian Benben all lend their voices to this inspirational tale that proves anything is possible when you put your heart and mind to it.

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). In Sugar, Miguel, a Dominican baseball pitcher from the small town of San Pedro De Macorís, single-mindedly focuses on training at a pro baseball academy – as so many in his country do –awaiting his chance to graduate to the minor leagues in the U.S., and to help pull his family out of poverty. At 19, he gets his break – a call-up to spring training for a team in Iowa – but what happens when his game falters? And were all the sacrifices worth it? A beautifully filmed, exquisitely acted drama from Brooklyn filmmakers Boden & Fleck that takes a bracing new look at a fractured American dream.
Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food.
