Paris Is Burning is an intimate and moving portrait of the Harlem drag balls of the 1980s, which were, and are still held between rival “houses” that served at once as intentional families, social groups and performance teams. The film illuminates a world of sustenance and joy that one group of New Yorkers created in the face of racism, poverty, transphobia and homophobia, and won wide acclaim beyond Sundance. It also spurred both controversy and progress, and 24 years later remains a unique and powerful film for all audiences that is still an organizing tool for gay and trans youth; a focus of scholarship on issues of race, class and gender; and a way for young ball participants and queer people to meet their ancestors.

The event will feature an introduction by director Jennie Livingston and by Junior LaBeija and Dr. Sol Williams Pendavis, both of whom are featured in the film. Before the screening, fellow Paris Is Burning cast members Grandfather Hector Xtravaganza and Jose Disla Xtravaganza present The Houses United Ball: Celebrating Brooklyn, which will feature members of the Houses of LaBeija, Ninja, Mizrahi, Khan, Infinity, Milan, Princess and Xtravaganza. Annie is a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. - Paraphrase description from Swank website.

Paddington tells the story of a young bear (Ben Whishaw) who loses his home in a deadly earthquake in the Peruvian rain forest. In search of a new home, he makes his way to England and finds himself at the "Paddington" train station in London. He finds shelter with the family of Henry (Hugh Bonneville) and Mary Brown (Sally Hawkins). Although Paddington's amazement at urban living soon endears him to the Browns, someone else has her eye on him: Taxidermist Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman) has designs on the rare bear and his hide. Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Don't Look Back

Arguably the greatest music documentary ever. Bob Dylan’s 1965 British tour, intimately recorded by legendary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker, reveals the genius/enfant terrible at the height of his growling ‘60s counter-culture persona, whether astonishing audiences with Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, Subterranean Homesick Blues, or The Times They Are A-Changin’ –or torturing a TIME magazine reporter with Sphinx-like responses. The opening sequence, with Dylan in the alleyway, discarding placards on which his lyrics are scrawled, has become a culturally iconic moving image that has been ripped off ad infinitum. See the original.

1967, 96 minutes. Directed by D.A. Pennebaker.

Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series.

The quintessential "backstage" musical 42nd Street traces the history of a Broadway musical comedy, from casting call to opening night. Warner Baxter plays famed director Julian Marsh, who despite failing health is determined to stage one last great production, "Pretty Lady." Others involved include "Pretty Lady" star Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels); Dorothy's "sugar daddy" (Guy Kibbee), who finances the show; her true love Pat (George Brent); leading man Billy Lawlor (Dick Powell); and starry-eyed chorus girl Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler). It practically goes without saying that Dorothy twists her ankle the night before the premiere, forcing Julian Marsh to put chorine Peggy into the lead: "You're going out there a youngster, but you've got to come back a star!" Delightfully corny, with hilarious wisecracking support from the likes of Ginger Rogers, Una Merkel, and George E. Stone. 42nd Street is perhaps the most famous of Warners' early-1930s Busby Berkeley musicals. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, 42nd Street is highlighted by such grandiose musical setpieces as "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," "Young and Healthy," and of course the title song. Nearly fifty years after its premiere, it was successfully revived as a Broadway musical with Tammy Grimes and Jerry Orbach. - Paraphrase from Swank website.

Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Live-In Maid

Pre-screening performances at 7 PM, film begins at sundown

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries.

2005, 83 minutes. Directed by Jorge Gaggero.

Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris' trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Writer/director John Hughes once again tries to wed satire, slapstick, and social commentary, as Ferris Bueller's Day Off starts like a house afire and goes on to make "serious" points about status-seeking and casual parental cruelties. It brightens up considerably in the last few moments, when Ferris' tattletale sister (Jennifer Grey) decides to align herself with her merry prankster sibling.

The movie is shown outside so bring a chair or blanket. Space is limited and admission is on a first come-first serve basis. The movie will begin at dusk.

SummerStage is the largest free performing arts festival in New York City. To celebrate its 30th season, SummerStage is showcasing nearly 200 unique artists.

Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros

Selected by NPR/WNYC as Manhattan’s best band of 2015, gritty, witty and streetwise, the Havana-born Gerardo Contino, “El Abogado de la Salsa,” is a Cuban singer and songwriter. This former lead singer of the Cuban mega-group NG La Banda, Contino is a party onstage: he loves to improvise, to pull the audience into call & response, and to provoke fans into hip-shaking abandon. Since moving to New York City, Gerardo started his own band, “Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros,” with Axel Tosca Laugart, Luisito Quintero, and John Benitez. They released their debut album, Somos Latinos, in 2013 to very high critical acclaim. He has toured all over the world and in his new hometown, NYC, he has performed in Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sounds of Brazil (SOBs), BB King Blues Club, Le Poisson Rouge, the Bronx Museum, Live at the Gantries, Roulette, Gonzalez y Gonzalez, Taj, and many others.

Celia the Queen

Celia the Queen, is a loving look at the amazing life and legacy of a woman whose voice symbolized the soul of a nation and captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Erupting onto the Cuban music scene as the lead singer for La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz broke down barriers of racism and sexism. With the powerful weapon of her voice and the warm tolerance of her heart, Celia soon became all things to all people. The film shows the diversity of the people whose lives she touched, from stars like Quincy Jones, Andy Garcia, and Wyclef Jean to ordinary people all over the world who loved not only her music but her incredible spirit.

One of the stars of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, is re-united with that film's composer and lyricist, Richard M.Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, in this big budget and bloodless children's fantasy musical, based on the children's book by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Van Dyke plays Caractacus Potts, a failed inventor who lives in a big house with his two children, Jemima Heather Ripley and Jeremy Adrian Hall, and eccentric father Lionel Jeffries. Potts has to raise 30 shillings so his children can buy a broken-down racing car from the junkyard. After a disastrous attempt to sell his invention of whistling sweets to Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson-Justice), the local candy maker, he finally gets enough money for the car by doing a Dick Van Dyke dance routine at the county fair. Potts takes the car and miraculously transforms the vehicle into a shiny new car named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. While on a picnic with the children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), Lord Scrumptious' beautiful daughter, Potts concocts a fantasy tale about the magical powers of the car, which can now float on water and fly. In the tale, Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe) wants the car for himself and kidnaps the automobile and the inventor. But Bomburst captures Grandpa by mistake along with the wrong car, so Potts, Truly, and the children have to enlist Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on a rescue mission to Bomburst's lair to save Grandpa. Films on the Green 2015 presents Queen to Play by Caroline Bottaro in Riverside Park Pier I.

In this film, the lovely, repressed, and quietly intelligent chambermaid Hélène comes upon a couple engaging in an intense chess match, and discovers she has a knack for the game. This obsession–much to the chagrin of her family–leads her to seek the clandestine tutelage of a reclusive American doctor–a liaison that radically transforms both of their lackluster lives.

Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series.

Perhaps the greatest movie ever shot in two days, Little Shop of Horrors was originally conceived as a followup to Roger Corman's black comedy A Bucket of Blood (1959). Jonathan Haze plays Seymour Krelboin, a schlemiel's schlemiel who works at the Skid Row flower shop of Mr. Mushnick (Mel Welles). Experimenting in his spare time, Seymour develops a new plant species that he hopes will lead him to fame and fortune. Unfortunately, the mutated plant -- named Audrey Junior, in honor of Seymour's girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph)—subsists on blood and human flesh. It also talks, or rather, commands: "Feed Me! FEEEEED ME!" Before long, the luckless Seymour has fed his plant the bodies of a railroad detective, a sadistic dentist, and a flashy trollop. Meanwhile, Mr. Mushnik, who has stumbled onto Seymour's secret, has inadvertently offered up a burglar (played by Charles Griffith, who also wrote the script and supplied the plant's voice) as a midnight snack for the voracious, ever-growing Audrey Junior. (When the plant blooms, the faces of its various victims are reproduced in its flowers.) Paraphrase from Swank website.
