In the past year the world lost both folk legend Pete Seeger and his wife of seventy years, Toshi. The Hudson River Park is proud to present the opening night of Seeger Fest, a FREE five-day event honoring the lives and legacies of Pete and Toshi Seeger through music, film and community events.

The opening night will be a screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary, Pete Seeger: The Power of Song that follows Mr. Seeger’s life as a musician and activist. The film includes interviews with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Arlo Guthrie and many others. Before the screening there will be a short concert featuring The Chapin Sisters with special guests Adira & Alana Amram, Aurora Barnes and Kristen Graves, skilled singer-songwriters who bring their own style and voice to the stage. They frequently collaborate with their father Tom Chapin and are inspired by their late uncle Harry Chapin who, like Pete, used music as a tool for social change.

After the music and before the screening, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, Pete Seeger’s grandson and associate producer of Pete Seeger: The Power of Song will briefly talk about the film and answer a few questions from the audience.

Please go to www.SeegerFest.org to learn about the additional Seeger Fest events which include a July 20th concert at Lincoln Center Out of Doors and a July 21st concert at SummerStage in Central Park.

In this film, a young couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) lead an idyllic country life until they accidentally drown and become trapped in their old house as ghosts. This ghost couple attempts to scare off a family of cosmopolitan New Yorkers that move into their home, eventually enlisting the help of an insane poltergeist, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). As part of its Outdoor Cinema 2014 season, Socrates Sculpture Park will be screening 13 Assassins, a Japanese film directed by Takashi Miike. A samurai epic set in the 19th century during the end of Japan's feudal era: when a sadistic, imperious lord is poised to ascend to the throne, a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to stop him--and his band of over 200 men. Cult director Takashi Miike takes a restrained, classical approach to this story of two traditions struggling for dominance, adding his own perverse touches and staging bravura action sequences--culminating in an extended, stupendously choreographed sword battle.

Pre-screening performances and food begin at 7pm; screening begins at sundown. This film is not suitable for children.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international film festival that takes place every Wednesday evening in July and August. Focusing on a different country or culture each screening, this program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the waterfront breeze, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen. Bobby Sanabria - drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, recording artist, producer, filmmaker, conductor, educator, activist, multi-cultural warrior and multiple Grammy nominee - has performed with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed ensembles. His diverse recording and performing experience includes work with such legendary figures as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo Santamaría, Ray Barretto, Marco Rizo, Arturo Sandoval, Roswell Rudd, Chico O'Farrill, Candido, Yomo Toro, Francisco Aguabella, Larry Harlow, Henry Threadgill, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario Bauzá.

Chico & Rita is a stunning, Oscar-nominated animated feature for adults. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams, while Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey -- in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero -- brings heartache and torment, as they battle impossible odds to unite in music and love. Along the way they meet Chano Pozo, Dizzy Gillespie and travel to three continents in pursuit of their passions. Directed by Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba.
