Help water and care for the dozens of new street trees that have been planted Staten Island!

Join MillionTreesNYC to give trees a little "Tree LC" and stewardship, and help keep New York City green by coming to a free MillionTreesNYC tree care workshop where you will learn:

  • What is MillionTreesNYC?
  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.

Help put your tree care skills to use and join us on a tour of the great trees in northern Staten Island afterwards!

Yearn for adventure? Join the Freshkills Park Staff as we hike areas we are developing into new parkland on Staten Island. This hike will bring you behind the scenes into natural sections of the park typically restricted from public access to introduce you to the beauty of the hills and creeks in Freshkills Park. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the park development while getting out in nature and staying in shape.

Limited space available. Register by email.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape.

Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). This hike includes elevations with gravel and dirt terrain. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water, sunscreen, and a light snack.

Watch a movie in the great outdoors. Join us for our citywide Summer Movie Series featuring family-friendly films through August. Admission is free. Please feel free to bring your own snacks and comfy chairs or blankets, as a limited number of chairs will be available.

Jumanji is a visually elaborate fantasy about an enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a jungle universe. Two young children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), discover the game in an abandoned home and suddenly are greeted by Alan (Robin Williams), an adult who has spent his life trapped inside the game since playing it at age 12. Alan's only hope for freedom involves finishing the game, but this proves rather dangerous, as Judy, Peter, and Alan find themselves running for their lives from huge rhinoceroses, evil monkeys, vicious lions, and other terrifying jungle beasts. Director Joe Johnston, whose special-effects background previously came to good use in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, used groundbreaking computer imagery to simulate the thrills.

Alice Austen’s groundbreaking portfolio “Street Types of New York” from 1894, marks her as one of the earliest female street photographers who captured the changing face of the city’s working class just before the turn of the century. Today a new generation of photographers continues her legacy of documenting the ever-changing city. This exhibition includes work by: Alice Austen, Chris Arnade, Alice Attie, Dmitry Gudkov, Peter Funch, Andy Jones, Wayne Lawrence, Erica McDonald, Greg Miller, Christina Paige, Susanna Ray, Richard Renaldi, Ruddy Roye, Geordie Wood, and AnRong Xu.
The New Street Types draws connections from early street portraiture like that of Alice Austen (1866-1952) to contemporary image-makers. The artists selected for the exhibition work in a similar style to Austen, often employing large format photography to create portraits of New York City’s diverse communities and subcultures – including the outer fringes of the expanding city like the Rockaways and Orchard Beach. Some of the artists conceptualize themes in portrait typologies and use social media to communicate online, while artists like Peter Funch take the traditional street portrait a step further, creating digital tableaus to capture life on the streets and see it anew. Photographer Ruddy Roye utilizes Instagram to create his images - sharing them in a spontaneous and wide-reaching way Austen could have never imagined.
In addition to the contemporary images, Alice Austen’s rare and fascinating “Street Types” portfolio, produced c.1896 by the Albertype Company, will be on display. The show examines Austen’s intentions behind the portfolio of portraits and leaves the viewer to ponder her reasoning for the project – a question that was left unanswered at the time of her death in 1952.
The Alice Austen House is handicapp accessible with a wheelchair ramp in the rear of the house.

Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. Originating in the “Motor Town” of Detroit, Michigan, The Motown Record Corporation fused the style of Soul music with a definitive Pop influence which brought its individual style to the top of the charts in the 1960s and 1970s. The genre is known for its energy and its bounce, and played an important role in racial integration by becoming a crossover success. Popular Motown artists which gave the genre its international popularity include The Temptations, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, The Jackson 5, and the Funk Brothers.

SummerStage presents a night dedicated to Motown's most influential musicians and some of the greatest hits of the Motown decades.

Felix Hernandez is in the business of remembering the good ol’ days. Hernandez’s wildly popular radio show, Rhythm Revue, takes on a life of its own at New York’s Roseland, where three thousand disciples regularly come to hear Fernandez spin the sounds of the past and boogie down. Felix Hernandez will rock the crowd once again at SummerStage again with his mix of soul, Motown, funk, salsa and disco dance classics. Bring your dancing shoes.

The Persuasions, an A Capella group which humbly started out on the street corners of Brooklyn, proudly boast their forty plus years together with only its founding members. Often referred to the undisputed “Kings of A Capella,” this global phenomenon has a heavy influence of Gospel, Soul, with a healthy dose of Pop and has released 26 albums since their beginning in 1962. The group has infused classic songs with their own powerful style, often referred to as “Persuasion-izing it,” to create a new musical experience. Dedicated and new fans alike are inspiration for the members to keep performing for over half a century.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

My Grandfathers Circus

"My grandfather grew up in South Dakota during the great depression. This fifty-five minute show is based on his stories and how he had fun during a very adverse time creating a circus out of the dust bowl. Every day farm objects come to life and find excitement in unexpected places. This show was written for children in the Gulf Region post hurricane Katrina and has been performed at the White House, the National Storytelling Convention, and for the Mass MoCA museum. Circus arts performed in this show include and are not limited to juggling, slack rope walking, prop manipulation, unicycle, and many more."

Imagine having the greatest time on the dance floor, you feel like a superstar, the DJ is spinning your favorite songs, the room is full, and you’re with your best friends—your family. Little Club Heads revolutionized the idea of “family time” by providing a dance party experience for children aged 12 months to 10 years old and their parents. At our events, parents can socialize with each other while children have an opportunity to mingle, dance, and stay fit. After over 100 events and entertaining thousands of guests over the past 4 years, Little Club Heads is excited to bring it's high energy party to Summer Stage Kids.
