Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and folk music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop. Since beginning his recording career in1997 he has released 11 albums and played thousands of shows. Bird has gone on to record with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and festivals worldwide. Recently Bird composed his first ever film score for the movie Norman (hailed as “a probing, thoughtful score” by The New York Times), contributed to the soundtrack of The Muppets and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that debuted at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and exhibited at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2012, he released two albums, Break It Yourself, and Hands of Glory, an acoustic companion album. He’s recently been performing with Tift Merritt, developing a children’s TV show, and writing for his next album.

Originally from Cape Anne, Massachusetts, Luke Temple moved to the North West, sleeping rough in the woods, working in a candy store and as a janitor at a suburban mall. All of his aimlessness lasted a year and half. He enrolled in school of the Museum of Fine Arts and spent five years painting portraits, after which Luke moved to New York. As painting drifted from the foreground, songs started to emerge. After recording two critically acclaimed albums to little commercial reception, Luke was at the point of quitting a career in music. In 2008, feeling free in his new state, he made what would become the first Here We Go Magic album, forming the band and releasing the self-titled debut in 2009. Luke kept busy touring and recording two more full lengths and an EP. Since Here We Go Magic's 2012 release, the Nigel Gordich-produced “A Different Ship,” Luke has returned to his original solo ideas.

The Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) – described by the NY Times as the "Sundance of Latin music" -- celebrates its 15th anniversary and yet another year of collaboration with Summerstage for an exciting series of concerts featuring both classic and cutting-edge music from across the Americas.

The legendary Beatnuts are a groundbreaking rap group that emerged from Queens, New York in the late 80s and made hip-hop history with classic collaborations with Biz Markie, Fat Joe and Method Man. The Beatnuts, which includes Ju-Ju (of Dominican descent) and Psycho Les (of Colombian descent), have paved the way for new generations of Latin artists as the only Latin members of the infamous Native Tongues collective. Known for their classic hits “No Escapin This,” “Off The Books,” and “Watch Out Now” (which was later sampled by Jennifer Lopez for her radio hit "Jenny from the Block"), The Beatnuts have earned a stellar reputation for energetic live shows that showcase their diverse talents as MCs, DJs and producers.

One of the most respected MCs in any language, Ana Tijoux is set to explode with her brand new record La Bala (the bullet), the follow up to her Grammy-nominated album, 1977. Born in France—where her parents were exiled during the military dictatorship in their native Chile—Tijoux became a household name in Chile with her first band, Makiza, as well as voicing the main character in the popular animated series Los Pulentos. After going solo, she quickly gained fame throughout Latin America with a string of hits including the smash “Eres Para Mi” with Julieta Venegas. But the world really began to take notice when she dropped 1977, an album full of classic beats and her signature flow that harkened back to the 90s and the golden age of intellectual hip-hop. International accolades soon followed, with praise from mainstream press around the globe as well as tastemakers like Thom Yorke, and the album ended up at the top of the “Best-of” lists of Amazon, Billboard, and iTunes, amongst others. Now she’s back with La Bala, a continuation in sound and spirit from this global activist and MC. Collaborations with the Oscar and Grammy winner Jorge Drexler, as well as Cuba’s hip-hop stars Los Aldeanos, are just some of the highlights of the album. In concert Tijoux now takes the stage with her full band to flesh out the intricate arrangements of the new album. Her shows are a whirlwind trip through hip-hop, jazz, and funk, spiced up with a bit of politics and her great sense of humor that has made audiences around the globe fall in love with her.

Spanish Harlem native, Nathaniel De La Rosa publicly known as Bodega Bamz aka PAPI is taking the New York hip-hop music scene by storm. By infusing his rich Latino roots with his urban lyricism, Bamz has created his own sub genre known as Latin Trap. Born of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, his culture has always played a large role in his musical inspiration. From Hector Lavoe to Tupac, Bamz has mastered the art of incorporating Caribbean sounds and raw emotion filled lyrics. His stage name alone is symbolic of his drive and deep connection to his heritage, the name Bodega comes from the concept of "bodegas" or corner stores being pinnacle aspects to Latino communities, and Bamz is an acronym for “By Any MeanZ,” and in his case he plans to provide a variety of quality music by any means necessary. Although he is a fresh face to most listeners, Bamz has been rapping for over a decade. With the help of his younger brother, and engineer, Obed "Ohla" De La Rosa, Bamz mixtape Strictly 4 My P.A.P.I.Z (Proud and Powerful Individualz) created an instant buzz online. Bodega Bamz has exhibited a great amount of versatility, not only is he paving the way for Latinos, but he is earning his way into hip-hop history.

Tony Touch A.K.A Tony Toca, began as a B-Boy during the rap music renaissance era of the early 80’s, and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. From his legendary mix tapes, to his skills on the 1’s and 2’s, he has become one of Hip Hop’s most recognized DJ’s and is known in the streets and industry as the real ‘Mix tape King’. This C.E.O/Artist/Producer recently dropped his 7th commercial release, and over the years has worked with everyone from Nina Sky to Snoop Dogg, and Tego Calderon to KRS One. Touch is a champion for the Latino community, as well as a global icon, having toured in over 30 countries. You can catch Tony on his weekly radio shows, for more info check www.tonytouch.com.

2014 marks Hudson River Park’s RiverRocks 16th Season. RiverRocks is among New York City’s quintessential free outdoor summer concert series and features established and breaking artists performing at the beautiful Pier 84.

Wild Beasts Friends since teenagers, the group created intense electronic sounds inspired by the 80s and 90s, retooled with an eye for the 21st century. The recent album, Present Tense, was released to much acclaim.

Mutual Benefit Jordan Lee leads the amorphous project that is at once a one-man-band or a sprawling collective, depending on where he is and who is around that day - resulting in lush, watery, pop songs filled with kinetic energy.

Domingo Quiñones is a salsa singer, composer, producer and actor. Born on August 9, 1963 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Quiñones moved to Puerto Rico with his parents when he was four years old, later returning to New York City in 1977. He began his career there six years later with the Conjunto Nativo. He also performed with other groups, including the orchestra of Rafael de Jesús, with José Alberto “El Canario”, with Johnny Rodriguez and the Conjunto Clásico. In 1985 he replaced Roberto Lugo in the orchestra of Luis “Perico” Ortiz with whom he recorded four albums, including La vida en broma (1985), In Tradition (1986) and Perico (1987). He then sang for a time with Louie Ramirez and Roberto Roena. In 1990, he signed as a solo artist with RMM and released his first solo album: Domingo es mi nombre. After joining Tito Puente on his 100th record, Quiñones released his second solo album Pintando Lunas. That album included a duet entitled “Dos Amigos” with Tony Vega and a salsa version of the song “Crazy for You” which proved his great versatility. This was followed by six additional recordings with RMM, including one of his most important productions: “Se necesita un milagro”, selected as one of the most influential albums by the National Foundation for Popular Culture of Puerto Rico. Among his many popular songs was “Mi Negrita Me Espera”.

Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his significant powers. His 2010 album ‘Black Sands’ was the high watermark of his career to date; a masterful record, marrying Green’s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums. Black Sands went on to sell over 160,000 copies worldwide, and since its release, Bonobo has toured the world with his live band, wowing audiences of thousands at a time with the hypnotic, extended live versions of the album’s tracks. ‘The North Borders’ is another long stride forward - both a natural evolution and a continuation of the electronic palette of Black Sands. Thematic, resonant, addictive and perfectly formed, it’s a thrillingly coherent statement piece. With vocal features from no less than Erykah Badu, as well as Grey Reverend (Cinematic Orchestra) and Cornelia (Portico Quartet) it’s another finely balanced body of work, leaving room for the beautiful, rich productions themselves to breathe and shine.

If anyone ever doubts whether New York City has what It takes to continue being an electric hub of culture and art they need look no further than The band Cibo Matto. Spanning two generations of indie royalty, playing with the Beastie Boys in the 90s, John Zorn in the 2000s and now having Weezer open up for them in Los Angeles in 2014 (Rivers Cuomo learned all his songs in Japanese), this band not only stands the test of time, they are a cornerstone of this city's vitality and relevance. Although no one can forget their debut LP, Viva La Woman, their new album Hotel Valentine makes you feel like you're discovering this innovative duo for the first time! This is the very antithesis of a one hit wonder, the band is without a doubt better than ever! And for those who were lucky enough to see them the first time around, you'll have bragging points when they bring down SummerStage in Central Park. This is a show not to be missed. The buildings will be turning into coconut trees, and you might be feeling a bit of, 'Deja Vu,' make sure to bring plenty of 'Sugar Water.'

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

Ismael Miranda aka "El niño bonito de la Salsa" (The pretty boy of Salsa) always wanted to be a musician, and by age 11 had already formed two groups, "The 4J's and Little Junior" and "The Class Mates". He sang and played conga for the group and they were good enough to appear on Jerry Lewis' Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Miranda also grew up and played in his first bands with Jazz percussionist Orlando "Q" Rodríguez and piano player Mark Diamond. In 1967, when Miranda was 17 years old, he made his recording debut and made such an impression on bandleader Larry Harlow, that he was hired as Larry's lead singer. He later joined the Fania All Stars and went with this band on tour to Europe, Asia and Latin America. In 1973, he formed his own band called "Orquesta Revelación" and recorded "Así se compone un son" under the Fania record label. With this song, Miranda entered the new salsa craze which was sweeping the nation and was then baptized as "El Niño Bonito de la Salsa" ( 'The Pretty Boy of Salsa"). He went on to launch his own record label "IM Records" and continues to perform nationally to this day.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: J. Holiday / Jon B in association with WBLS]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/16/summerstage-j-holiday http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/16/summerstage-j-holiday Date: July 16, 2014

Laid-back Washington, D.C.-based R&B vocalist J. Holiday brings an unexpected edge to R&B music. He bears a street sensibility and bravado normally reserved for hip-hop but remains inspired by groups such as Boyz II Men and Jodeci. His first release, the hit single “Be with Me” was the prelude to the full-length debut album, Back of My Lac' . The album became a major success due to singles like “Bed” and “Suffocate,” both of which topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Holiday’s second album, the more romantic Round 2, shows audiences a softer side with tracks that are reminiscent of early 70’s soul.

Jon B is an accomplished musician, noted songwriter and producer who combined 1970s Soul with Hip-Hop influences in his debut album, Bonafide. A soulful album that highlighted his dulcet tenor, it earned him both critical and commercial success, especially with the GRAMMY nominated song “Someone to Love” featuring Babyface. Jon B’s success continued with his platinum album Cool Relax, fueled by the success of “They Don’t Know,” which topped the R&B charts. In the album Stronger Everyday, Jon experimented with sounds and textures to accompany his vocals that gave his music a deeper, mature vibe. Hopeless Romantic, showcased his songwriting skills, featuring the single “Ooh So Sexy” with Paul Wall. In 2011, Jon B released Comfortable Swagg, which celebrates his journey as a family man.

In the past year the world lost both folk legend Pete Seeger and his wife of seventy years, Toshi. The Hudson River Park is proud to present the opening night of Seeger Fest, a FREE five-day event honoring the lives and legacies of Pete and Toshi Seeger through music, film and community events.

The opening night will be a screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary, Pete Seeger: The Power of Song that follows Mr. Seeger’s life as a musician and activist. The film includes interviews with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Arlo Guthrie and many others. Before the screening there will be a short concert featuring The Chapin Sisters with special guests Adira & Alana Amram, Aurora Barnes and Kristen Graves, skilled singer-songwriters who bring their own style and voice to the stage. They frequently collaborate with their father Tom Chapin and are inspired by their late uncle Harry Chapin who, like Pete, used music as a tool for social change.

After the music and before the screening, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, Pete Seeger’s grandson and associate producer of Pete Seeger: The Power of Song will briefly talk about the film and answer a few questions from the audience.

Please go to www.SeegerFest.org to learn about the additional Seeger Fest events which include a July 20th concert at Lincoln Center Out of Doors and a July 21st concert at SummerStage in Central Park.

Hip hop, Indie-rock, punk and folk artists committed to social change will come together to honor musician and activist Pete Seeger. The program’s hosts are Gina Belafonte, Harry Belafonte’s daughter and Kitama Jackson, Pete Seeger’s grandson.

Mr. Seeger and Mr. Belafonte became international household names as singers who stood for change. For Belafonte that meant being involved in both the Civil Rights Movement in US and the Anti-Apatheid movement in South Africa. For Seeger that meant getting people singing, and then using song to lead marches and rallies around the world. From the labor movement to the Civil Rights movement to the environmental movement, Pete Seeger was always on the front lines.

Today’s artists aren’t that different from Seeger and Belafonte, they also use music as a means to give voice to the voiceless and inspire people to change the world for themselves, their communities and future generations.

Anti-Flag have been spreading their message of unity to the masses for two decades. Through the years, they’ve gone from non-stop tours crisscrossing North America in a dilapidated van to world tours spanning five continents. From humble beginnings in the Steel Town, Anti-Flag has worked hard to use music as a force for positive change. They are advocates for worker and human rights, environmentalism, animal rights, healthcare, conscientious objectors, prison reform and freedom for political prisoners, equality and peace. Last year Anti-Flag celebrated 20 years as a band. The band joined forces with Art For Amnesty to release an electrifying version of “Toast To Freedom,” the now-classic commemorative song written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International. The track — inspired by the imprisonment of Russian activist punk band Pussy Riot and benefiting human rights organization Amnesty International – was recorded at the legendary Hansa Studio in Berlin, Germany, and features Donots, Ian D’Sa of Billy Talent, and Bernd of Beatsteaks. Anti-Flag’s music and message is a call to action for people of all backgrounds and beliefs to focus on making tomorrow a better place for all. As Anti-Flag celebrates 20 years, they carry the torch forward putting emphasis of the band and every show played on community.

The Chapin Sisters, Lily & Abigail Chapin are known for pristine harmonies and haunting melodies. They’ve been compared to sister acts of old and Appalachian family groups, yet their original songs and arrangements have a very contemporary aspect, with elements of pop, blues, folk, and even psychedelic rock. Abigail and Lily were born in Brooklyn New York. They couldn’t help but pick up a thorough grounding in traditional American roots music and folk-rock from their father, 3-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Tom Chapin. He, along with their grandfather Jim Chapin, a jazz drummer, and their uncle, singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, created an environment wherein music held an almost sacred purpose, of bringing people together, whether it be for family, humanitarian purposes, or joyful release. When the family relocated to New York’s Hudson Valley, the girls attended a Waldorf school whose arts-based education added training in orchestral music and the complicated harmonies of Shape-note songs and old English folk ballads. Through elementary and high school they sang on over a dozen studio albums. With two critically-acclaimed full-length albums under their belt, 2008’s Lake Bottom LP and 2010’s Two, Abigail and Lily released A Date with the Everly Brothers in the Spring of 2013. Recorded in one day, live in the studio with a full band in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the album includes 14 of the sisters’ favorite Everlys songs, a tribute as well as a master class in harmony singing. The album was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, The New York Times’ T magazine, and included on many year-end top 10 lists. The Chapin Sisters are currently working on their next album.

Fronted by MC’s Rodstarz, and MC/Producer G1, Rebel Diaz shows us the true global power of Hip-Hop. After first performing at an immigrant rights march in New York City in 2006 in front of a half million people, the bilingual crew has taken the international community by storm with their explosive live shows. With influences ranging from Chicago house to South American folk, Rebel Diaz combines classic boom bap tradition with Hip-Hop’s global impact. The group’s versatility has allowed for them to share the stage with the likes of Common, Mos Def, and Public Enemy, while feeling right at home with acts like Rage Against the Machine and Calle 13. Multiple tours throughout Europe and Latin America have only solidified their international appeal. With roots in Chicago, and now based in the South Bronx, Rebel Diaz has also piqued the interest of the academic community with their poignant social commentary and energetic performances. They have spent the last 8 years visiting dozens of colleges and universities, facilitating workshops, speaking on panels, and performing at national conferences. Building on this growing network of positive young people in Hip-Hop, the group opened a community arts center in the South Bronx in 2008, the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective (RDACBX). On the heels of their critically acclaimed Otro Guerrillero mixtape series, and 2011′s #Occupy The Airwaves mixtape, Rebel Diaz released their debut album, The Radical Dilemma, in December 2013.

A protégé of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Steve Earle quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one on the country charts and immediately established the term “New Country.” What followed was an extremely exciting and varied array of releases including the biting hard rock of Copperhead Road (1988), the minimalist beauty of Train A Comin’ (1995), the politically charged masterpiece, Jerusalem (2002) and the Grammy Award Winning albums The Revolution Starts…Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007) and Townes (2009). I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (2011) is Steve Earle’s 14th Studio Album and shares the same name with his 2011 debut novel. Of the novel, Patti Smith stated, “Steve Earle brings to his prose the same authenticity, poetic spirit and cinematic energy he projects in his music. I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is like a dream you can’t shake, offering beauty and remorse, redemption in spades.”

Nearly a decade after folk-rock duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion put out their first album together, the husband-and-wife pair feel like they’ve finally hit their stride on Wassaic Way, a collection of 11 new songs to be released August 6th on Rte 8 Records. Produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone at the Loft in Chicago, Wassaic Way finds Guthrie and Irion pushing further beyond the folky sound they established on 2005’s Exploration, their first studio LP. Any of the songs on Wassaic Way could be a single, which speaks to the strength of the songwriting, and also to Guthrie and Irion’s underlying goal: they wanted an album that moves them one step closer to getting at the heart of who they are as writers and performers.“Every record has been a huge learning curve, and you get pushed beyond your limits, and then your limits are way bigger,” Guthrie says. “I think we’re still at the beginning of what we can do as recording artists. I think we’re just starting to carve a path that we can walk on.”

James Maddock affirms his status as a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene with the release of Another Life, his latest album on Jullian Records. Nodding to ‘70s rock with shimmering acoustic guitars, an understated rhythm section and flourishes of fiddle, mandolin, piano and dobro, Another Life bridges the mainstream appeal of songwriters like Jesse Harris and Norah Jones and the quirkier sensibility of Loudon Wainwright. With funding entirely from fan contributions through PledgeMusic, Maddock worked with producer Matt Pierson, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (who’s played with Bob Dylan and Levon Helm) and bassist Tony Scherr (who plays with Norah Jones). After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood, whose debut Songs From Stamford Hill was featured prominently on TV shows such as “Dawson’s Creek,” Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album, while follow-up Wake Up And Dream ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's Listener Poll. He has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). According to radio legend Vin Scelsa, Maddock's "heartbreakingly beautiful and exquisitely crafted" music "touches the soul." Maddock is a constant live presence in the U.S. and Europe.

After thousands of concerts across tens-of-thousands of miles, Ruth Ungar & Mike Merenda have emerged as one of acoustic America’s most revered musical duos. As story-tellers, as singers, as poets and as parents (they tour with their two small children), Mike + Ruthy are heralds of an American cultural awakening that values honesty and togetherness, prefers grit to glitz, and revels in the old-fashioned telling of a story. Described as “rich, vintage Americana” by Time Out NY, Mike + Ruthy’s 2012 Woody Guthrie collaboration “My New York City” is being hailed as one of the most gorgeous pieces ever to have come out of the archive. Mike + Ruthy can hold an intimate audience in the palm of their hands, and then when it's festival season it's time to crank it up a notch and expand the band. An Americana mix of bass, drums and pedal steel add swirl and stomp, making their set even more powerful, and fun for the big stage. A beautiful, live, duo record and a fresh, full-band, studio album are currently in the works for release in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Song writer and award winning Poet Nyraine Santiago better known as Nyraine is a poetic genius born and raised in Harlem. From his earliest years since the age of seven he would spend countless hours writing poems, paraphrasing and memorizing stanzas which eventually led to birthing his own creative talents. Nyraine’s first musical forays began at the early age of 11. He became a featured vocalist with the New York Boys Choir with whom he toured with throughout the United States and Internationally. Nyraine performed with legends such as Diana Ross , Michael Bolton and in 1995 was invited to Japan to sing for Pope John Paul III. A very influential point in his early performance life would be when Nyraine and the Boy's Choir sang alongside Coolio in the live telecast performance of “Gangsta’s Paradise” along with the Legendary Stevie Wonder and LV in Radio City Music Hall at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards. Nyraine has a way of drawing you into his mind and soul with his words which not many can do. It’s the combination of the vibrations, frequency of his vocals and his deep over standing of the words he speaks. Some of his current accomplishments include: wining the 2012 Underground Music Awards Lyricist of the year title, featured articles in the XXL Magazine and Hip Hop Weekly. He is the next great MCee .

Provocative, irreverent, controversial and wildly creative, Amanda Palmer is a fearless singer, songwriter, playwright, blogger and an audaciously expressive pianist who simultaneously embraces – and explodes – traditional frameworks of music, theater and art. Amanda first came to prominence as one half of the internationally acclaimed punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. In 2008, she released her debut solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, produced by Ben Folds and accompanied by a fine art photography book featuring text by esteemed author Neil Gaiman (who Palmer has since married). Amanda is widely known as “The Social Media Queen of Rock-N-Roll” for her constant and disarmingly intimate engagement with her fans via her blog, Tumblr, and Twitter, and has been at the vanguard of using both “direct to fan” and “pay what you want” business models to build and run her business. In May of 2012 she made international news when she raised nearly $1.2 million pre-selling her new album, Theatre is Evil via Kickstarter. Theatre is Evil went on to debut in the “Billboard Top 10” when it was released on Sept. 11, 2012, and has been released in over 20 countries on her own label, 8ft records. Amanda was invited to present a “TED Talk” at TED’s 2013 Conference. To date her Talk, “The Art of Asking”, has been viewed more than 4 million times worldwide. 2013 also saw the release of “An Evening with Neil Gaiman & Amanda Palmer”- a 3 CD collection of tracks culled from a live tour with her husband and best-selling author Neil Gaiman.

Rusted Root, the multi-platinum sextet out of Pittsburgh, evolved around front-man Michael Glabicki’s distinct sound and grew into a musical entity that has thrived in a non-genre specific category all its own. In addition to the two decades with Rusted Root, Glabicki is exploring new sounds and opening new doors with his solo carrer. He has started touring nationally as a trio act, and explains that although he has his roots with Rusted Root, the sound is very different. Glabicki has always invited the audience to participate in the creation of Rusted Root’s music. He frequently tests new songs on the road to see the fan reaction. Constantly writing new material, Glabicki finds that some of it fits his solo sound better than Rusted Root’s. He currently routes his solo tours around the Rusted Root schedule, and has multiple performances throughout the year. While not on tour with Rusted Root or working on his solo career, Glabicki also has started his own studio, Red Cloud in Pittsburgh. What started as a place for him to write and record new songs, has now grown into a full scale studio where local musicians can rent space to work on their new albums. A multifaceted musician, producer and songwriter, Glabicki’s talents are unique and extremely uplifting. His solo tour dates and new music are extensions of his creative talent, and will inspire all those who participate.

Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc is credited with originating hip hop music. He first began to spin records in the recreation room of his Bronx building in the 1970's, isolating and mixing together breaks from different songs and forming the basis of what the world has come to know as Hip-Hop.

Chronixx was the ‘stage’ name his friends bestowed on him, replacing the name ‘Little Chronicle’ he was given as the ‘junior’ to his father, the artist Chronicle. He was born October 10, 1992 and was named Jamar Rolando McNaughton. His father, a musician, recognized his talents and nurtured him in an environment in which he could grow into whatever area of music he chose. Always accompanying him to the studio, Jamar grew up around the likes of Burro Banton, Norris Man and the legendary Gregory Isaacs. With a big smile and an engaging personality, he confidently set out to make his mark in music, by writing his first song ‘Rice Grain’ by the age of five and going on to be choir director and worship leader at 11. At 14 years, he started producing and ‘building riddims’ for artistes such as Konshens and Munga Honorable and composing riddims such as the ‘Freezer Riddim’ for Icebox Records and voicing artistes such as, Popcaan for Maverick Records. Today, Chronixx credits his versatility and his professional stage presence to the early lessons he received from his father Chronicle, who always shared his own experiences and encouraged his son to go one step beyond with each performance. Chronixx is not disappointing his father, his family or his friends who know that the ‘sky is the limit’ for this young man who sees ‘music as his mission.’

A Kingston, Jamaican native, Delroy "Junior" Reid spent his youth in the city's Waterhouse district, notorious for being one of the most dangerous places in Jamaica. It was there in the politically turbulent late '70s, that he recorded his first-ever single "Speak the Truth" at the age 13, taking his first step towards becoming an internationally known reggae and dancehall artist. Reid joined the first ever Grammy Awards Winning Reggae group, Black Uhuru, as lead singer in 1986 where his work on the album Brutal earned him a Grammy-nomination. However, Junior's interest in producing material for himself, and desire to regain his domestic popularity, drove him into the solo arena and into his own studio where in 1989, "One Blood" saw him re-established at the forefront of the reggae scene. Today, Reid is a frequent collaborator and often sampled artist in today's hip-hop scene, including contributing his voice to Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, as well as working with the Wu-Tang Clan, Guru, The Game, M.I.M.S. and many more.

New York City’s Rice and Peas is a movement whose high energy party environment is home to a loyal following of creative influencers, artists, musicians, dancers and all around beautiful people. Since its inception in 2007, Rice and Peas has been bringing diverse groups of people together in a uniquely curated environment where dancehall and Caribbean culture meet downtown. A who’s who of reggae’s biggest stars like Wayne Wonder, Gyptian and Shaggy have called on Rice and Peas to do their exclusive release parties. Jamaica’s heavyweights Beenie Man, Mr. Vegas, Chronixx (and too many more to mention) have given impromptu performances— even multi-platinum artists like Sean Paul and Damian Marley party at Rice and Peas. Federation Sound’s own Max Glazer, LargeUp founder DJ Gravy, and the silent killer Orijahnal Vibez handle DJ duties while the ladies’ favorite East Flatbush badman, Micro Don, narrates the experience with raw energy, humorous ad-libs and infinite star power.

The Rock Steady Crew was established in 1977 by Bronx b-boys Jimmy D and Jimmy Lee. When they started this crew in the streets of the Bronx, they had no idea that someday it would take them all around the world. Only the best b-boys were down with Rock Steady. They had rivals in all five boroughs of New York and for every rival there were ten kids who wanted to be down with them. However, getting into the original crew was not easy. To get into Rock Steady you had to battle one of the other b-boys in the crew. It was a competition few people won.

In 1979 when the b-boying hype was beginning to die down, Jimmy D put Crazy Legs and Lenny Len down with Rock Steady just in time to add new life to the art form and take it to the next level. This was at a time when Crazy Legs moved to Manhattan. Going back to the Bronx every weekend became too difficult for Crazy Legs pockets. He then started to explore the Hip Hop scene in Manhattan more often. This meant losing touch with other members of Rock Steady. Crazy Legs would spend most of his time developing his craft in tenement building hallways and battling b-boys that he would come across and eventually hanging out with the ones that he felt had an original style. Born to Jamaican parents in South Wimbledon, London, on January 14, 1965, Slick Rick, born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, who has always been considered ahead of his time, is the most successful British-American rapper in music history. Brilliant word play, the effort-less ability to bring life to the stories he rhymed about, dead on pop-culture references and hilarious one-liners make him the wittiest rapper of all time.

He immigrated with his family to the Bronx in the mid 1970s and attended the La Guardia High School of Music & Art, where he became friends with future rapper Dana Dane. Rick began to gravitate towards the makeshift music of the streets. The two formed the Kangol Crew, and began performing in hip-hop battles around the city. At one 1984 battle in the Bronx, Rick met Doug E. Fresh, and began playing with his Get Fresh Crew. In the summer of 1985, the duo released their historic singles, “The Show and La Di Da Di.” Fresh’s beatbox and Rick’s smooth lyrical delivery turned rap music on its head and MC Ricky D. — as Rick was known then — leaped to a solo contract two years later, after being hounded by Russell Simmons and Lyor Cohen. Rick became the 3rd artist signed to Def Jam Records, the biggest label in hip-hop at the time. Before long, Rick would establish himself as one of the architects of hip-hop.

M.O.P., short for Mash Out Posse, is an American hip hop duo. The duo, composed of rappers Billy Danze and Lil' Fame, is known for their aggressive lyrical delivery style.[1][2] Although they maintain a strong underground following, they are mainly known for the song "Ante Up," released on 2000's Warriorz, and with which they have had mainstream success.[1][2] The group has frequently collaborated with DJ Premier. Fame sometimes produces under the moniker Fizzy Womack, and has produced a significant number of tracks on all M.O.P. releases since 1996's Firing Squad, as well as work for other artists including Big Noyd, Kool G Rap, Teflon and Wu-Tang Clan.

Consisting of Skoob and Krazy Drayzy, Das EFX has been around the music game for a long time. The duo gained critical and commercial fame with the release of their landmark debut album, Dead Serious, which highlighted their unusual rapping style which they nicknamed "sewage". Dead Serious went platinum and its lead single, "They Want EFX," reached the top ten on Billboard Magazine’s R&B chart, the top 40 on its Hot 100 Singles chart and #1 on its Hot Rap Tracks chart. Das EFX returned in 1998 with the album Generation EFX and followed up in 2003 with the album How We Do. The duo is currently working on a new album.

In the past two years, Ingrid Michaelson -- who'll drop her fifth studio album, "Lights Out" (Cabin 24/Mom+Pop) on April 15 -- has vaulted from overachieving indie-pop sweetheart to a bona-fide pop star. Her last release, "Human Again," debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard album chart (plus No.1 on iTunes). This achievement merely crowned the considerable success Ingrid had already earned with her previous compositions: beautiful, idiosyncratic songs that have been prominently featured in popular films, television and on regular rotation in commercials. Her DIY approach to making music -- composing her own songs, co-releasing albums on her Cabin 24 imprint, building an organic following through music-licensing, and back in her MySpace days (where she was discovered in 2006), promoting herself -- was a slam-dunk. Now, it had evolved into a well-oiled machine, The New York Times even weighed in, declaring her songwriting "smart," her tunes "irresistible" and her live show "seamless." Then, says Ingrid, "Everything just came to a screeching halt." While helping out seriously ill relatives, her dog died. Soon after, Ingrid herself fell sick with serious stomach issues. "My whole throat was on fire for a few months. I had to stop writing," she says, of the time between April and August 2013. "I was so ill, I couldn't sing." After seeing countless doctors -- "like, three a day" at its worst -- she got better and was able to resume writing "Lights Out." For someone associated with crafting sunny tunes about escapism, a creative detour into dusk seemed almost inevitable. Technically, "Lights Out" refers to the two words uttered on Ingrid's tour bus when everyone's ready to call it a night. But given recent developments, it's become a metaphor for contemplating mortality and letting go -- themes more thoughtful than they are dark. The album builds into intensity, but is anchored by the swelling pop-affirmation "Time Machine" and the sweetly buoyant "Girls Chase Boys," which fits squarely into her existing catalog. "We thought of that song as the bridge for people. I'm still respecting what people want, but showing them what I can do," she explains, adding: "Some of the songs, like 'Over You,' are written to sound like relationship-y songs, but they're not." The ethereal "Handsome Hands" is arguably "Lights Out"'s most left-of-center offering. "The song is about death, but it's also about the higher power," she explains. "In moments of desperation, even the most non-religious people pray. When you're pushed to your limits, you look for help from something other than yourself." Similarly, "Wonderful Unknown" is a positive, if beguiling narrative about the fears and uncertainties of growing old with your spouse, which she delivers in a lower register. An after-effect of her illness? "I don't think I've lost part of my voice," she explains, "but my voice has somewhat changed." Perhaps more dauntingly, "Lights Out" also marks Ingrid's entry into a brave new world of songwriting. Recorded in New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville, the album features six producers and ten co-writers, including singer-songwriters Katie Herzig and Trent Dabbs, as well as the very in-demand Busbee (Pink, Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum). "With every other record, I've always written all of the songs. I've worked with one producer. And we've stayed in one room," she says. "I've been such a control freak about my songs! But if you can get with the right person, there are ideas you could never come up with. It totally opens doors." And with opportunity comes meaningful change. "It's funny. It doesn't even feel like I wrote 'The Way I Am,'" Ingrid says of her platinum break-out single, recorded seven year ago. "It's a memory." She'll continue to perform it live as she tours "Lights Out" -- just stripped-down, recasting the flittering ditty into something weightier. "It feels like a little girl wrote that song. So much has happened to me in life."

NEULORE was formed in Nashville, TN in the Autumn of 2009 to tell stories of hope. After releasing a well-crafted EP, "Apples & Eve", they have begun to take their heartfelt songs to the masses. With a live show that not only entertains, but affects, leaving the audience with a sense that anything is possible, Neulore is captivating the hearts of all who draw near. Describing their sound as "truth in modern tones" and boldly stating that "the new folk music has arrived" they are firmly rooted in the tradition of community, the pursuit of wisdom, and the telling of timeless stories from a fresh perspective.

Secret Someones is the new project from NYC singer/songwriters Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard, Hannah Winkler & drummer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Jones. Drawing inspiration from bands like Weezer, Talking Heads, and the entire Tom Petty catalog, the band is pure songwriting excellence. Loud, fun, and catchy as hell, Secret Someones are collectively bringing it, and they're just getting started.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Lisette Melendez / Coro / George Lamond / hosted by Mick Benzo in association with Universal Zulu Nation and the 40th anniversary of Hip-Hop culture]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/30/summerstage-lisette-melendez-coro-george-lamond- http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/30/summerstage-lisette-melendez-coro-george-lamond- Date: July 30, 2014

Lisette Melendez is an American freestyle/Latin pop/dance-pop singer. Her debut album Together Forever was propelled to gold status after her smash hits "Together Forever" and "A Day In My Life (Without You)" both sold over 700,000 copies in 1991. Both songs were such big dance music hits that they are credited as helping renew interest in Freestyle music in the early 90s, which had been fading in popularity due to the rise of mainstream pop music and grunge at the time. Melendez was born and raised in East Harlem. Melendez' childhood inspirations include her mother and aunt, who sang in a church choir and community theater. As a teenager she honed her singing voice by emulating Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. In high school she became a fan of Puerto Rican freestyle music singer Lisa Lisa who had many dance hits. Melendez, also of Puerto Rican descent, was inspired by Lisa Lisa's success. In 2008 Lisette teamed up with famed music producer Carlos "After Dark" Berrios and performed two new tracks "I Need a Lover" and "Don't Ever Say" on albums Don't Look Back Sessions One &Two.

Coro is a Latin freestyle singer and actor of Cuban and Dominican heritage, who first had roles in numerous episodes of the star's hit television series, Miami Vice. While appearing on Vice, Coro struggled to put together a group to get his singing career off the ground. His first efforts never took off, but in 1987, Coro met Stevie B, who was enjoying the success of his first hit record and getting ready to tour. After a stint as a backup vocalist and dancer for Stevie B, the New York-born and Miami-raised Coro made the move back to his native Manhattan to initiate a solo singing career. Coro partnered with freestyle music producers Zahid Tariq and Todd Terry in 1989,. Coro's first single, "Where Are You Tonight", became the #1 dance record in New York and Florida. The song reached the Top 25 on Billboard 's club chart and put Coro on the road doing shows in dance clubs across the country. On his self-titled debut album, Coro collaborated with producers Zahid Tariq and Ziggy Gonzalez to create a selection of up-tempo dance tunes like "Can't Let You Go", "Where Are You tonight", "My Fallen Angel" and ballads such as "Missing You".

George Lamond began singing backup for various artists before landing a solo deal with Columbia Records. Lamond is known for his lyrical spinto tenor vocal quality, not found in most tenors of today. His first album, Bad of the Heart, released in 1990, had underground dance hits like "Bad of the Heart", "Look Into My Eyes" and "Without You". Lamond has also released a couple of salsa albums and scored a number of hits on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. 2001 saw the release of his highly acclaimed salsa album GL on Sony Records, and in 2006, Lamond returned with the release of his album Oye Mi Canto, bringing a new sound to his music career. The album was a combination of reggaeton, bachata and salsa, with seven songs produced by G1E Productions. In 2008, Lamond released a new single, "What is Love", on an album titled Don't Look Back - Session 2 produced by famed freestyle producer, Carlos "After Dark" Berrios, and a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin", released on Robbins Entertainment and produced by Giuseppe D. Lamond is featured on the Lucas Prata cover of Level 42's "Something About You", found on Prata's Never Stop Dreamin' album, also produced by Giuseppe D.

Joe Bataan, the “King of Latin Soul,” helped coin the phrase "Salsoul" in 1974 lending the name to his first album. Bataan was influenced by two musical styles: the Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop. Bataan recorded three albums and several singles for Salsoul Records and the Latin subdivision of Salsoul Records, Salsoul Leyendas. Titles include SalSoul, Rap-O-Clap-O, Joe Bataan II, Afrofilipino and a new compilation of his greatest hits titled Tropical Classics: Joe Bataan, which features the early 1979 hip-hop hit "Rap-O-Clap-O” and additional classic titles he performed for the Salsoul Leyendas label.

For the 11-piece Boogaloo Assassins the mission is simple: bring la gente a funky good time, Latin-soul style. Formed in Los Angeles in 2007, Boogaloo Assassins are the West Coast’s answer to New York City’s Latin music explosion of the late 1960s. Heavily indebted to the classic sounds of Spanish Harlem, Los Asesinos serve up their own late 1960’s-style salsa and “Latin Boogaloo”, best described as a raucous fusion of American R&B with Afro-Cuban rhythms, sung in both English and Spanish. Known throughout the West for their high-energy live shows, Boogaloo Assassins' debut recording "Old Love Dies Hard" features their hit single "No No No", a salsa version of the blues/reggae classic, featured on Gilles Peterson's BBC-1, Los Angeles's leading public radio station KCRW, and many others. As of Spring 2014, Boogaloo Assassins have hit both the road and the recording studio with new rock'n'roll phenom Nick Waterhouse.

NYC-based DJ Turmix is a Barcelona native who has been exciting music fans worldwide with his superb sessions for more than 20 years. He is vinyl collector and a specialist in 60's musical styles, from Latin boogaloo, to latin soul and other afrocuban rhythms. Turmix has also been instrumental in the recent latin boogaloo revival in NYC, spinning his extraordinary parties and sets all over NYC, as a collaborator with the famed Fania Records.

The legendary Dr. John is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans’ musical legacy, Dr. John is a true icon in American culture. His colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. Dr. John headed west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' “Exile On Main St.” During that time he launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Nite Tripper. His latest album "Locked Down", released in 2012 with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2013 Dr. John was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tulane University alongside His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Further, Dr. John is currently hard at work completing an album in tribute to Louis Armstrong which will be released in June of this year. After a half century of creating music for others and himself, Dr. John continues to write, arrange, produce and interpret with a passion that has yet to wane.

Hurray for the Riff Raff is the creation of frontwoman Alynda lee Segarra, a 26-year-old Bronx native who left home at an early age to travel the country before settling in New Orleans to play with a revolving cast of musicians. NPR's Ann Powers proclaimed that Hurray for the Riff Raff is, "Americana with a very young, fresh youthful sensibility. She's remaking traditions through her own voice. I'm just so struck by her voice. Literally. I love her singing voice...I can't stop listening to this woman's voice. I'm obsessed!" while Mojo Magazine raved that they “have immense potential and seductive power.” The band combines country and pop with honky-tonk, swamp pop, and blues for a wholly unique sound that’s unified by Segarra’s fresh vocals and beautifully crafted songs.

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks and the Michels family in celebrating the late Council Member Stan Michels at the sixth annual memorial jazz concert.

The jazz is hot and the setting is cool, underneath the majestic elms on the Stan Michels Promenade alongside the beautiful Heather Garden.

Stan Michels represented northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the sixth anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.

Gregory Porter’s Blue Note Records debut, the 2014 GRAMMY winning Liquid Spirit, arrived on the heels of two critically acclaimed, GRAMMY nominated indie label albums that quickly propelled Porter to the upper echelon of contemporary male jazz singers. Don Was, President of Blue Note, encouraged Porter to stay true to his artistic vision. “I firmly consider myself a jazz singer but I enjoy blues, southern soul, and gospel,” Porter says, “Those elements make their way inside my music. And I’ve always heard them in jazz.” Porter wields one of the most captivating baritone voices in music today. It emits enormous soul that conveys both the emotions and intellect of any given song without relying on vocal histrionics. Jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater praised Porter in JazzTimes, saying, “We haven’t had a male singer like him in a long time. He’s such a wonderful writer. He’s a story teller.”

Heralded by the Village Voice for having some of New York City’s “most electrifying young lions in jazz,” Revive Big Band has a finger on the pulse of today’s emerging progressive sound. Formed in 2010 by trumpeter, composer and arranger Igmar Thomas, this multi-generational ensemble knows no limits as they advance and celebrate the tradition of the big band. The band's repertoire features original compositions and inventive orchestrations of selected beats from legendary producers, notable hip-hop tracks and the original jazz records they sampled, all re-imagined and arranged into original works, in never seen before and sometimes never to be seen again live performances. The Revive Big Band’s recent shows include the 2014 WinterJazz Fest SummerStage Showcase featuring special guests Bilal and Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brooklyn Jazz with Oliver Lake and Sean Jones, special collaborations with Savion Glover and Pharoahe Monch and tributes to G.U.R.U and A Tribe Called Quest.
