<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Típica 73 with guest: Adalberto Santiago / Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/05/summerstage-tipica-73-with-guest-adelberto-santiago-williamsburg-salsa-orchestra http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/05/summerstage-tipica-73-with-guest-adelberto-santiago-williamsburg-salsa-orchestra Date: August 5, 2014

Típica ’73 began with a “Jam Session” Charanga (Flute/Violin) format in 1972 at an East Side club called “…and Vinnie’s. Eventually, it evolved into a 3-horn conjunto (combo) with Adalberto Santiago as lead vocalist. In 1975 Típica ’73 began recording “New Wave” Cuban music “La Candela,” “No Me Critiques,” and “La Escoba Barrendera”. In 1976, after a split due to creative differences, Típica ’73 emerged with a new format, which included the addition of a Flute/Sax, a Violin and Tito Allen as lead vocalist. Subsequent lead vocalists included Camilo Azuquita and José Alberto (El Canario). José Alberto was the vocalist in 1978 when Típica ’73 recorded the historic LP “Intercambio Cultural” (Cultural Exchange) at EGREM studios in Havana, Cuba. In 1983, Típica ’73 disbanded due to pressure and blacklisting stemming from the trip to Cuba. After an occasional reunion gig, and under the co-direction of founding members, Johnny Rodríguez and Sonny Bravo, Típica ’73 finally returned to its Charanga (Flute/Violin) roots and is currently performing with that format.

The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is a thrilling 11-piece salsa group which plays dynamic, dura arrangements of indie rock tunes we love. No bananas in the hair; this is innovative, astonishing salsa with a new, vibrant aesthetic. With an ever-evolving set list that includes songs by Arcade Fire, TV On The Radio, Spoon, M83, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Black Keys, and many more, the WSO has taken the typical salsa form and infused it with a completely modern identity. The explosive arrangements have established the band as a groundbreaking force in the New York underground, and has let to international acclaim for its completely new approach to the genre. Led by percussionist/arranger Gianni Mano (from the Latin-funk legends Radio Mundial), and fronted by Argentinian chanteuse, Solange Prat, the WSO has found an audience among new and classic salsa lovers, quickly becoming one of the most popular bands in New York City. The WSO has been featured recently in Rolling Stone Magazine (on the 2013 Latin Hot List), and on MTV Iggy, Telemundo, Univision, and on the nationally syndicated program LatiNation on Fox.

Mobile Mondays! & Salsoul Records have partnered to bring you a classic NYC Dance Experience. Mobile Mondays! is the premier all 45's vinyl night & music movement with a Mission to Save the Music, Preserve DJ Culture & Bring Back the Vibe & Soul of NYC. Originating in 1974 - NYC based Salsoul Records - named by Joe Bataan for his love of Salsa & Soul Music - is one of the most influential record companies in the disco era that has shaped the dance music industry for the last 40 years. Salsoul classics like - "My Love is Free", "Let No Man Put Asunder", "Call Me", "Got My Mind Made up" helped shape today's dance music & still control dance floors to this day. The show will feature The MM All Star DJ's, Operator Emz, Joey Carvello, Natasha Diggs, Just Blaze, Misbehaviour, $$$Mike. The event will be hosted by MM Hosts Miss Rebecca & Snkr Joe & Salsoul Records Label Manager, Rachael Hardway. Mobile Mondays! takes place every Monday 10pm at The Bowery Electric & gives music lovers a chance to go back to the New York City they love best; when records were events, the DJ was on the pulpit and the dance floor was epic.

Joe Bataan, the “King of Latin Soul,” helped coin the phrase "Salsoul" in 1974 lending the name to his first album. Bataan was influenced by two musical styles: the Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop. Bataan recorded three albums and several singles for Salsoul Records and the Latin subdivision of Salsoul Records, Salsoul Leyendas. Titles include SalSoul, Rap-O-Clap-O, Joe Bataan II, Afrofilipino and a new compilation of his greatest hits titled Tropical Classics: Joe Bataan, which features the early 1979 hip-hop hit "Rap-O-Clap-O” and additional classic titles he performed for the Salsoul Leyendas label.

The three-piece female disco group First Choice was influential to early house music and the Salsoul Records movement. Their tracks “Let No Man Put Asunder” and “Dr. Love” are two of the most sampled tracks from the Salsoul catalog. Original group members Ursula Herring & Annette Hardeman will be joined on stage by disco artist Wardell Piper (“Super Sweet”) for their performance.

Double Exposure is one of the most prominent American-Disco groups of the Salsoul era known as the first group to release the 12-inch single. Their 1976 album chart-topping album Ten Percent featured a pair of major club hits including "Ten Percent" and "My Love is Free." Members James Williams, Joseph Harris, Charles Whittington & Leonard "Butch" Davis are actively touring and making music to this day.

Instant Funk burst onto the '70s disco scene with the million-selling single "I Got My Mind Made Up" and their Gold album Instant Funk. Paradise Garage DJ Larry Levan and engineer Bob Blank’s 1979 remix of “I Got My Mind Made Up” quickly flooded dance floors across the country. The band started out with the core lineup of bassist Raymond Earl, drummer Scotty Miller, and guitarist Kim Miller and later expanded to include additional members.

Skyy enjoyed worldwide success with their distinctive blend of sassy vocals, funky bass lines and thumping guitar licks. The Ladies of Skyy, Denise, Delores and Bonny are best known for their release of the Skyy Line album in late 1981. Their hit song “Call Me” became the first #1 R&B hit followed by their 1984 release of Inner City.

At a time when disco was still breaking into the mainstream, Carol Williams was one of the few female vocalists in the genre to hold stake in other creative elements of her craft besides singing. Working with producer Vincent Montana Jr., she not only selected a good share of material for her Salsoul debut album, 'Lectric Lady, but also co-wrote three selections and acted as co-publisher. 'Lectric Lady was released in 1977 and featured hits such as "Come Back" and "Love Is You."

Los Monstritos are young "monster" percussionist virtuosos who hurtle headlong into a variety of Latin music genres—from plena to boogaloo, from bomba to bachata and salsa, from rumba to meringue. To these styles, they add their own twist, reflecting the hip-hop and regaaeton rhythms of their Bronx neighborhoods. The members are Nelson Matthew Gonzalez, scion of one of the great families of Afro-Puerto Rican music; Oreste Abrantes, a Cuban Puerto Rican powerhouse conguero; and Jason Gonzalez, bongo virtuoso. Los Monstritos are pupils of some of the best Latin percussion masters of New York. Their music is sometimes hip, sometimes steeped in roots... always explosive in its delivery. At Wave Hill, the percussionists are joined by upright bass, guitar and keyboard players.

<![CDATA[SummerStagePresents: Motown Gospel Revue featuring Tasha Cobbs / Smokie Norful / Pastor Charles Jenkins / VaShawn Mitchell / Kierra Sheard / Micah Stampley / Brian Courtney Wilson]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/09/summerstagepresents-motown-gospel-revue-featuring-tasha-cobbs-smokie-norful-pastor-charles-jenkins-vashawn-mitchell-kierra-sheard-micah-stampley-brian-courtney-wilson http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/09/summerstagepresents-motown-gospel-revue-featuring-tasha-cobbs-smokie-norful-pastor-charles-jenkins-vashawn-mitchell-kierra-sheard-micah-stampley-brian-courtney-wilson Date: August 9, 2014

When Tasha Cobbs took the stage on June 14, 2012 at Northview Christian Church, in Montgomery, Alabama, she did so neither as a nationally renowned vocalist, nor as a recording artist making her major-label debut. Instead, with microphone in hand, she ascended the platform prepared to do what she had done every week since her teenage years—lead the congregation into worship. Cobbs won her first-ever Grammy for Best Gospel/Contemporary Music Performance for “Break Every Chain.” in 2014, from her album, Grace, a moving example of the raw power of a live worship experience. Produced by multi-award-winning artist and producer VaShawn Mitchell, the eight-song project reveals Tasha at her best as a psalmist, songwriter, and minister. A pastor’s kid and long-time worship leader, Tasha has developed her gifts as a songwriter and psalmist to become a nationally recognized minister. She currently serves as Worship Leader for the Young Adult Division of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, while simultaneously holding the position of Worship Pastor at the dReam Center Church of Atlanta. With the release of Grace, Tasha Cobbs is sure to become a recognized name in churchgoing households across the nation.

The 2002 release of Smokie Norful’s debut album I Need You Now, heralded the birth of a new Gospel legend. That project, led by the instantly classic title song, achieved gold-certification while winning the first of the numerous awards that would mark his truly groundbreaking career. In the decade since then, Smokie has sold more than two million albums, earned four #1 albums, received countless GRAMMY®, Dove, and Stellar awards, and has twice been named Billboard magazine’s “Gospel Artist of the Year.” Meanwhile, audiences around the world have come to embrace him as songwriter, balladeer, worshipper, and preacher.

Pastor Charles Jenkins is a dynamic, inspirational and visionary religious and community leader who is widely known as the senior pastor of the legendary Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois. He is the author of the book, Thriving In Change, and is a sought-after adviser to governmental and political leaders, high-profile personalities, business groups, and advocacy organizations. Perhaps less known is the fact that Charles Jenkins is a GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter and a recording artist. His CD project with Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church—Pastor Charles Jenkins Presents Fellowship Chicago Live: The Best of Both Worlds, was released in 2012. Jenkins believes that music can be the basis of an urban Christian movement that attracts people in ways that many traditional mediums cannot. “There are opportunities to create amazing music and to create a meaningful movement around that music,” he said. “For us, this is not just a CD, it a movement for God and good that begins with this project.”

Six-time Stellar Award-winner and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist VaShawn Mitchell soared to the top of the charts in 2011 with his mega-hit single “Nobody Greater,” from his top-selling, award-winning album Triumphant. Billboard magazine declared “Nobody Greater” the #1 Most Played Gospel Song of 2011, and the single held the #1 position for nine consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and crossed-over to the Urban Contemporary Adult charts. Now the acclaimed singer-songwriter is back with Created 4 This, which picks up where Triumphant left off. This project is a body of music that features Mitchell’s signature style: contemporary themes with a traditional Gospel vibe. The praise and worship music on the CD is encouraging, inspiring, and uplifting. “I wanted to build on ‘Nobody Greater’ and Triumphant to create a new compilation of music to empower and equip people in this economy to understand why we are here and what we are created for,” says Mitchell. “The whole message of the album is that we still have hope, that we shall overcome and be victorious, and that God will be there to sustain us in this next phase of our lives.”

Kierra Sheard is a Grammy Award-nominated, GMA Dove Award and Stellar Award-winning recording artist and songwriter. The daughter of Karen Clark Sheard, of the legendary Clark Sisters, and Bishop J. Drew Sheard, senior pastor of Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God In Christ in Detroit, Michigan, Kierra first came to the world’s attention as a nine year old, belting out vocals well beyond her years in a live recording of the hit, “The Will Of God,” which was on her mother’s 1997 solo debut release, Finally Karen. Until that point, Kierra had shown little interest in being a singer, and the family was unaware of her exceptional talent. “I didn’t want to do the song with my mother and she had to make me practice,” Kierra recalls. However, after her performance with her mother, offers for recording deals started to pour in. By 2003, Kierra had a label deal with EMI Gospel, which propelled her into music stardom—churning out hits that showed her vocal prowess and diversity, such as “You Don’t Know,” “Love Like Crazy,” “Praise Him Now,” and “Invisible.”

Nearly every song ever recorded tackles the topic of love. It’s long been the favored subject for songwriters and poets through the ages, but when an artist turns his focus to the love of Jesus, the result is bound to be powerful, especially when that artist is the multi-talented worship leader, songwriter and producer Micah Stampley. Love Never Fails is Stampley’s sixth album and his debut on Motown Gospel. The project spotlights the passionate vocal delivery and compelling songwriting that have made him one of the gospel community’s most acclaimed young artists. Stampley and his wife Heidi co-wrote six of the eleven tunes on the new album including the exhilarating and emotionally charged worship song “We Will Praise You.” Stampley’s music has long had a global flavor and that approach continues on Love Never Fails. “How He Loves Me” is an infectious reggae tune that features vocals from the talented Jamaican songstress Chevelle Franklyn, and “Oh Give Thanks” will remind listeners of the sheer joy that comes from praising God in song.

Brian Courtney Wilson was raised in the Chicago, Illinois area. Since his childhood, Wilson has been singing, starting with the adult male chorus at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church. “Before my mom and dad knew I was going to be a singer, God had given them a promise to nurture into the person that I am today,” he says. “We are all given some promise, some vision for our future that we have to nurture, endure hard times for, and always believe in.” Wilson has nurtured his promise into a remarkable career in music ministry. Since the release of his debut CD, Just Love, Wilson has been touted as one of gospel music’s contemporary break-through artists of 2010 and 2011. Wilson says Music World Gospel has become the perfect home for his sacred art: “It’s a place where I can do more than just church music. I can do music for the world that’s rooted in the church.”

<![CDATA[SUMMERSTAGE PRESENTS PASSENGER / LIAM BAILEY / STU LARSEN / DJ NATASHA DIGGS IN ASSOCIATION WITH GIANT STEP]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/10/summerstage-passenger-liam-bailey http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/10/summerstage-passenger-liam-bailey Date: August 10, 2014

The last year or so has certainly been a wild and wonderful ride for Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg: from years dedicated to busking the streets of towns and cities across the globe, to worldwide recognition. Long before Passenger's unmistakable voice unexpectedly found a home on mainstream radio waves around the world, Rosenberg was committed to taking his music to the people literally one street at a time. When the Brighton UK-born artist's band broke up in 2007, Rosenberg inadvertently set about forging his own musical path as a genuine troubadour. He held onto the band's name, and began travelling across countries and continents, armed with only his guitar and his voice and a swag of unique songs. After nearly three years of travelling and three albums, Passenger had established itself as one of the most popular new acts on the Australian live circuit and started to regularly sell out rooms and theatres of 500-plus. It wasn't until the release of his second single, "Let Her Go," on his 4th album that the rest of the world began to tune in. "Let Her Go" has topped the 2.5 million mark in global sales, as well as over 78 million YouTube hits so far. Of course, you can still catch Passenger busking in almost every city he visits -- only nowadays, it's pretty much standing-room only!

Born to a Jamaican father and British mother, Liam Bailey’s musical influences range from soul to reggae, and punk to R&B. While his voice is often compared to that of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, he’s as likely to reference Etta James as he is The Smiths. Known for co-writing Chase & Status’ Top 5 smash: “Blind Faith feat. Liam Bailey,” Liam’s initial introduction to the music business came via the late Amy Winehouse who, after meeting him released his first 2 EPs on her Lioness Records imprint. Amy first heard Liam’s music through a mutual friend & acclaimed producer Salaam Remi, who amongst others, is working with Liam on his debut album. The album, which was also co-written and produced by Bailey will be released by Flying Buddha (Sony Music Masterworks) in August, coinciding with a U.S. tour.

Stu Larsen was born in the town of Dalby, in Australia, a close-knit, religious community of less than 10,000 people. Nothing much happened in Dalby and that was pretty much how folks liked it. Predictability was what made people feel comfortable and Stu's career in a local Bank meant that by the age of 23, his life was pretty well mapped out for him.
In 2010, whilst working on the 'Boy and Bear' tour in Australia, Stu met Mike Rosenberg (of 'Passenger'), back in the days when money was tight and touring meant shared rooms and forged close friendships. Mike was moved by the quality of Stu's insightful material and invited him to support and tour-manage him. Alongside the madness and fame brought about for Mike by the massive success of 'Let Her Go', Stu kept on doing what he loves best - just travelling, sharing his music and taking pictures - but now with much broader horizons and to much larger audiences, building up a stronger and stronger following along the road. Stu has already achieved a #2 on the Australian singer-songwriter chart. Amazingly - and almost uniquely, this was been achieved without management or the backing of a label and was funded entirely by the sale of albums at gigs along his journey. Now, for 2014, Stu plans an album release and a solo tour of Australia, the UK, Europe and America.

Bobby Sanabria - drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, recording artist, producer, filmmaker, conductor, educator, activist, multi-cultural warrior and multiple Grammy nominee - has performed with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed ensembles. His diverse recording and performing experience includes work with such legendary figures as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo Santamaría, Ray Barretto, Marco Rizo, Arturo Sandoval, Roswell Rudd, Chico O'Farrill, Candido, Yomo Toro, Francisco Aguabella, Larry Harlow, Henry Threadgill, and the Godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario Bauzá.

Chico & Rita is a stunning, Oscar-nominated animated feature for adults. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams, while Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey -- in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero -- brings heartache and torment, as they battle impossible odds to unite in music and love. Along the way they meet Chano Pozo, Dizzy Gillespie and travel to three continents in pursuit of their passions. Directed by Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba.

Devonté (Dev) Hynes is a producer, songwriter, and artist currently based in New York City. He has written and produced songs for a wide range of artists including Solange Knowles, the Chemical Brothers, Florence and the Machine and Sky Ferriera. Dev also writes music under the moniker of Blood Orange, and has released two albums, titled Coastal Grooves and Cupid Deluxe, on Domino Recording Co. Most recently, Dev composed the score for the Gia Coppola directed, and TriBeCa Film Festival featured film, Palo Alto; and in addition, was a speaker at the 2014 TED conference held in Vancouver.

Moses Sumney is a new LA-based singer & songwriter. Growing up, he was so shy that he would write songs avidly but hide them inside his mattress. At 20, he moved out of his parents' house to study creative writing at UCLA and finally gathered the courage to start performing music. After purchasing a beat-up guitar from a friend, he taught himself to play and accompany himself. He grew quickly as an artist at UCLA, soon performing weekly alongside the university's most esteemed musicians. Now graduated, he creates soul-infused folk tunes using guitar and layered arrangements built on loop pedals. Recently, SPIN Magazine described him as a "soul-folk warrior," Okayplayer called him "a name you should be hearing plenty of," and Pigeons & Planes called his voice a "breathing instrument that suggests a depth of feeling lyrics can only partially express."All of this, and he hasn't even officially released any music yet.

Sean Nicholas Savage is a Canadian Singer and Ballad Composer. In 2013 he released the record Other Life, his most emotionally thematic work and first in a year since he prolifically delivered three full length cassette albums; Flamingo, Won Ton Jaz and Trippple Midnight Karma in 2011. Savage touches always on a theory or profound observation and comes to at least a suggested point in his pop, drama compositions. Perhaps the pinnacle attraction of his work are these observations, learned wisdoms, the ongoing adventures shaping Savage himself, the Artist, the Performer, the Narrator. A pop ‘character’, but with severe realness comparable to Punk/Pop greats, such as Sinead O’Connor, Boy George or fellow Canadian poetics Majical Cloudz and Mac DeMarco. However, with the way music is consumed today, comparisons of contemporaries fail to do any contemporary justice. A broad range of genres and movements; Jazz, Punk, Country and Bossa that must all leave a stain on an artist that is himself an art admirer. Once a staple spectacle performance in Montreal’s all night illegal party scene, Savage has since taken to consistent touring and producing wherever he may be, in the past two years. In the spring of 2014 he is set to release Bermuda Waterfall, the much anticipated masterpiece follow up to his opus; Other Life.

On one August evening in the 1970's New York gave birth to a sound that would change the face of Latin music forever. At the renown Cheetah Nightclub, there was an ensemble of artists got together for what became a magical evening of music. The show was billed as "Our Latin Thing". In the decades ahead those all-star musicians would become the ambassadors and juggernauts of Latin Music around the world. They became the musical reflection of the times, needs, and struggles of New York's Latino community. Their music was "Salsa Gorda," influenced by American Jazz, Soul, and Rock and Roll. Their music became part of Americana. Currently billed as "Our Latin Thing", the group performs as an assortment of this music's top hits. This Musical/Theatrical like revue, will take the audience on a musical poetic journey. Re-Live the music, re-live the times, re-live the magic....This is "Our Latin Thing."

Ubiquita Sound System is home to an ever-growing roster of brilliantly talented an accomplished female DJ's. Established in 2000, as one of the first groundbreaking all-female DJ residencies in NYC nightlife, the Ubiquita brand has become synonymous with a stamp of excellence for women on the 1 & 2's .The legendary DJ collective has appeared on the cover of the Village Voice and have played a wide array of venues, special events and cultural institutions around the world.

Formerly known as the Ladies of Ubiquita, these gorgeous selectors' more notable appearances include Good Day NY, The Studio Museum of Harlem, SummerStage, Brooklyn Academy of Music, VH1 Hip Hop Honors weekend, The Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, Winter Music Conference in Miami, The Brooklyn Museum & Harlem Stage. Notable brand partnerships include Scion, Red Bull & Cover Girl.

This Academy Award-winning documentary is the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. Twenty Feet from Stardom juxtaposes interviews with industry legends (Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and others) and the relative unknowns who support them like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill as they illuminate the art of melding their own distinct voices with lead vocals and reveal their desires for careers as solo artists. <![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Charlie Parker Jazz Festival: The Wallace Roney Orchestra / Lionel Loueke / Melissa Aldana / Kris Bowers with special guest Chris Turner]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/23/summerstage-charlie-parker-jazz-festival-wallace-roney-lionel-loueke-melissa-aldana-kris-bowers-with-special-guest-chris-turner http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/08/23/summerstage-charlie-parker-jazz-festival-wallace-roney-lionel-loueke-melissa-aldana-kris-bowers-with-special-guest-chris-turner Date: August 23, 2014

Wallace Roney earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and his elders since age 16. He has been an integral part of the band with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters. But his most important and meaningful relationship was with Miles Davis. Wallace was mentored by Miles Davis after Miles heard him in 1983 at his birthday gala performance in Carnegie Hall. Their association peaked when Miles chose Wallace to share the stage at his historic performance in Montreux in 1991.

In what must be one of the grandest musical gestures imaginable, Wayne Shorter, one of the most important composers in the history of Jazz music and arguably the greatest living composer in Jazz today, bestowed on to Wallace Roney the scores to two large scale, large ensemble pieces that Wayne conceived and composed for Miles when he was still in the band but were never recorded (or even performed) and told Wallace he was now the person who could best fully realize these works. These two major works, Legend (composed in 1967) and Universe (composed in 1968 and 69) are amazing in their scope and breadth (they are written for as many as 18 pieces, including english horn, bassoon, french horn, flutes and clarinet along with more traditional instrumentation) and show Wayne to already be a fully formed masterful composer and orchestrator of large scale works at this early date in his career. Wayne also included a third unrecorded composition, Twin Dragon which was written for Miles in 1981 at his request as he was looking for material to perform for his comeback. Wallace Roney, who has performed and recorded with Wayne and was Miles Davis' only protégé, has become a pivotal artist on the scene in his own right. With his vast experience with these great artists, he is clearly the right choice to bring this important music to life.

Hailed as a "gentle virtuoso" by Jon Pareles of The New York Times, guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke follows up his acclaimed Blue Note releases Karibu and Mwaliko with the extraordinary Heritage. Co-produced by piano great and Blue Note label mate Robert Glasper, Heritage finds Loueke at the helm of a new lineup with a more electric sound. In addition, Loueke, long known for his nylon-string acoustic guitar, does not feature that instrument on Heritage. He transitions to steel-string acoustic and electric guitars A veteran of bands led by Terence Blanchard and Herbie Hancock, Loueke is bringing jazz into vibrant contact with the sounds of West Africa, in particular his native Benin. The title Heritage is a direct reference to his personal odyssey. "I have two heritages," Loueke says. "One is from my ancestors from Africa, and that goes through my music, my body, my soul, every aspect of what I do. But also I have the heritage from the Occident, from the West, from Europe and the U.S. I speak English, I speak French, and I have that heritage too. I called this album Heritage because I've been blessed by all different parts of the world, and most of the songs reflect that."

25 year old Chilean saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana had already caught the ears of the New York jazz scene before winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition last September - the first female instrumentalist and first South American to do so in the history of the competition. Now the entire world are discovering her. She picked up the saxophone by age 6, inspired by her father Marcos Aldana - himself a world class saxophonist - and he taught her how to transcribe the solos of great saxophonists - not least Charlie Parker. On stage she is joined by her “Crash Trio" featuring bassist Pablo Menares, also from Chile, & Cuban drummer Francisco Mela (dr) as she was on her forthcoming June 17 Concord Records album also entitled “Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio”.

Pianist Kris Bowers is one of the newest and brightest lights on the jazz landscape. Schooled in jazz and classical music, raised amid the rap and hip-hop of the 1990s, inspired by the cinematic power of the great film composers of recent decades, Bowers’ sound – though rooted in traditional styles – is open to numerous external influences that keep the music fresh and vibrant for a new century. This rich and eclectic sensibility is evident from the very first notes of Heroes + Misfits, an ambitious debut album that positions Bowers at the forefront of a talented sextet and showcases a musical and compositional style that – while clearly rooted in the jazz tradition – is also reflective of an eclectic musical age. Bowers musical sensibilities were taking shape before he even saw the light of day. The story has it that his parents positioned headphones on his mother’s belly and piped soft jazz directly into his evolving consciousness in the months before he was born. And it was just the beginning.

This classically trained crooner is a soul singer for the ages and a writer for our times. Starting at four years old, Chris Turner was a member of the Kairos Youth Choir, at nine with the San Francisco Opera Company, the Young Musicians Program at the University of California (YMP), the School of the Arts (SOTA) in San Francisco and was the featured vocalist for the SF Jazz High School All-Stars. In the GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensemble, he performed with many GRAMMY artists. Chris graduated from the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Chris has toured worldwide with Esperanza Spalding and Bilal and he recently opened for Gregory Porter at Town Hall in NYC. He performed on BET "106 & Park" as a MusicMatters “Artist To Watch” and premiered his first single, “Liquid Love”. Chris currently has a digital mix tape called “LOVElife Is A Challenge” and is featured on new recordings by Eric Harland, Kris Bowers, and Harvey Mason Sr.

When Kenny Barron first heard that the National Endowment for the Arts inducted him into its prestigious Jazz Masters class of 2010, he felt honored to be among the greats of the music who have also received the U.S.’s top honor in jazz. “I was excited at the acknowledgment of my service,” says the 66-year pianist whose solo career has also garnered him numerous awards in jazz critics and readers polls. “I’ve been playing music for a long time, and this award reflects that I’ve made a significant contribution.” One of the most renowned, most lyrical—and busiest—pianists in jazz today, Barron is a multiple-Grammy nominee, was honored with induction into the American Jazz Hall of Fame (2005), and received the MAC Lifetime Achievement Award (2005) and the Mid Atlantic Arts Living Legacy Award (2009). Also in 2009, Barron was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an esteemed honorary society and center for independent policy research. As a composer, arranger and bandleader, Barron has spent five decades at the forefront of the jazz piano aristocracy. An in-demand sideman in his early days on the jazz scene, the Philadelphia native launched his solo career in 1973 with Sunset to Dawn, released by Muse Records. He has recorded more than forty albums as a leader, including his latest, The Traveler, in 2008, on Universal France/Sunnyside.

Cindy Blackman Santana is a virtuoso drummer whose artistry spans the realms of jazz and rock. As a bandleader and as a musician, Cindy is a sound innovator with a passion for pushing creative boundaries and exploring movement and change. She is as known for the nuances and colors she brings to her beats and fills as she is for the sheer power of her soulful playing. Cindy has been creating magnificent musical time and space since the beginning of her career as a busking street performer in New York City in the ’80s through the present day, touring the globe and making albums at the top of her game— both with her own bands as well as artists like Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, Bill Laswell, Joss Stone, Joe Henderson, Buckethead, Don Pullen, Hugh Masakela, Lenny Kravitz and Angela Bofill. Most recently, Cindy has been sitting in with Santana. While substituting for Dennis Chambers at a Santana show in early 2010, Cindy and Carlos sparked a relationship, on and off the stage, that led to their Marriage in 2010. In addition to her work with Another Lifetime, Cindy & Carlos plan to collaborate on projects that will no doubt reflect their shared passion for improvisation, and belief in the transcendent nature of music.

Born in Oakland, CA, as a music-hungry youngster, Craig Handy experimented on guitar, trombone, and piano before settling on his first true love, the saxophone. His distinctive sound and authentic instrumental prowess were immediately noticed by artists of stature. Handy moved to New York in 1986 and began several associations with formidable artists including Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, master drummers Art Blakey and Roy Haynes, South African melodist Abdullah Ibrahim, and the Mingus Dynasty Band. For the past several years, Handy has recorded or toured consistently with guitarist John Scofield, trumpeter Charles Tolliver, the John Hicks Legacy Band, and most notably The Cookers - a collective of stalwart leaders renowned for playing that simmers or surges to a boiling point - with brethren Billy Harper, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, and David Weiss. In 2014, Handy returns as an original bandleader and party-starter for his new touring and recording project. Titled Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, Handy draws from his fondness for the music of New Orleans, smack attached to the groove-filled re-imaginings of originals and standards by the late, great organist Jimmy Smith. The release includes cameos by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Wynton Marsalis while filling a rotating drum chair with Jason Marsalis, Herlin Riley, Ali Jackson, and Steve Williams. But the band at the core of the recording springs out of Handy’s current residence in Weehawken, NJ, and shines a light on organist Kyle Koehler, guitarist Matt Chertkoff, and sousaphonist Clark Gayton.

According to Will Friedwald at The Wall Street Journal, vocalist Brianna Thomas "... may well be the best young straight-ahead jazz singer of her generation." Thomas was born and raised in Peoria, IL where she first cut her teeth as a performer. Initially taught and influenced by her Father, drummer and vocalist Charlie Thomas, Brianna comes from a rich background of diverse musical influences. Brianna moved to NYC in 2007 to attend college at The New School University and has since established herself as a talented vocalist on the scene today. Since graduating in 2011 she has performed with jazz greats Wycliffe Gordon, Wynton Marsalis, Russell Malone, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and longtime hero Dianne Reeves. Thomas has also performed Nationally and Internationally ranging from the "Women In Jazz Festival" at Jazz At Lincoln Center to the prestigious Montreaux, Umbria, Bern and Sochi Jazz Festivals. Brianna recently released her debut album "You Must Believe In Love" Feb 17th 2014 on Sound On Purpose Records. The best illustration of Ms Thomas is given by the words of legendary trombonist and Jazz Messenger Curtis Fuller : "a marvelous new artist who has all it takes to reach the top of the jazz profession and music in general."

Barnard College and Summer on the Hudson present a celebration of women in music with some of finest musicians from NYC colleges and universities at an evening performance in an astounding setting.

Make Some Noise lineup:

Saman

Saman is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter from Washington D.C. She is now based in New York. Her music aims to make people feel a lot of feelings.

Liberty Zoo

Liberty Zoo is an eclectic, funk-pop band made up of five rowdy youngsters. Their boppin’ music is composed of looped vocals, tap dancing, rap, groovy guitar riffs, synth magic, and funky flute licks. Liberty Zoo is establishing itself as a rising band in New York, having opened for such artists as Alex Calder and most recently Big Sean at Columbia University’s Bacchanal festival. They will be releasing their debut EP in the fall and will be playing shows around the city all summer. To fully appreciate their fun-loving, dance-y energy, see them jam out live!

Luz Pinos

Luz Pinos is an Ecuadorian singer/composer based in NYC. Her music is a mixture of South American traditional rhythms put together into an improvisational personal style.

Sarah Dooley

Born in Indiana and currently based in Brooklyn, Sarah recently released her debut indie-pop album “Stupid Things," which was featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and ranked #17 on the iTunes pop charts. Her album has been covered by over thirty publications, including Huffington Post, Seventeen Magazine, and Refinery29. Sarah is a proud graduate of Barnard College, where she studied playwriting and, at one time, danced around as college mascot, Millie the Bear (it was the best day of her life).

Adi Meyerson Group

Adi Meyerson is an Israeli-raised Bassist and composer. She received her first musical training at the prestigious "Charles A. Smith Jerusalem High School of the Arts" on bass guitar at the age of 14. After graduating from high school, she discovered a love for Jazz and started playing the upright bass.
