Since 2005, Balkan Beat Box has been pumping out a kinetic kaleidoscope of Mediterranean-meets-electronic music and shows no signs of stopping their boisterous party. Fueled in part by people’s protest movements across the globe—from the Arab Spring, to Occupy Wall Street, to Israel’s own massive social protests—their music captures the cautious hope and re-energized spirit of our time. Also hailing from the Balkans, "crunk charlatan" DJ Joro-Boro will bring his unique beats—described as etnoteck, glitch-folk and post-national bass—to the turntable at the top of the night. Get there early for a belly dancing lesson (Dance of Venus) that will surely shake up your mid-section.

The Dessoff Choirs, one of New York’s oldest singing ensembles, celebrates spring with a lively concert of folksongs, madrigals, and spirituals.
Drawing on the European tradition, Dessoff sings five English folksongs set by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who travelled the British Isles collecting these tunes, and crystallized them for all time in his lyrical style. The group celebrates America’s own musical past with arrangements of moving, powerful, and joyful African-American spirituals arranged by giants in the field, from William Dawson to Moses Hogan. To honor the rich diversity of northern Manhattan, the program also includes a group of Latin American pieces, combining exciting rhythms and beautiful melodies.
The stunning setting for this FREE concert will be Billings Lawn in Fort Tryon Park in Northern Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River. Enter Fort Tryon Park through the Southern entrance at Margaret Corbin Circle and walk west and down hill through the Heather Garden to the Billings Lawn.

Welcome to the omnivorous world of the South Central-raised star born, Tyrone Griffin. Ty has been creating music since he was a three-year old writing lyrics and playing a keyboard. Since then, he’s taught himself how to play the drums, bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitar, the violin, the piano, and the Wurlitzer organ. His inspirations go way deeper than just R&B. Ella Fitzgerald, 2Pac, Prince, Michael Jackson and Nirvana are as important to his conception of sound as Mint Condition and Brian McKnight. So is contemporary electronic music. If anything, Ty Dolla $ign might be heir to DJ Quik’s title of America’s most complete artist. This is why he’s collaborated with everyone from top 40 perennials like Wiz Khalifa and Chris Brown, to West Coast hood stars like Y.G. and Joe Moses. And in the immediate future, Beach House 2 is adding a sundeck, Jacuzzi, and more bad chicks to the cabana.

Presents The Soul Rebels/Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen/Lost Bayou]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/07/celebrate-brooklyn-presents-the-soul-rebelsjon-cleary-the-absolute-monster-gentlemenlost-bayou http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/07/celebrate-brooklyn-presents-the-soul-rebelsjon-cleary-the-absolute-monster-gentlemenlost-bayou Date: June 7, 2014

A rousing triple bill that celebrates the many sounds of Louisiana. New Orleans’ The Soul Rebels, have been called “the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong." (Village Voice) Strong words, but well deserved by this powerhouse eight-piece ensemble, cooked up by its founders Derrick Moss and Lumar LeBlanc to play the radio hits they loved in the classic brass band tradition they grew up on.

Jon Cleary is another Crescent City dreamer made good. The UK-born pianist has been living in and soaking up the musical legacy of NoLa for decades, and his current band is a mainstay at Jazz Fest and legendary venues like Tipitina’s and the Maple Leaf Bar. “Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own,” writes David Fricke of Rolling Stone, “but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi river, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-meters roll of his Gentlemen.”

Rounding it out are the incredible Lost Bayou Ramblers, from Lafayette, bringing a modern edge to traditional Cajun music. Their blazing brand of foot-stomping zydeco landed them an opening spot on this spring’s Arcade Fire tour.

“In the music business, perhaps the most dreamed about position that fans and musicians alike fantasize over is being the lead singer in a group. Sisqó, long time front man of the multi-platinum group Dru Hill and a Grammy nominated solo artist whose talent is so extraordinary, he towers as the perfect example of a true quadruple threat, excelling as a first class singer, dancer, songwriter, and actor. As the voice behind a vast list of classics such as “Tell Me”, “Incomplete”, “How Deep Is Your Love”, and the earth shattering smash single “The Thong Song”, for which he caused an international mania of epic proportions, are just some of the hit records that have secured Sisqo’s place in music history. A true talent of the highest kind, Sisqo is as passionate about acting as he is about singing, most evident in his long list of television and film roles to include “Sisqo’s Shakedown” (MTV); “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” (ABC); and the immensely popular “Show Dogs” starring Academy Award Winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. Admired by several fellow superstar artists, Sisqo' has written for and recorded with industry heavyweights Mya, DMX, and Lil’ Kim. Sisqo' won an astonishing six Billboard awards in 2000 including Male Artist of the Year. While still only in his early thirties, Sisqo' is nearly a 20-year music veteran who thus far has had a career that many of the brightest and most successful singers of today can only dream of.”

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound / La Mecanica Popular / Little Louie Vega (Elements of Life/Masters at Work)]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/14/summerstage-roberto-roena-y-su-apollo-sound-la-mecanica-popular-little-louie-vega-elements-of-lifemasters-at-work http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/14/summerstage-roberto-roena-y-su-apollo-sound-la-mecanica-popular-little-louie-vega-elements-of-lifemasters-at-work Date: June 14, 2014

Roberto Roena is a salsa music percussionist, orchestra leader, and dancer. Roena was one of the original members of El Gran Combo, and he later became the leader of his own band, "Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound," arguably one of the best Latin salsa bands in Puerto Rico. Roena has also been a long-time member of the Fania All Stars, the showcase group for the Fania Records label, which has enjoyed worldwide success since the 1970s. Complementing the musicality of his salsa group was always the showmanship inherent in Roberto Roena. Dying his hair in new colors, playing percussion in his underwear “flying” around the stage of New York City's Madison Square Garden were some of the tricks that he used to stand out among the other groups in vogue. Roberto always considered variety as the key to success, leading him to include in his musical repertoire everything from go-go to the romantic, the same in English as in Spanish. Given Roena has been performing for nearly 55 years with his orchestra, he's obviously doing something very right.

A meeting of musicians from Perú, the United States and Colombia – only possible in New York – gave birth to La Mecánica Popular in 2011. Led by native Peruvian Efraín Rozas, the band has a unique sound, steeped in the salsa dura of the 1970′s, but moves along in a trippy way with experimental synths and Peruvian chicha style guitars, without ever loosing clave. Their self-titled debut was produced by Xuxi Lazzaro (producer of Rita Indiana, and Grammy winner Juan Luis Guerra), and has been praised by critics around the world. They have been called "one of the top 3 live Latin acts in the U.S.," by Latin-Pop star Juanes. La Mecánica Popular is one of the most exciting bands in the new wave of future-rooted Latin American music, combining effortlessly avant-garde and psychedelic sounds with a tight and syncopated Salsa flavor.

A godfather of global dance music, “Little” Louie Vega has painted an award-winning career from a palette mixed with everything from salsa and afro-beat, to jazz, hip-hop and soul. What distinguishes the Grammy winner and 4-time nominee as one of the best living house music deejays is his ability to evolve alongside the times, distill the current musical landscape through his unique taste and put his own timeless spin on it. Breaking down musical barriers and bringing people together through a love of music has always been Vega’s aim; after more than 20 years in the game his contributions continue to positively influence the global house and world music. Listen closely as the best has yet to come from Louie Vega!

The Philly-born singer-songwriter AMOS LEE, a “gentle genius” (Billboard) of R&B and country-inflected folk, hit his stride with last year’s Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song. His fifth release on Blue Note, it’s a record that “brims with introspection about life and love.” (Entertainment Weekly) Lee has often been compared to John Prine, Bill Withers, and Norah Jones, and much has been made of his one-time job teaching second grade. For all his made-for-mainstream-success backstory, TV placements, and relentlessly appealing voice (one NY Times critic designated it “light amber, mildly sweet, a touch of grain”), Lee has forged a career as a songwriter of great integrity and authenticity.

LAKE STREET DIVE, once of Boston and now of Brooklyn, are a captivating indie-pop-swing foursome whose knockout lead singer Rachel Price “has the soulful howl of a young Etta James.” (Daily News) The band, all graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music, has been together since 2005, but broke through seemingly overnight with a viral video of them covering the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back” on a Boston street corner in 2013. Millions of views later, they have made the rounds of late night television from Colbert to Letterman and sold out a succession of increasingly bigger venues in a remarkable run of success that will eventually lead them who knows where but includes a stop along the way right here, on this one perfect night in June, in Brooklyn, under the stars.

Make Music NY with the Five Boro Story Project & Poe Park Visitor Center will bring together notable Bronx historians, writers, singers, and rappers to present Bronx anthems and true stories, "Back in the Day at Poe Park: A Bronx Storytelling and Music Festival".

Produced by the Five Boro Story Project, this event will occur on the summer solstice as part of Make Music New York, an annual public music extravaganza.

Starting with the story of when Edgar Allan Poe came to the Bronx in 1846, moving to true tales of Poe Park’s epic concerts in the 50’s and dance battles in the 80’s, to a reading of a romantic rendezvous in Poe’s cottage, to an incredible true account from a former caretaker of the cottage, “Back in the Day” will take you on a journey through the Bronx from Edgar Allan Poe's day to our day.

Stories will be interspersed with musical performances, including a musical rendition of Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” and songs about the Bronx from local hip hop and R&B artists. The program will conclude with an open forum inviting people in the audience to come to the mic and share stories, memories, music, and reflections on the Bronx.

Matthieu Chedid is the son of French singer Louis Chedid, and the grandson of the Egyptian-born French writer and poetess Andrée Chedid. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Chedid performs and records under the stage name -M-. Created as a means of overcoming his shyness on stage, the pseudonym comes from Chedid's first initial but also refers to the similar sounding French word “aime”, meaning “love”. The character -M- is a superhero, noted for having a playful nature, and recognized for his flamboyant costumes - primarily monochrome suits with slim trousers, long jackets with upward pointed collars and glasses styled into the shape of an M. Since 1997 and his first album and tour, he has been collaborating with a number of artists, both on stage and in the recording studio.

It's been quite the ride for Émilie Simon since her debut album took off back in 2003, the electronic album was critically acclaimed and went on to become a huge commercial success. Side-stepping her pared-down electronic beginnings, Simon pirouettes Mue, her sixth album, into fresh, sonic territory with lyrical reveries that sensuously saddle up to lush, organically rich string and brass arrangements. Despite writing all the songs and arrangements herself, the album still boasts a strong entourage: Sally Herbert (Bat for Lashes, Pete Doherty) conducted the string ensemble; saxophonist Gary Barnacle (The Clash, David Bowie, The Pet Shop Boys) plays in the brass ensemble; Tahiti Boy, Ian Caple, and David Kahne (Lana Del Rey, The Strokes, The Bangles) all contributed to the production; and Chris Cody (TV on the Radio) mixed the album. With a cast like this, Mue successfully combines fierce contemporary pop together with the Romantic effervescence of traditional musical ballads. The result is refreshingly powerful. Throughout, Mue boldly opens new doors with sonic arrangements that dance exclusively to the beat of ecstatic self-actualization, thereby shedding all the lies and trappings of false starts and promises by opening the windows and letting one's hair down.

Named in homage to both Iggy Pop and The Vaselines, DUM DUM GIRLSmight be the smartest band ever to put ‘60s girl group sounds through a garage rock meat grinder. Their first LP I Will Be was “a blistering half-hour of menacing, witty bubblegum pop,” (Pitchfork) and every release since has been a revelatory combination of deep musical references and pure adrenaline.

On-the-rise Brooklynites HOSPITALITY released its sophomore album Trouble earlier this year on Merge, and the record is a major leap forward artistically from the disarmingly simple indie pop of its well-received 2012 self-titled album, Trouble “makes a point of showing its listeners the difference between ‘beautiful’ and ‘cute.’ There are moments of real beauty . . . whereas other parts of this album are distinctly not easy. “I Miss Your Bones” recalls the squirmy riffs of Television.” (Pitchfork)

Brooklyn sister act TEEN—lead singer Teeny Lieberson, keyboardist Lizzie Lieberson, drummer Katherine Lieberson, and bassist Boshra AlSaadi—also put out its second full length in 2014. The Way and Color infuses their brooding pop with minimalist beats and complex harmonies inspired by D’Angelo and Erykah Badu’s classic R&B.

Since her introduction to the American marketplace in 2007 with her album Mi Niña Lola (My Little Girl Lola), Buika has experienced a meteoric rise, earning lavish praise from The New York Times, The Miami Herald, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as NPR which quickly included her in their “50 Great Voices” radio gallery. Her next release, Niña de Fuego (Fire Child) paved the way for relocation to Miami in 2011. After achieving success in Europe, her works were compiled on the 2-CD set En Mi Piel (In My Skin) to coincide with the Pedro Almodovar movie of the same name in which she appeared. Buika was nominated for a GRAMMY for best Latin Jazz album this year, for her latest album La Noche Mas Larga. Rare is the artist to garner comparisons to Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, and Cesaria Evora, but Buika has been compared to all of them. The New York Post has said, “A singer like Buika comes only once in a generation.”

While Marques Toliver seemed to burst onto the scene via the UK with an arresting television performance in 2010, and a declaration from Adele as her “new favorite artist,” his story really began many years ago in Florida. It was there he began his training in classical violinist at the age of 10, and would later enroll in music school. Keen to throw him-self into the real world of music making, Toliver took a leap of faith and traveled to New York City, where his busking in subways and working as a freelance musician, quickly gained him attention from fellow artists. Soon enough he found himself playing live and on records for the likes of Holly Miranda, Grizzly Bear, and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. After another move to London, Toliver began winning over that city’s musical landscape in similar fashion, and soon he signed to Bella Union and released his well-received debut EP Butterflies Are Not Free. Following worldwide tours, he began work on the mixtape Studying For My Ph. D, a cornucopia of music, speech, loops, and news reports from the London Riots. Through the mixtape he would also delve in to some of the themes and ideas that would eventually influence his full-length debut Land of CanAan, a work brimming with his own unique R&B and Classical music influences.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: D.I.T.C (Lord Finesse / A.G. / Diamond D / DJ Boogie Blind / Large Professor) in association with Lyricist Lounge]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/26/summerstage-presents-ditc-lord-finesse-ag-diamond-d-dj-boogie-blind-large-professor-in-association-with-lyricist-lounge http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/26/summerstage-presents-ditc-lord-finesse-ag-diamond-d-dj-boogie-blind-large-professor-in-association-with-lyricist-lounge Date: June 26, 2014

One of the most beloved hip hop crews in rap music, D.I.T.C. (an acronym for "Diggin' in the Crates") consists of veteran rappers, DJs, and producers dedicated to the true essence of rap music: original lyrics and strong beat-savvy productions. With their dedication to hip-hop purity, members Showbiz & A.G. (Andre the Giant), Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, O.C., Buckwild, and the late Big L have at least one classic album under their belts. Although they never reached the success of their multiplatinum peers, individually they became successful by maintaining their integrity and earning major respect within the rap community. Lord Finesse (born Robert Hall) is a legendary MC-turned producer who has produced tracks for Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre. He shopped his demo to various record labels and eventually dropped the first of several records, his 1990 classic Funky Technician. One of the oldest members in the D.I.T.C. crew, Diamond got his first whiff of hip hop DJing for Jazzy Jay of the Zulu Nation in 1979. In the mid-'80s, he was turntable scratching at late-night park parties, often competing with area top DJs. In 1992, this DJ, then a producer, showcased New York City's underground talent and his rap skills on his classic debut Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop. Showbiz & A.G. were the first to adopt the do-it-yourself attitude by releasing their 1992 debut EP, Can I Get a Soul Clap, practically out of the trunk of their cars. Showbiz, a name he stolen from an old Richard Pryor record, pioneered taking an instrumental and looping voices over it. His partner A.G. was known as the Bronx's "punchline" rapper. In 1999, A.G. restarted his rap career with his solo CD Dirty Version. Meanwhile, another Bronx native named Buckwild, started producing tracks around 1994. He later delivered melodic beats for rap heavyweights like Fat Joe, Notorious B.I.G., Big L, Mic Geronimo, and Big Pun. But it was his first at-bat, producing tracks for O.C.'s Word Life in 1994, that established him as a vital producer in the underground rap scene. O.C., one of hip hop's most energetic lyricists, was an up-and-coming MC before Word Life. After the album's release, he made numerous guest appearances on other D.I.T.C. members' records while maintaining a low profile. The final member of D.I.T.C. was Big L, a lyrically ferocious MC with raps deadlier than a snakebite and mannerisms cooler than the uptown pimp he claimed to be on records. Calling himself the flamboyant (meaning "rich") MC, he dropped his classic 1994 record Lifestylez ov da Poor and Dangerous on Columbia. He was gearing up for a comeback, with a second CD due for release on Rawkus, when he was slain on February 15, 1999. The crew came together later that year for a memorial concert and recorded a self-titled group record in 2000. Today, their music still stands as a living legacy in hip hop, and will continue to do so for years to come.

A sensational summer dance party featuring new live interpretations of disco, funk, soul and house classics. On the day before New York's famous Pride Festival, CLUB CLASSICS LIVE! assembles powerhouse performers to recreate the magic of legendary NYC dance clubs like Studio 54 and the Paradise Garage. Expect to dance your behind off to live renditions of songs associated with iconic DJs like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, and iconic record labels like West End, Salsoul and Casablanca. Curated and directed by Jason King, producer/scholar and host of NPR's R&B/soul streaming radio channel, CLUB CLASSICS LIVE! gathers an impressive array of headliners, including pop sensation Sam Sparro, house legends Ultra Nate and Kevin Aviance, and the ladies from the original line-ups of Chic (Norma Jean Wright, Alfa Anderson, and Luci Martin). Acclaimed dance music 'supergroup' Company Freak supplies the music as house band, along with invited guests. DJ David Depino, long associated with Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage, spins the opening set. CLUB CLASSICS LIVE! is a once-in-a-lifetime party that should not be missed.

Part soul crooner, part pop star with an ever-morphing, chameleon-like quality, Sam Sparro coasts a fine line between disarmingly earnest and chic, credible cool. He has become known not only for his distinct, scale-defying vocals and epic live shows, but also as a visual artist and style icon. In 2008 he hit the mark with his career changing single Black & Gold which received critical acclaim and shot to No.2 in the UK, No.4 in Australia and top 20 in 14 countries. Sam’s sophomore release, Return to Paradise was a play on nostalgia and “paradise garage” – a genre derived from the discotheque scene in New York in the late 70s, famous for its unique and eclectic style of disco and dance music. In 2013 Sparro released Quantum Physical: Volume One, which finds Sam digging into both his 1990’s and current 12” Vinyl collection for sonic stimulus, while lyrically addressing issues we’re seeing in our day to day lives all over the world. He's toured with the likes of Adele and Robyn, and headlined his own tour playing festivals around the world including Glastonbury and Coachella.

Ultra Naté has remained a musical chameleon, embracing a variety of sounds, from R&B/hip-hop, soul and disco to house, rock and electro-pop 25 years after sashaying onto international dance floors. In 1998 Ultra released the anthem "Free" which became an international platinum selling single and has become a dance classic. Shortly after in 1999 her smash rework of "If You Could Read My Mind" with Jocelyn Enriquez & Amber saw Ultra in the Studio 54 soundtrack and followed the crossover success. In 2013 Ultra released her eighth studio album "Hero Worship" featuring collaborations with a list of who's who in dance music - showing she's always had her finger on the pulse. A humble, hardworking legend, today Ultra continues to record tirelessly and evolve as an artist who is also songwriter, producer, DJ, label owner, club promoter and live performer - a highly sought-after darling of the international dance scene.

Legendary drag icon Kevin Aviance, who's a member of the House of Aviance, became an underground sensation in the late-'90s gay dance scene, releasing # 1 Billboard dance hits and taking his drag show on the road. Inspired largely by Grace Jones, though also citing Boy George as an influence, Aviance made a name for himself primarily in New York's thriving gay scene, affiliating himself with other dance icons like Junior Vasquez, Tony Moran, Victor Calderone and the late Peter Rauhofer. It wasn't long before novelty tracks like "Cunty," an aggressive update of "Din Da Da," the S&M-tinged "Rhythm Is My Bitch" and "Alive" which become popular club anthems that allowed him to perform throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Style, sophistication, and soul. That’s what Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, and Norma Jean Wright brought to CHIC as the group’s original lead vocalists. Alongside producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, and drummer Tony Thompson, these legendary ladies made CHIC synonymous with infectious hooks and timeless grooves. They collected a wall of gold and platinum albums, fueling the charts with hits that dominated clubs and airwaves across the globe. To the delight of their dedicated fans, Alfa, Luci, and Norma Jean have reunited as Anderson, Martin & Wright to celebrate a legacy that encompasses some of the most groundbreaking music ever recorded. With new music in the works, Alfa, Luci, and Norma Jean are ready to deliver their classy, high-energy, roof-raising show to audiences all around the world. For these Former Ladies of CHIC, the good times are just beginning.

DJ Andre Collins grew up in Bronx, New York. His career spans over three decades and bears witness to the phenomenon called “House Music.” He has played and learned from the industry elites, such as Nicky Siano and Tee Scott. Andre was the resident DJ at the legendary “WAREHOUSE” and had guest spots at Better Days, The Nickel Bar, Midtown 43, The Lenox Lounge and Karma. Andre’s brand of Universal Love of House Music has been heard internationally in Japan, Europe and the Caribbean. He is known for his creative mixing of music with pulsating vibes and lyrical content. DJ Andre is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jessie Jackson, Maya Angelou and President Barack Obama and often incorporates their messages in his music. He takes his Universal Love of House Music to the radio waves, every Friday on WHCR/90.3 FM-The Voice of Harlem.

<![CDATA[SummerStage in Association with Blue Note Jazz Festival Presents: Jon Batiste and Stay Human / Hypnotic Brass Ensemble]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/29/summerstage-blue-note-jazz-festival-presents-jon-batiste-and-stay-human http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/29/summerstage-blue-note-jazz-festival-presents-jon-batiste-and-stay-human Date: June 29, 2014

Jon Batiste was born in New Orleans into a family whose deep musical heritage is part of the inspiration for the HBO series Treme, in which he has appeared. Over the last decade he has forged his own artistic path by indelibly fusing himself within the fabric of New York City culture. After attending the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) Batiste moved to New York and graduated from the Juilliard School earning a master’s degree in jazz and classical piano. He has collaborated with the likes of Prince, Cassandra Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Buffet, Eve, Lenny Kravitz, ?uestlove, and Asher Roth.

He has also recorded extensively, most recently putting out the EP MY NY with Stay Human in 2011, a set that was recorded live in the Manhattan subway system. Social Music (Razor & Tie), is the new album by Batiste and his irrepressible musical collective, Stay Human. Both the title of the album and the name of the band are telling. “For me, what we’re doing is a calling, bringing people to an understanding that loving one another is how we are called to be,” he says. Now a quartet (with Batiste on piano, vocals and melodica, which he has renamed the harmonaboard; Eddie Barbash on alto saxophone; Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba; and Joe Saylor on drums), Stay Human has evolved over the past eight years, running the spectrum from a jazz trio to a quintet to a big band with horns.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family of 8 blood brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter/composer Phil Cohran (Sun Ra, co-founder of AACM, mentor to EARTH WIND & FIRE), who were raised on the south-side of Chicago under the rigorous training methods their musically talented parents. From an early age it was clear the brothers of Hypnotic were born for the stage, they grew at the feet of music giants such as Louis Satterfield, Sun Ra, & Pete Cosey while at the same time performing as children along with father at local showcases. By 1999, a few of the older members returned from music scholarships at college to find their younger brothers playing on the streets of Chicago to rave success. They subsequently formed the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and after finding a drummer, began to collectively write original tunes in order to create a record with their very own sound "The Flipside". Initially their only aim was to bring horns and live instrumentation back to mainstream music, but after taking to the streets of United States' major cities HBE enjoyed the independent success of over 65,000 units sold direct to fans and also attracted the attention of Kanye West mentor NO ID. In 2003, Hypnotic cut the horns for his current production "Metal Lungees" that featured on Wu-Tang MC Ghostface Killah's "Pretty Toney" album for Def Jam Island. At the same time HBE had begun to record & self-produce their sophomore effort "Jupiter", and when a Def Jam Records production deal went sour the band moved to NYC to promote and sale their latest project solo.

A longtime member of the Boston folk scene, Alastair Moock turned his attention to family music after the birth of his twin daughters in 2006. His latest album, Singing Our Way Through: Songs for the World’s Bravest Kids, won Golden Medal Awards from both the Parent’s Choice Foundation and NAPPA, was named a Best Kids’ Album Pick by People Magazine, was voted the #3 Album of the Year by the Fids and Kamily music industry poll, and just received a Grammy nomination in 2014. Moock’s zany sense of humor, his gravely voice, his original style and irresistible warmth and energy make this a must see way for families to celebrate summer this year.
