As a successful tropical music vocalist, the young Ramon “Moncho” Rivera has spent a lifetime singing praises to his famed uncle, Ismeal Rivera. After all, Ismeal Rivera was the reigning king of soneros of his generation, and since his passing, he's been one of the most revered figures in the history of salsa in Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America. In Mocho’s new album, Mi Regalo En Navidad, he follows in his uncle’s footsteps as he celebrates the ‘tis to be merry season just like the oldest Rivera did over 40 years ago. One of the highlights of the young Moncho Rivera’s music is that he remains faithful to his uncle’s unique and hugely popular singing style, one of the few who still does today.

<![CDATA[“COMEDY CENTRAL Stars Under the Stars” hosted by Gabriel Iglesias and featuring performances by Adam DeVine / John Mulaney / Jeff Ross / Amy Schumer with an Opening Set from Dan Soder]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/26/comedy-central-stars-under-the-stars-hosted-by-gabriel-iglesias-and-featuring-performances-by-adam-devine-anthony-jeselnik-nick-kroll-jeff-ross-amy-schumer http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/26/comedy-central-stars-under-the-stars-hosted-by-gabriel-iglesias-and-featuring-performances-by-adam-devine-anthony-jeselnik-nick-kroll-jeff-ross-amy-schumer Date: June 26, 2013

Gabriel Iglesias has been described as a witty, electrifying, and talented performer who has the ability to consistently deliver a uniquely hilarious comedy experience. His first two DVD specials, “Hot & Fluffy” and “I’m Not Fat…I’m Fluffy,” have sold well over 1 million copies. “Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-Up Revolution“ premiered on COMEDY CENTRAL in October 2011 and stars Iglesias, who serves as host and curator of the featured comedians. For the series, Iglesias was individually nominated for a 2012 ALMA Award in the category: Favorite TV Reality, Variety, or Comedy Personality or Act. In April 2013, “Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy,” a supersized two-night world premiere, debuted on COMEDY CENTRAL.

Adam DeVine is best known for his role as “Adam DeMamp” on COMEDY CENTRAL’s hit comedy “Workaholics.” His sketch-comedy group, Mail Order Comedy, made up of DeVine, Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck, has headlined sold-out shows all over the nation. All four members also star on, write and produce “Workaholics.” DeVine recently starred in the Universal comedy “Pitch Perfect” and can be seen in the upcoming cult favorite “Arrested Development” on Netflix. In addition, COMEDY CENTRAL recently announced “Adam DeVine’s House Party.” The eight episode stand-up series will spotlight 24 of DeVine’s favorite up-and-coming comedians and is slated to premiere on the channel this fall. which he takes on the latest bizarre news and pop culture happenings ripped straight from the headlines.

Since the release of his 2012 COMEDY CENTRAL broadcast and DVD/digital release of his new stand-up special “New in Town,” John Mulaney is poised to become somewhat more recognizable after being vaguely familiar to the millions who watch “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and more. A wizened comedy veteran at 30 years of age, Mulaney began his career in New York’s East Village as part of the two-man “Oh Hello Show” with comedian Nick Kroll. He has since performed everywhere from Ireland, to Australia to Grand Isle, Nebraska. He’ll kind of perform anywhere. He was named one of Variety's 10 “Comics to Watch” in 2008--the same year he began working at “Saturday Night Live” where he's since appeared as a Weekend Update correspondent and co-created such characters as “Stefon” with Bill Hader.

Jeff Ross is the host of COMEDY CENTRAL’s weekly half-hour topical series “The Burn with Jeff Ross“ and picks up where the Roasts leave off. Ross and a panel of guest comedians skewer the week’s pop culture topics in-studio, and hit the streets on the “Roaster Coaster” to take aim at “Public Enemies” like drunks, hipsters and zombie lovers. In addition, Ross has headlined the last nine COMEDY CENTRAL Roasts and roasted the likes of Roseanne, Charlie Sheen, Joan Rivers, Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff, and Donald Trump. As a stand-up comic, Ross has appeared on dozens of TV shows, including “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Conan,” “Last Call with Carson Daly,” “The View,” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.” He also continues to perform regularly for American men and women in uniform stationed all over the world.

Amy Schumer stars in COMEDY CENTRAL’s newest series, “Inside Amy Schumer.” Through a series of scripted vignettes, stand-up comedy, and man-on-the-street interviews, Schumer explores topics revolving around sex, relationships, and the general clusterf*ck that is life. Ten episodes begin on Tuesday, April 30 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Schumer’s other television credits include the one-hour stand-up special, “Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff” (COMEDY CENTRAL’s second-highest rated special of 2012); one of the featured comedians on the “COMEDY CENTRAL Roast of Roseanne,” following her breakout performance on the “COMEDY CENTRAL Roast of Charlie Sheen;” and appearances in FX’s “Louie” and Season 2 of HBO’s “Girls.” In 2011, she filmed the feature “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley and “Price Check,” an independent feature opposite Parker Posey which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

In May, Dan Soder debuted his first half-hour stand-up special “Dan Soder: The Half Hour” on COMEDY CENTRAL and is a new cast member on MTV2's "Guy Code." He has also appeared on COMEDY CENTRAL’s "Live at Gotham," “Conan” and on Opie and Anthony.

The legendary South African choral group, still led by its indomitable founder Joseph Shabalala, first won international fame through its work on Paul Simon’s 1986 album, Graceland, but the group has been active for more than half a century. Today they are the living embodiment of Zulu song, and a mobile academy of South African culture. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” (Paul Simon) With the soulful singer and guitarist Aurelio Martinez, the standard bearer of Garifuna music and the first black member of Honduras’ National Congress.

Double Dutch Dreamz invites the community to “Get Your Jump On!” Join in the creatively artful fun of jumping double and single ropes. Share delightful neighborhood narratives and recollections of rhythms and rhymes with fast moving feet that rock to the beat.

SummerStage joins Canada Day International and BlackBerry in celebrating Canada’s 146th birthday, presenting a free showcase of top Canadian talent.

When electro-rock sensation Lights first hit the music scene in 2008, she was just a songwriter with a synth and a dream. The following year, she won the Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy) for Best New Artist, on the strength of her debut EP alone. She has since released the gold certified and Juno nominated albums The Listening and Siberia. Her latest release, Siberia Acoustic, is an album which strips down her normally synth and electronic-heavy music to the bare bones, showcasing her strong songwriting and soft melodies.

With countless awards to their credit, Joel Plaskett and his band The Emergency, have performed thousands of tour dates, and completed numerous recording and producing projects. Joel is quickly becoming one of the most innovative and prolific artists on the scene today. In 2009, Plaskett released his hugely successful triple record, Three, which garnered overwhelming media response and caught the attention of international audiences. Where Three is a thoughtful solo record that offers up gems that range from pure Pop to soul stirring Folk, Scrappy Happiness, Plaskett's most recent album which debuted in 2012, is an epic melodic Rock record powered by stellar songs and a sense of urgency. Whether it’s touring worldwide with his band or more intimate shows as a solo artist, Plaskett consistently excites and inspires his audiences with his one of a kind music.

The band that became Spirit of the West began as a Folk trio called Evesdropper in Vancouver 30 years ago. After churning out 13 albums, the group has achieved a status as one of the most beloved artists in Canadian history. They have been inducted into the Halls of Fame / Lifetime Achievement Categories by the Western Canadian Music Association and the Society of Composers and Music Publishers of Canada. In a CBC survey, their song, “Home for a Rest” was voted the 22nd greatest Canadian song of all time, and in a similar vote in Vancouver's Tyee magazine it was placed as 2nd greatest Canadian song of all time. It has many times been called “Canada’s unofficial national anthem.” With four gold and three platinum albums to their credit, Spirit of the West recently produced Spirituality, a double CD album that looks back at the first 25 years of their career.

Since its formation, Rock Steady Crew has adapted all aspects of Hip-Hop, from DJ's to Emcee's, and from Writers to B-Boys & B-Girls. More recently, Rock Steady Crew received a VH1 Hip-Hop Honors award, performed on ABC's, Dancing With The Stars, and also had CNN coverage of their 35th anniversary.

Javelin brings a sound collage “like an otherworldly radio station based in some crate-digger bunker where genre distinctions are a distant memory” (Pitchfork) to the party, and the Sierra Leonean Janka Nabay, the undisputed king of Bubu music, starts things off on a festive, frenetic note.

Big Star's Third is a full performance of the iconic album by an astonishing who's who of rock music featuring famed vocalists including Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Marshall Crenshaw, Pete Yorn, Reeve Carney (Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark), Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) and Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond), supported by an all-star band including Mike Mills (R.E.M.) on bass; Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), Chris Stamey (The dB's), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star) and Richard Lloyd (Television) on guitar; Dale Baker (Sixpence None the Richer) playing percussion; Charles Cleaver on keys; Django Haskins (The Old Ceremony), Brett Harris and Skylar Gudasz on harmony and guitar; and original Big Star member Jody Stephens on drums, all backed with a twenty-piece chamber orchestra including famed cellist Jane Scarpantoni and the Uptown Horns. In addition, the concert will feature a selection of earlier songs, including the much-hailed “September Gurls” and “In The Streets” (which was used as the theme of the popular TV sitcom “That ‘70s Show,” performed by Cheap Trick).

Originally released in 1978, Third was written and recorded when the band was primarily a studio project consisting of Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens of the legendary Memphis rock band Big Star. The original members drew on the musical styles of British Invasion groups while adding their own dark, cathartic themes to Carl Marsh's groundbreaking string arrangements. The album, while long out of print, inspired the alternative rock bands of the 80s and 90s via shared mixtapes passed hand to hand. The Replacements famously released a song “Alex Chilton” that paid tribute to his songwriting genius. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck said, “Big Star served as a Rosetta Stone for a whole generation of musicians.” Third is included on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. Experience this classic of late 70s power pop through the prism of a one-of-a-kind collective of immensely talented fans of one of the most influential American rock bands ever.

Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me - the first documentary ever made about the legendary band opens July 3rd at the IFC Center.

Joe Bataan, called the “King of Latin Soul,” was influenced by the melodic sounds of Doo-Wop and the energy of Latin music that were the hallmarks of his Spanish Harlem neighborhood. The famed Fania Records found this intersection of sound and culture enticing and propelled Bataan to become a major force in the “Latin Boogaloo” music scene with hits like “Gypsy Woman” and “My Cloud.”

Felix Hernandez is in the business of remembering the good ol’ days. Hernandez’s wildly popular radio show, Rhythm Revue, takes on a life of its own at New York’s Roseland, where three thousand disciples regularly come to hear Fernandez spin the sounds of the past and boogie down. Felix Hernandez will rock the crowd once again at SummerStage again with his mix of soul, Motown, funk, salsa and disco dance classics. Bring your dancing shoes.

George Lamond became an instant star for his first Freestyle album, “Bad of the Heart," which yielded the hit single with the same name and as well as “Without You” and “Look Into My Eyes.” This paved the way for other popular albums in both the Freestyle genre as well as modern approaches to traditional Latin music, including “Where Does That Leave Love” and “Oye Mi Canto.”

DJ Lucho’s early exposure to the harmonious rhythms of Latin music in his Harlem neighborhood nurtured an innate talent that propelled him to become one of the most gifted DJs and producers in the music industry. His interaction with different genres of music has allowed him to develop a unique and versatile style, which was guided by his deep appreciation for various cultures and their musical influences.

The Grascals are among the most beloved and acclaimed bands on today’s bluegrass scene, having won SPBGMA’s Bluegrass Band of the Year award in 2010, the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2005 and earning its Entertainer of the Year honor for both 2006 and 2007. Vocally, the trio of Terry Eldredge, Jamie Johnson and Terry Smith are tighter than ever, cutting loose on driving solo vocals and soaring trios with equal fire and passion. As an instrumental unit, The Grascals have never sounded sharper, with mandolin ace Danny Roberts, fiddler Jeremy Abshire and banjo player Kristin Scott Benson leading the charge. As a result, their cutting-edge modern bluegrass is delivered with a deep knowledge of, and admiration for, the work of the music’s founding fathers. Timely yet timeless, The Grascals make music that is entirely relevant to the here and now, yet immersed in traditional values of soul and musicianship.

Joy Kills Sorrow brings together an eclectic mix of musicians who each have classical and/or jazz conservatory training, though collectively, they ambitiously utilize their years of study to hone a new acoustic territory yet discovered by many of today’s top artists. It’s an amalgamation of lamenting music of the heartland, singular stories of heartache and laughter, beautiful string arrangements, and five musicians who grew up listening to indie-rock, jazz, and pop music that churn out impressive tunes with an incredibly contemporary sensibility. This Boston-based string band favors a more unpredictable approach relying on musical chemistry and improvisation. Hence the title of their sophomore album, This Unknown Science. All of the members have been touted as virtuosos, and they effortlessly hunt for unexpected outcomes and new discoveries.

Presented as part of Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited, a seven-month, citywide retrospective featuring theater, poetry, music concerts and humanities events curated and produced by MAPP International Productions through a major partnership of 17 cultural and educational institutions

Sekou Sundiata was a prolific New York City poet, performer and teacher who articulated a keen observation of sociopolitical issues and deftly wove them into the body of his work. Known to frequently collaborate with and be inspired by dynamic women throughout his career, SummerStage's longstoryshort: Remixed part of the city-wide Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited retrospective curated and produced by MAPP International Productions, celebrates his idea of the influential female muse through the performances of three commanding female artists: Nona Hendryx, Sandra St. Victor and Toshi Reagon, all known for their powerful voices as well as their socially relevant lyrics. These artists will perform their own work as well as selections from Sundiata’s last CD, longstoryshort. The show will also be punctuated throughout with performances from cutting edge poets performing some of Sundiata's classic works and new pieces inspired by his artistic legacy.

Nona Hendryx’s legendary career spans six decades of sound and style evolution. Longtime Hendryx fans know her as one of the founding members of the Doo-Wop girl group, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles. When the British invasion of Rock & Roll took over, the Bluebelles grew afros and reinvented themselves as the iconic Funk group, Labelle, which racked up three gold albums and a #1 worldwide platinum hit with the single, “Lady Marmalade” before disbanding in 1977. Hendryx fans would welcome the split, as she embarked upon an impressive solo career, spanning eight albums, several top ten hits and a GRAMMY nomination. Her albums remained edgy; provocative and full of double entendres, with hits including “Bustin’ Out” and “Why Should I Cry?”. In 2012, Hendryx released Mutatis Mutandis, a CD that has both politically and socially relevant lyrics wrapped in funky grooves, soulful vocals, and driven by rock charged rhythms.

Recognized for her multi-faceted artistry and vocal prowess, singer-songwriter Sandra St. Victor has been captivating audiences with her fusion of R&B, Rock, Gospel and Jazz for over two decades. First as a member of the innovative trio, The Family Stand, who's 1990 release, Chain included the international hit, “Ghetto Heaven;” then as a solo soulstress via her albums, Mack Diva Saves The World and Gemini: Both Sides. As a songwriter, St. Victor has co-written with the best, including Prince, Chaka Khan and The Temptations, earning her 2 GRAMMY Nominations. Via timeless songwriting, moving performances and a heart wrenching duet with Curtis Mayfield released on his final recording, New World Order, St. Victor has become established as a barrier-breaking musical trendsetter whose unique artistry puts her in a category of her very own.

Toshi Reagon, a singer-songwriter guitarist, has moved audiences of all kinds with her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to Rock, Blues, R&B, Country, Folk, Spirituals and Funk. Reagon is a one-woman celebration of all that's dynamic, progressive and uplifting in American music. The New York Times described her blend as “...a love of mixing things up...[her] vocal style ranges from a dirty blues moan to a gospel shout to an ethereal croon.” Her live performances, in particular, aren't just accessible; they're irresistible. Some of Reagon’s proudest accomplishments include playing at Madison Square Garden, and the White House in front of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Reagon was also one of several women honored by the National Women's History Project for “amazing intelligence, talent, courage and tenacity [that testify] to the myriad ways that generations of women have moved history forward.”

Presented by Socrates Sculpture Park and AT&T, in collaboration with Film Forum and Rooftop Films, Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food.

Outdoor Cinema 2013 includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. The festival kicks off on July 3rd with a new American film to welcome Independence Day weekend: Our Nixon, a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane, first debuted in March at SXSW and to be released in theaters in July 2013. Outdoor Cinema 2013 features eight international titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States – selected by Karen Cooper, Director, and Mike Maggiore, Programmer and Publicist, Film Forum, and Dan Nuxoll, Program Director, and Mark Elijah Rosenberg, Artistic Director, Rooftop Films.
In addition to the films, which are presented in their original language (with English subtitles), each evening will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the film. Pre-screening performances begin at 7:00pm and films begin at sunset (weather permitting). From 6pm-8pm, we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.
Admission is free, and the evening’s food and performance line-up is announced the week prior.

Throughout Richard Nixon's presidency, three of his top White House aides obsessively documented their experiences with Super 8 home movie cameras. Young, idealistic, and dedicated, they had no idea that a few years later they'd all be in prison. Our Nixon is an all-archival documentary presenting those home movies for the first time, along with other rare footage, creating an intimate and complex portrait of the Nixon presidency as never seen before. Join SummerStage as we head to the South Bronx, the birthplace of Hip-Hop to celebrate the connection between graffiti art and the media it inspires. THE POINT CDC and City Lore have joined us to present a full day of music, film screenings, panel discussions and live painting!

This third part of THE POINT CDC and City Lore’s "Mambo to Hip-Hop" series takes a closer look at the connection between the modern graffiti movement and the media that has proliferated from this movement. From the photographs and documentary films depicting the artists and styles of the early days of Hip-Hop, to the current use of new media and big budget films to document the scene; graffiti and film are inextricably tied together in creating the global phenomenon that exists today and providing artists of various genres a voice. The panel discussion will include famed aerosol art collective, TATS Cru and early writer Crash One addressing the history and future of both of these artistic movement moderated by acclaimed hip hop journalist Bonz Malone. Screenings of films throughout the afternoon, including a showing of the feature length TATS Cru documentary “The Mural Kings,” will be accompanied by live painting and live DJ sets throughout the day by DJ FredOnes.

She & Him consists of the pairing of Zooey Deschanel and M.Ward. For 6 years, She & Him have been taking the indie world by storm as they churn out hits for the world to hear. This unlikely pairing has had their music skyrocket to the top of “The Billboard 200,” reaching as high as #1 for “Top Independent Albums” for 2011 and 2012. The success of She & Him’s first album, Volume One, came out of left field, as Deschanel and Ward’s seemingly unlikely pairing—the effervescent actress-singer and the sought-after yet self-effacing guitarist—proved to sound absolutely right. While Deschanel writes the music for the duo, and Ward produces and arranges the pieces, both artists share a great love for incorporating harmonies in all of their tracks.

With John Peel as an early champion, Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having over the years built up a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia. Their 2006 album, Let’s Get Out of This Country (2006), was to prove pivotal for the band, taking them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights. “You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else,” stated All Music Guide in a familiar glowing review.

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents Global Family Day, a day dedicated to engaging children and their families through engaging performances! This family affair will awaken the kid in all of us through interactive performances from around the world and around the corner. Contemporary circus performers, musicians, dancers, and super cool activity stations make for a great afternoon in the park!

The Carpetbag Brigade Physical Theater Company is joining forces with the Colombian performing arts company, Nemcatacoa Teatro to present a cross cultural collaboration built and rehearsed in both countries over the last three years. Specializing in acrobatic stilt walking and street theater spectacle, both companies will be performing works from their diverse repertoires as well as “Dios de la Adrenalina” a groundbreaking, genre bending cross-cultural collaboration between the two international street theater companies that was designed to be shared in open air spaces outside of traditional theatrical venues. Featuring a synthesis of two distinct musical groups, Hojarasca Andina from Colombia playing contemporary music on traditional Andean instruments and Verbo•Bala from Arizona mixing spoken word and electronic music alongside of acrobatic stilts, butoh dance, contact improvisation and physical theater, this will be a visual feast for the eyes.

Elizabeth Mitchell, a GRAMMY nominated recording artist has been recording and performing music for children and families since 1998 when, during her time as an assistant teacher, she found that music was a common language that all her students could share. You Are My Flower, her first album, was recorded in one magical afternoon. Her next album, You Are My Sunshine was released following the birth of her daughter, Storey. In 2006 came You Are My Little Bird which was voted Best Children’s Album that year by the critics of Amazon.com and garnered generous critical praise. Her most recent release is an album called Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie, released as part of the celebration of the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie in 2012. She records and performs with her extended family band You Are My Flower, which includes her husband Daniel Littleton and their eleven year old daughter, Storey.

Natural Expression Rhythm Band is known as one of the best “Engine Rooms” in the English speaking Caribbean community. The “Engine Room” is the backbone of percussion that sweetens all Steelband and Calypso music and incorporates tire irons, graters, cowbells, triangles, and much more to give it a unique sound. Natural Expression Rhythm Band is comprised of 15 to 25 veteran Caribbean percussionists, who have been playing together since 2007 and have won a myriad awards.

The professional, neo-folklore ASE Dance Theater Collective is a performance group that specializes in dance theater from the African Diaspora which works to conceptualize ideas in the human experience. The Brooklyn based group is comprised of dancers, vocalists, freestyle dancers, spoken word artists and musicians, and dedicates itself to preserving the past, present, and future of the African presence in the “New World.” ASE successfully strives to link modern dance, original vernacular movement, and traditional dance theater.

Since its inception in 1989, Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy has been dedicated to supporting the creative, educational, and vocational development of youth of African descent in Brooklyn and surrounding communities. The organization’s name comes from the West African Yoruba word “ifetayo" meaning “love is enough for joy" and captures Ifetayo’s approach to empowering youth, studying culture through the arts, and redefining community. The Ifetayo Youth Ensemble (IYE) is an award-winning performance group, recognized for their combination of artistic excellence and exploration of social issues. IYE creates high-caliber original, socially relevant, and interdisciplinary performance works.

Nemcatacoa Teatro, from Bogota, Colombia, presents Landscape Re-Invention Society. A mobile spectacle on stilts that intervenes in the streets of any place with acrobatic language and live music. Silent figures move through the streets, plazas, passageways and corners of any place. Their bodies explore the details of the architecture to reinvent it. Subtle music serves as a thread between the pedestrians and this mobile society which will create images that fit into the space and its context. Ecstatic images that can go from heartbreaking to hopeful. A society open to a dialog with whoever lives there, a poetic-visual dialog in which reflection and silence acquire a different value than usual. The unity of color and movement are part of the language of the Landscape Reinvention Society, which passes by like a flock of birds.

A Puerto Rican rapper from Brooklyn who built a buzz with his series of rhyme marathons entitled "125 Grams," Joell Ortiz eventually signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. Ortiz earned initial attention with his no-frills attitude and rhyming prowess, being featured in critical polls in magazines like XXL and The Source. While working on his debut for Aftermath, Ortiz released a collection that is centered around his dense, rhyme-based work, The Brick: Bodega Chronicles, to act as a lead-up to his more "official" debut. Ortiz later joined Slaughterhouse, a Hip-Hop group consisting of rappers Crooked I, Joe Budden, and Royce da 5'9".

DJ Raff and Latin Bitman are teaming up for RVSB, the debut collaboration from two of the most creative minds in Latin Electronica, which was released on March 19th of this year. Pushing the boundaries of bass heavy Hip-Hop and high-energy percussive beats, RVSB lives on the cutting edge of electronic dance music, with elements of trap, juke and futuristic house. Both originally from Chile, a hot bed of new Latin American Pop, Latin Bitman and DJ Raff’s critically-acclaimed solo albums have long been crowd favorites, recently debuting at #1 on the World Music Charts at tastemaker station KEXP (Seattle).

DJ Kool Herc is considered by many to be the “The Founder of Hip-Hop Culture.” In the early stages of Hip-Hop music, he brought his sound system to block parties in the Bronx and began playing the brief rhythmic sections of records which would become known as “breaks.” Using the two-turntable set-up of the disco DJs, Kool Herc’s style led to the use of two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing, using hard Funk, Rock, and records with Latin percussion, formed the basis of Hip-Hop music. DJ Kool Herc’s music along with his announcements to his dancers, called B-Boys and B-Girls, helped pave the way to what everyone now knows as Hip-Hop.

As one of the best MCs in the world during the past decade, very few MCs have matched Fat Joe's longevity. There are only a handful of rap artists who can claim the commercial success and street credibility of the Terror Squad Don. Throughout his career, Fat Joe has obviously been cut from the cloth of supreme mic holders. He’s held his own on songs with modern day legends such as Big Pun and Big L, the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Grand Puba and one of the greatest collection of Masters of Ceremonies to ever assemble, D.I.T.C. Fat Joe has sold over two million albums, discovered some of the best artist in the rap game (Big Pun, Remy Ma, etc.), been nominated for two Grammy awards, and has achieved commercial and critical success.

One of the biggest names in Latin American Hip-Hop, Cuarto Poder built a reputation in Venezuela as leading MCs before releasing their US debut album In Tha House, which features their signature “Criollo Rap" style, fusing street lyrics with folk verses and traditional rhythms. Most recently, Cuarto Poder had the music featured on the MTV series, Washington Heights. Since forming on the gritty streets of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, they’ve shared the stage with Latin America’s top acts, from Calle 13 to Tego Calderon and Gustavo Cerati to Molotov.

Los Rakas is comprised of cousins Raka Rich & Raka Dun, pioneering Panamanians by way of the Bay Area on the frontier of a new Latin urban sound. Known for their fresh mix of Hip-Hop, Plena, Reggae and Dancehall music with both Spanish and English lyricism, Los Rakas represent the cutting edge of Pan-American flows. Taking their name from the Panamanian word “Rakataka” – a negative slur used to describe someone from the ghetto – Los Rakas have set out to both inspire fellow “Rakas” by empowering them to become successful despite their circumstances, turning the current Latin Hip-Hop world on its head. In 2012, Los Rakas released their EP, Raka Love, touring nationally and internationally. They are set to introduce their next project, a double album, Soy Raka presents Los Rakas: El Negrito Dun Dun & Ricardo, later this year.

For the 15th anniversary of Outdoor Cinema, Film Forum joins Socrates Sculpture Park for the first time to become primary programmers of the eight-week international film festival.

July 10: A SCREAMING MAN (CHAD)
2010, 92 mins. Written & Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun.
Ironically titled, this drama set in Chad follows the fortunes of Adam, a former swimming champion, now a 60-year-old “pool man” at a tourist hotel. Tensions between Adam and his grown son are exacerbated when the former loses his job to the younger man and his fragile world begins to crumble. The country’s endless civil war plays a decisive role in defining the two men’s psychic reality in this smart, subtle, and deeply moving story of modern Africa. Winner, Jury Prize, 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Curated by Film Forum.

Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Lila Downs embraces and highlights her origins in the U.S. and Mexico. Downs' roots have always been an important aspect of her music, as well as the topics of political and social justice, immigration, and transformation, all embedded in the human condition. For over a decade, Lila Downs has traversed the planet, bringing her dramatic and highly unique reinvention of traditional Mexican music and original compositions fused with Blues, Jazz, Soul, and African roots. Downs has long been recognized by the music industry, receiving a Latin GRAMMY for the 2004 release, Una Sangre and a GRAMMY nomination for 2008’s Shake Away, which was also named one of the top ten albums of that year by WOMEX, the leading world music organization. In 2012, Downs released her album, Pecados Y Milagros, which won a Latin GRAMMY for Best Folk Album and a GRAMMY award in 2013 for Best Regional Mexican Album.

Known as the long-time live voice of Thievery Corporation, Natalia Clavier’s new solo album, Lumen was produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Adrian Quesada. With a sultry mix of Jazz-inspired vocals, electronic textures and global influences, Lumen further develops the sound Clavier cultivated while recording and touring with both Thievery Corporation and her husband, Argentinean singer-songwriter Federico Aubele.

Born and raised in Lima, Pamela Rodriguez has always been enticed by other paths of life, territories and cities. In her lyrics, Rodriguez intertwines topics of love and indifference with her own experiences to create melodies out of feminine intuition and the instinctive need to interpret reality through a song. In 2006, Rodriguez was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY Award as “Best New Artist” and in 2012 received a second nomination for “Best Contemporary Pop Album”. Rodriguez has recorded three albums, with her most recent, Reconocer, being released in 2011. In her latest album, Rodriguez reflects on her recent experiences and tells her audience about exile, freedom, love and maternity, and her constant changes of countries and the sounds between here and there. The album has fresh sounds, Indie Pop and Alternative music influences, as it showcases Rodriguez’s ability to incorporate different themes and styles into her lyrics to create a musical masterpiece.

The voice of pirate radio in the mid-90s and a native Angeleno, Raul Campos has come from the underground to represent the eclectic airwaves of KCRW in Los Angeles. Campos brings his audience to a place where funky beats, underground rhythms, heartbroken guitars, Latin-loving and daring melodies live. Campos also continues his work behind the scenes as a remixer, putting his special spin on tracks by famed artists such as Femi Kuti, Jill Scott and many more.

2013 marks Hudson River Park’s RiverRocks 15th Season. RiverRocks is among New York City’s quintessential free outdoor summer concert series and features established and breaking artists performing at the beautiful Pier 84.

New Orleans’ Generationals have established themselves as the go-to band for sunny pop songs influenced by music of the British Invasion, Soul Stax and Wall of Sound production.

Like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Waits, Sallie Ford has established herself as one of the most powerful female voices in indie rock, mining that sweet spot between modern and vintage. On their new album, Untamed Beast, the band creates a powerful statement on finding freedom through defying conformity. According to Sallie: ”rock n roll isn’t a genre, its energy.”

Julieta Venegas is a renowned Mexican singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. With over six released albums to date, Venegas has sold more than 9 million copies of her albums worldwide. The Washington Post describes Venegas as a different sort of artist. “While many of her songs will entice you to get up and dance, there is also an intimacy to her work that comes through even for those whose Spanish doesn't go much beyond “hola.” Throughout the years, Venegas has received myriad nominations and recognitions, including winning several GRAMMY Awards and five Latin GRAMMY Awards. With Moments, Venegas’ 6th album, released in March of 2013, it is evident that this she is continuing her dominance in the Latin music world.

Carla Morrison is a Mexican Alternative-Pop songstress with international recognition who released her debut, self-produced EP back in 2010. Only two years later, she won 2 Latin GRAMMY Awards – Best Alternative Album and Best Alternative Song – for her most recent and most personal album yet, Dejenme Llorar (Let Me Cry) released in 2012. Her angelically peaceful and lamenting voice brings listeners on an emotional rollercoaster with moments of both heartbreak and uplifting hope, which touch both their ears and their hearts. MTV Iggy has taken notice of Morrison’s captivating presence when she stands on stage with just her pure voice and a guitar, boastings that her “no-frills approach to music-making comes easy for an artist like Morrison, who has talent to spare.”

Named by TIME Magazine as an artist “poised for US stardom" Alex Anwandter brings together 80's-influenced dance music and emotional songwriting, presented with an engaging live performance full of intimacy and showmanship. His solo debut Rebeldes features poignant lyrics that tug at heart-strings, while crisp percussion and upbeat basslines keep the body moving. The album has been featured everywhere from PerezHilton.com to Vice, MTV Iggy and Billboard, with NPR celebrating his music video homage to “Paris is Burning” for its courageous message of equality, love, and acceptance.

Forming in the Bronx streets during the 1960s, The Ghetto Brothers uplifted their NYC community through Hip-Hop music, helping to eradicate pushers from their neighborhood, cleaning up parks and garbage-strewn empty lots, and enlisting interest in community involvement. Soon after they formed, The Ghetto Brothers quickly cooked up a potent, NYC-flavored musical stew that gained the attention of local record stores with their soulful Hip-Hop songs. In 1972, The Ghetto Brothers released their debut album, Power Fuerza¸ which was a beautiful, innocent audio snapshot by three brothers, their friends, and a powerful gang of musical energy. In 2011, The Ghetto Brothers released Power Fuerza – Deluxe Reissue, which NPR describes as “a time capsule of sorts, but its message hasn't dulled with the intervening years: Choose guitars over guns, and let music be your mayhem.”

From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale is an hour-long documentary that tells the story about the creative life of the South Bronx. Beginning with the Puerto Rican migration and the adoption of Cuban rhythms to create the New York Salsa sound and continuing with the fires that destroyed the neighborhood but not the creative spirit of its people; the film chronicles the rise of Hip-Hop from the ashes. A charismatic reflection on the power of a neighborhood’s music, the film effortlessly chronicles the evolution from Mambo to Hip-Hop; which has taken the world’s pop culture by storm. The documentary, directed by Henry Chalfant features interviews with numerous famed musicians and dancers that showcases the history and diversity of Hip-Hop's reach.

Fanfare Ciocarlia is one of the world's greatest live bands, their energy and ingenuity having won them fans from Melbourne to Memphis, Tokyo to Toulouse. The National Geographic has said “the music of Fanfare Ciocarlia pulls not only from the band's homeland but also rhythms from Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia to make a complete Balkan stew.” The Romanian group’s breakneck speed, technical chops, ripping rhythms and sweet and sour horns is quite different from any other brass band on earth. Having released eight albums, several of which have topped the European World Music charts, Fanfare Ciocarlia has performed at concerts around the world, showcasing their unique style and unconventional ways. Put simply: nobody does it better, harder, faster, funkier than Fanfare Ciocarlia.

Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian Bhangra rhythms with elements of Jazz, Go-Go, brass Funk, and Hip-Hop. Although Red Baraat has performed at prestigious venues such as the White House and the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, their bread and butter remains the sweaty clubs, festivals, packed performing arts centers, and college auditoriums that have kept the band on the road all over the world. Their new album, Shruggy Ji, debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts and received critical praise from NPR to the Wall Street Journal.

DJ Joro-Boro is a crunk charlatan from the Balkans, who plays and promotes etnoteck, glitch-folk and post-national bass - the dirty local side of globalization force-fed back into a party without borders detonating the conglomerated mono-culture. DJ Joro-Boro hosted “MoGlo” (Modern Global) on Radio New York 91.5FM, has toured with Balkan Beat Box, and has performed with artists ranging from Bassnectar to Tinariwen.

This Bastille Day, the little OPERA theatre of ny, in partnership with Socrates Sculpture Park, will present an afternoon of free French opera with Liberte, Egalite, et Fraternite. Composers will include Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Francis Poulenc, Umberto Giordano, and Georges Bizet.

Chevalier de Saint-Georges, often called “The Black Mozart,” lived and fought during the revolution. Born in Guadeloupe, he was the son of a French Plantation owner and a slave who moved to Paris to live in Marie Antoinette’s court. The concert at Socrates Sculpture Park features music from his opera L’Amant anonyme, [1780], which tells the story of a lover who is afraid to reveal his true identity to the object of his affections.

Dialogues des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc was written during the twentieth century, but is set during the period of the French revolution. It looks at the events of the revolution and terror from the perspective of the nuns and clergy who maintained their ideals throughout the time of upheaval.

In Andrea Chénier, Italian verismo composer Umberto Giordano was inspired by events of the revolution, and the historical French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the final days of the “Reign of Terror.”

The spirit of the independence is embodied in what is perhaps the most iconic and popular of French operas, Carmen, by Georges Bizet. An operatic tribute to French culture would not be complete without it.

Featured in the concert are Emmy winning soprano Adrienne Danrich (Aida/Annapolis Opera, Tulsa Opera; This Little Light of Mine/Milwaukee Public Television; Serena, Porgy and Bess/Cincinnati Opera, Skylight Music Theater); mezzo soprano MaryAnn McCormick (Soeur Mathilde, Dialogues des Carmélites, Die Walküre/MET upcoming Suzuki, Madame Butterfly/Lyric Opera of Chicago; Dr. Sun Yat Sen/Santa Fe Opera); soprano Jennifer Moore (Mimì, La bohème; Ninetta, La gazza ladra (Bronx Opera); Dialogues des Carmélites, dell’Arte Opera Ensemble); baritone Robert Balonek (¡Figaro90210/Morningside Opera; upcoming: Handel’s Alceste/the American Classical Orchestra; Escamillo, Carmen/ Opera Hamilton); tenor Aubry Bryan (Mon Pauvre Coeur, Les Musique des Créoles Noirs, An Evening with Chevalier de Saint-Georges); and tenor Nicholas Simpson (Beethoven's Missa solemnis/Brooklyn Symphony; l sogno di Scipione/Gotham Opera, upcoming Silent Night/Fort Worth Opera).
