Barnard College and Summer on the Hudson present a celebration of women in music with some of finest musicians from NYC colleges and universities at an evening performance in an astounding setting.

Make Some Noise lineup:

Saman

Saman is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter from Washington D.C. She is now based in New York. Her music aims to make people feel a lot of feelings.

Liberty Zoo

Liberty Zoo is an eclectic, funk-pop band made up of five rowdy youngsters. Their boppin’ music is composed of looped vocals, tap dancing, rap, groovy guitar riffs, synth magic, and funky flute licks. Liberty Zoo is establishing itself as a rising band in New York, having opened for such artists as Alex Calder and most recently Big Sean at Columbia University’s Bacchanal festival. They will be releasing their debut EP in the fall and will be playing shows around the city all summer. To fully appreciate their fun-loving, dance-y energy, see them jam out live!

Luz Pinos

Luz Pinos is an Ecuadorian singer/composer based in NYC. Her music is a mixture of South American traditional rhythms put together into an improvisational personal style.

Sarah Dooley

Born in Indiana and currently based in Brooklyn, Sarah recently released her debut indie-pop album “Stupid Things," which was featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and ranked #17 on the iTunes pop charts. Her album has been covered by over thirty publications, including Huffington Post, Seventeen Magazine, and Refinery29. Sarah is a proud graduate of Barnard College, where she studied playwriting and, at one time, danced around as college mascot, Millie the Bear (it was the best day of her life).

Adi Meyerson Group

Adi Meyerson is an Israeli-raised Bassist and composer. She received her first musical training at the prestigious "Charles A. Smith Jerusalem High School of the Arts" on bass guitar at the age of 14. After graduating from high school, she discovered a love for Jazz and started playing the upright bass.

In August 2012, Adi relocated To New York to pursue her studies at "The New School for Jazz and Contemporary music", where she graduated from in 2014. In a brief period of 2.5 years, Adi has already started to make an impact on the NYC jazz scene and earn her title as an up and coming young talent. She has played and/or studied with many local greats; such as, Helen Sung, EJ Strickland, Wayne Escoffery, Bruce Edwards, Steve Carrington, Greg Bandy, Phillip Harper, Theo Hill, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Kirk Nurock, Billy Harper, Bob Cranshaw, Charli Persip, and many others. She can be found playing regularly around the NYC area in highly known venues; such as, Smalls Jazz, Mezzrow, Fat Cat, Bar Next Door, Dizzy's Coca Cola, Cleopatra's Needle, Webster Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, and others.

The Adi Meyerson Group was formed in May 2014, and has preformed in different formats in many venues around town. The group showcases Adi's music, while creating a collective and individual voice through the music.

Kick off the weekend with some fresh air while you drink in the sounds at this monthly musical get-happy hour. The Friday Freshen Up series takes place in West Harlem Piers Park on the last Friday of the month, May-August.

May 29 Kelly Zullo / Funk-slap-hammer-on acoustic guitar

Guitar World Magazine calls her music "An energetic acoustic guitar assault by this skilled, funky speed demon." Zullo approaches the ‘one man band set’ with a focused frenzy on the acoustic guitar technique and songs they are centered around. A standout from many one-individual shows, Zullo slaps and picks her acoustic at lightning speeds, weaving in and out of the loops on live drums she played just moments earlier. Her feet simultaneously play the bass via midi foot pedals.

Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums-and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

This fun-filled day kicks off at 12:00 p.m. with the Mils Trills Band playing entertaining summertime songs, and a musical storytelling performance by Play Me a Story.

Ongoing activities

Play

The astonishingly inventive pianist and composer Jason Moran unleashes his fun side in this “joyous and foolish and graceful” (NY Times) event, a hip-shaking, eye-popping spectacle complete with dancers and costumes that takes the stride innovator Fats Waller as a jumping off point to dig into grooves that flirt with everything from Motown to house to hip-hop. A McArthur Fellow and only the second person after the legendary Billy Taylor to hold the prestigious Artistic Advisor for Jazz post at the Kennedy Center (he has since been elevated to Artistic Director for Jazz), Moran has become one of the form’s truly compelling modern advocates, a restlessly creative force with a singular capacity to reveal jazz’s internal and external connections. Whether with his trio the Bandwagon or in any number of other ensembles he regularly performs with, he is among the most exciting musicians in the world today.

For all Moran’s skill and showmanship, Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9—a dazzling collision between the great New Orleans pianist, singer, and recent Brooklyn transplant Henry Butler, “a visionistical down-home cat and a hellified piano plunker to boot,” (Dr. John) and the retro-futurist trumpeter Steven Bernstein—will be a tough act to follow. The group, comprised of some of the finest players in town or anywhere, delves deeply into Butler’s native soil to conjure a sound that both revels in classic Crescent City grooves and takes them places others have never dreamed of going.

Summer on the Hudson's Children’s Performance Series runs on Thursdays from July 2 to July 30.

This event includes music, storytelling, and theater for young audiences up to age 7. Wear sunscreen! Stroller parking in designated area is mandatory.

Moona Luna is the kindie group that the New York Daily News says is providing “the missing soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural kids.” After making a splash on the family music scene with their accordion-driven, Latin-inspired debut album, Piñata Party (2011), Moona Luna delivered something fresh in its sophomore album, Vamos, Let's Go! (2013). Songwriter and bandleader, Sandra Velasquez, found inspiration in American pop hits of the 50’s and 60’s, and staying true to her bilingual mission, crafted Spanish and English lyrics for each song. Having bilingual lyrics is just the icing on the cake because the tunes are so finger-snapping good and cater to extremely wide audiences.
