With hard-hitting beats, politically aware rhymes, deft lyricism and strong song concepts, Dead Prez emerged in 2000 as one of rap’s most politically strident outfits. Consisting of Stic.man and M-1, Dead Prez’s music provided a voice for the voiceless, a sobering look at the global power structure that was crippling billions of people internationally and millions of Americans domestically. Individually and collectively, Stic and M-1 have been involved in political and community activism, pushing for progressive education for all people, teaching the merits of fitness and eating healthily and illustrating changes needed in American society and throughout the world. The duo’s first two studio albums, 2000s Lets Get Free and 2004s RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta, were accompanied by four acclaimed Turn Off The Radio Mixtapes and solo albums. In 2012, Dead Prez released their latest album, Information Age.

Brazilian cinema is celebrating the 11th edition of the Brazilian Film Festival of NY. This annual event honors the best and the brightest of Brazil’s innovative new cinema. As is tradition, the closing night film of the 11th Brazilian Film Festival of NY, presented outdoors at SummerStage in Central Park, will feature a performance by songstress Preta Gil, followed by the animated film, “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury.”

Preta Gil, the daughter of famous Brazilian singer and Ex-Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, has developed a unique personality while showcasing her ability to produce, sing, act and write songs. Since the start of her career in 2003, Gil has been mixing various genres and rhythms into her own songs, including elements of Folk, Samba, MPB, and Rock. In 2012, Gil released her 4th album, Sou Como Sou (As Am I), which celebrates 10 years of Gil’s illustrious career. Gil’s latest performance, O Bloco de Preta, has brought more than 300,000 people to Rio’s Carnival in 2013.

Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker and scriptwriter Luiz Bolognesi, Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury, is the first feature-length animated film to participate in Première Brazil, the competitive exhibition of the Rio Film Festival, in all 14 years of the festival’s existence. Targeting both youngsters and adults, with a graphic novel lineament and language, the film revolves around the love between Janaína and an Indian warrior who, upon dying, takes the form of a bird. For over six centuries, the couple’s story flourishes, passing through four phases of Brazil’s history: colonization, slavery, military regime and the future in 2096, when a war over water takes place.

Born in New York City, DJ Gaspar Muniz moved to Rio de Janeiro at an early age. His parents, the multi-media artist Maria Mattos and the photographer Vik Muniz, fostered an intensely artistic home environment and introduced him to famed Brazilian musicians such as Bebel Gilberto, Marisa Monte and Seu Jorge. Never attached to a specific genre, DJ Gaspar Muniz uses his cultural diversity and knowledge in his sets by mixing a variety of music styles from different places and eras.

<![CDATA[SOLD OUT: Metropolitan Entertainment Presents: Joan Baez / Indigo Girls]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/16/metropolitan-entertainment-presents-joan-baez-indigo-girls http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/16/metropolitan-entertainment-presents-joan-baez-indigo-girls Date: June 16, 2013

2008 and 2009 were landmark years for Joan Baez, respectively marking 50 years since she began her legendary residency at Boston’s famed Club 47 and 50 years since she made her debut at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. She remains a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable - marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, singing on the first Amnesty Interna-tional tour and just last year, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park. She brought the Free Speech Movement into the spotlight, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez, organized resistance to the war in Southeast Asia, then forty years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest the Iraq war. Her earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular, before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963. Amongst the many honors bestowed upon her, she has most recently been the recipient of the highly prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, the greatest honor that the Recording Academy can bestow (2007). Day After Tomorrow, her first new studio album in five years (2008) has been praised by critics and was nominated for a Grammy award.

Decades into their career, the Indigo Girls still amaze conventional punditswith their ability to grow and thrive no matter what the state of the musicindustry is at any given point. Emily Saliers and Amy Ray began performing together in high school, and transferred their honest, urgent performing style onto the stages of countless small clubs, then saw their public profile take off with the 1989 release of their self-titled breakthrough. The duo went on to win Best Contemporary Folk Recording at the 1990 Grammys. The pair’s constant touring, as well as a staunch dedication to a number of social and environmental causes, has earned them a fervidly devoted following over the years. Glide Magazine says of the duo's 14th studio album, “Beauty Queen Sister is a real testament to the deftness with which Saliers and Ray approach songwriting and their keen ear for harmony-- both of which show few signs of wavering.”

The Comedy of Errors, one of William Shakespeare's earliest plays, is a comical tale about two sets of twins who were separated at birth and now live in neighboring cities . When Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, visit Ephesus they are mistaken for Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus, and thus begins the never ending mayhem of mistaken identity.
