Erik Benson’s paintings depict the landscape of everyday metropolitan life, created with thousands of shapes hand-cut from dried sheets of acrylic paint. Benson uses this painstaking compositional technique to capture the complexity of urban development, with its interplay of construction and creative destruction, density and emptiness. Familiar cityscapes emerge as more complex than they initially appear.

Originally I was interested in creating a painting vocabulary that depicted the plasticity and temporality of unexamined things such as playgrounds and construction sites,” says Benson. “These interests have been growing into ideas and concerns that deal with the urban landscape, such as how cities grow and shrink, and what these issues mean to the inhabitants.”

In these vivid new paintings, Benson considers the role and impact of playgrounds, trees and parks within evolving communities, often setting the saturated colors and bold shapes of play equipment and dynamic tree branch patterns against the muted backdrops of the surrounding buildings. Inspired by his neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, he creates works that are not precise representations, but rather archetypes, at once foreboding and optimistic.

Students from the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation present a photography exhibition entitled Changing Lenses at Poe Park Visitors Center. The exhibition marks the beginning of a new program that expands arts education for young scientists, and brings their work beyond the walls of the school into the community at large.

Throughout the Spring 2013 semester, nine students in grades 9 – 11 gathered for weekly after-school sessions with UASWC art instructor Jessica Sinclair and teaching artist Mustafa Önder. Using SLR cameras, nine students were introduced to the fundamentals of photography. Emphasis was placed on the communicative properties of image-making: composition, storytelling, and conceptualization. Photographic outings were undertaken throughout the local community, to the Bronx Zoo, and to Bryant Park in Manhattan. The group also took a field trip to the International Center of Photography, where they received a guided tour by a museum educator.

The project is sponsored by Joy of Givings Something, Inc. (JGS), a not-for-profit organization that promotes the art of photography.

This is the first in a series of lectures on urban cemeteries as historic landscapes, in an effort to encourage greater awareness of New York City’s cemeteries, public and private.

Christopher Vernon, an associate professor in the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts at the University of Western Australia, has done extensive research on designed national capitals such as Canberra, New Delhi and Brasilia. He is an authority on Walter Burley Griffin, the Chicago architect and landscape architect who designed Canberra, and on his wife and collaborator, architect Marion Mahony Griffin, both of whom worked at different times for Frank Lloyd Wright. Vernon wrote the introduction to the Library of American Landscape History (LALH) edition of The Prairie Spirit in Landscape Gardening (1915) by Wilhelm Miller, a volume in the ASLA Centennial Reprint Series. Also published by the University of Massachusetts Press in association with LALH is Graceland Cemetery: A Design History, hailed for its exhaustive research which places Graceland Cemetery in the context of Chicago’s urban development.

7:00 PM – All Levels Open Dance Master Class by: Jamal Jackson Dance Company
8:00 PM – Performances

Jamal Jackson Dance Company (JJDC) was founded with the purpose of fusing various traditional African dance styles with modern and Hip-Hop techniques while incorporating diverse musical styles in order to create a technique that is relevant to a diverse community of Americans. Through the company's signature style, which is characterized by looseness in the arms, hips and spine, fast footwork, and a constant bounce, the choreography weaves together to tell stories that redefine ideas of community and blur divisive lines, while still celebrating the beauty of individual cultures. Footprints From My Head's Rhythm is a direct representation of the choreographic themes at the core of JJDC with each piece exploring a different aspect of reconciling the need for people to maintain individuality while being accepted into a community.

JJDC will perform “Bask in The Shade,” a piece that explores the “benchmark” for certain levels of acceptance and inclusion into various social circles. This work, composed by Frank Malloy IV, takes an in-depth look at the influence of surroundings on the individual while also challenging external and internal physical boundaries.

Originally founded in 2004, the Brooklyn based Movement for the Urban Village is a contemporary dance company that relies on a community of women dancers of varied identity and life experience who join together to present dance works addressing social, political and spiritual themes. Under the direction of Shalewa Mackall, Movement for the Urban Village performs original contemporary dance rooted in the creative expression, a modality for healing and means for liberation on every level for all people. Since 2005, Movement for the Urban Village has presented six consecutive seasons of original dance in New York City.

Choreographed and directed by Shalewa Mackall, Calling Names is an original dance and theatre work that incorporates live music to explore issues of identity, lineage and personal transformation as the audience is taken on a journey from personhood to spirit hood.

Master Class: Company members of Jamal Jackson Dance Company will teach energetic, full-body movement that flows fluidly between West African, Hip-Hop and Modern dance techniques.

Mavis Staples' voice “possesses a sultry, burnt-sugar glow…she turns a simple pop song into a lament that could move a listener to tears." (NPR) The church-infused soul legend won a host of new fans with her 2010 Grammy-winning Jeff Tweedy collaboration, You Are Not Alone, and she remains "one of the world's mightiest gospel pop singers." (Time) Staples shares the bill with the iconoclastic genius Cody ChesnuTT, who combined funk, soul, hip hop, rock, and blues on his 2002 double album, The Headphone Masterpiece, went quiet, and then returned a decade later in stunning form with last year’s Landing on a Hundred.

Puzzlemaster Will Shortz and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! host Peter Sagal walk into a bar... No, it's not the start of a joke. It's the essence of NPR's and WNYC's Ask Me Another, a rambunctious show that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music. Host Ophira Eisenberg invites guests and listeners alike to stretch their noggins, tickle their funny bones, and enjoy witty banter and guitar riffs from the Ask Me Another one-man house band, Jonathan Coulton.

Join Eisenberg as she puts questions to a rotating band of puzzle gurus, contestants and special VIP’s (that’s Very Important Puzzlers), who then take a turn in the puzzle hot seat facing trivia games written especially for him or her. What you'll hear resembles the casual intimacy of game night at a friend's house: one where scores are forgotten in favor of hilarious gaffes.

SummerStage attendees can play along as the on-stage contestants take a turn in the puzzle hot seat at this special live recording of the famed variety show. The night’s VIP’s include singer/songwriter Nellie McKay, New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor Will Shortz, host of WNYC’s Studio 360 Kurt Andersen, comedian and director David Wain and NBC’s The Office alum B.J.
