As part of its Outdoor Cinema 2014 season, Socrates Sculpture Park will be screening Microcosmos, a French film directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou. Microcosmos features some of the most gorgeous macro-photography of insects ever put on screen. Shooting with custom cameras and lenses that took three years to develop, the filmmakers turn a French meadow into an otherwordly adventure as its denizens—a seemingly infinite variety of bugs—crawl, fly, creep, and leap. This is an amazing voyage into a surprising and often humorous miniature universe, a surreal, wordless visual treat for children and adults alike. More here.

Pre-screening performances and food begin at 7pm; screening begins at sundown.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international film festival that takes place every Wednesday evening in July and August. Focusing on a different country or culture each screening, this program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the waterfront breeze, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen.

As part of its Outdoor Cinema 2014 season, Socrates Sculpture Park will be screening the Italian film Umberto D., directed by Vittorio De Sica. A neorealist masterpiece from De Sica (The Bicycle Thief), Umberto D.follows a few days in the life of the title character, a retired bureaucrat: the police break up his pensioners’ strike; a canteen hostess catches him feeding his lunch to his dog, Flike; his landlady threatens him with eviction; a sympathetic young maid reveals she’s pregnant; and pride quashes his attempts to beg in front of the Pantheon. Umberto D. is bursting with life – a heartfelt tale of a man struggling to hold onto his dignity in the face of ageism and a changing, postwar Italy.

Following Umberto D. will be Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, with filmmaker Maxim Pozdorovkin in person. Rated R for explicit sexual content. Not appropriate for audiences under 17.

Directed by Maxim Pozdorovkin and Mike Lerner, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer tells the story of Russian punk-rock activists Pussy Riot--Katia, Masha, and Nadia--who staged a balaclava-masked performance at a Moscow cathedral (protesting the head of the Orthodox Church for supporting Putin's campaign) and earned the wrath of the regime. Their arrest and trial for "hooliganism" against the church follows. A fascinating documentary portrait of a courageous, defiant collective whose impact continues to be felt worldwide.

MAKERS is a six-part PBS series profiling the impact women have had over the past 50 years in six industries—comedy, politics, space, war, business, and Hollywood. MAKERS aims to be the largest and most dynamic collection of women’s stories ever assembled.

Women in Space traces the history of women pioneers in the U.S. space program and features the next generation of women engineers, mathematicians, and astronauts — the new group of pioneers who continue to make small but significant steps forward.

After the film, Rori Baldari, Amateur Astronomer’s Association will give a brief talk followed by stargazing (weather permitting).

Rori Baldari has been stargazing since 1970, when she got her first telescope as a Christmas gift from her mother. One of her earliest inspirations was Dr. Carolyn Porco, leader of the Rings Imaging Team on the Voyager mission to the outer planets. As a Board member of the Amateur Astronomers Association Of NY, Rori is very active in public outreach and enjoys showing the night sky to anyone willing to step up to the eyepiece.

Filmmakers Terri Marlowe and Curtis Cates’ documentary, Peace Through Understanding: The 1964/65 New York World’s Fair, interweaves recollections of numerous World’s Fair participants with archival footage, photos, and period music for a behind-the-scenes and historical account of the event. It incorporates three main themes: it is a story of dreams realized and not; it conveys the feeling of a city built and torn down; and it illuminates the small world of peace through understanding which was envisioned but not achieved.

Rather than a stock “day-at-the-fair” movie, the story is told from numerous viewpoints by the men and women who were there and involved at many levels (pavilion owners, operators and employees. representatives of the 1964/65 New York World’s Fair Corporation, fairgoers, historians, collectors, and curators). They offer insights not only into the Fair, but into the times in which it occurred. The film incorporates their reminiscences and insights into the historical context of the event, and the site itself, as it evolved from an ash dump to the 1939/40 New York World’s Fair, to the temporary headquarters of the United Nations, to the 1964/65 World’s Fair and then, in 1967, to its current state as a New York City park.

The World of Tomorrow is a feature documentary that looks at the great 1939 New York World’s Fair. Five years in the making, this critically acclaimed film uses home movies, newsreels, industrial and promotional films, cartoons, still photographs and other vintage graphics to study the Art Deco extravaganaza that was the World’s Fair.

Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Don't Look Back

Arguably the greatest music documentary ever. Bob Dylan’s 1965 British tour, intimately recorded by legendary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker, reveals the genius/enfant terrible at the height of his growling ‘60s counter-culture persona, whether astonishing audiences with Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, Subterranean Homesick Blues, or The Times They Are A-Changin’ –or torturing a TIME magazine reporter with Sphinx-like responses. The opening sequence, with Dylan in the alleyway, discarding placards on which his lyrics are scrawled, has become a culturally iconic moving image that has been ripped off ad infinitum. See the original.

1967, 96 minutes. Directed by D.A. Pennebaker.

Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series.

The quintessential "backstage" musical 42nd Street traces the history of a Broadway musical comedy, from casting call to opening night. Warner Baxter plays famed director Julian Marsh, who despite failing health is determined to stage one last great production, "Pretty Lady." Others involved include "Pretty Lady" star Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels); Dorothy's "sugar daddy" (Guy Kibbee), who finances the show; her true love Pat (George Brent); leading man Billy Lawlor (Dick Powell); and starry-eyed chorus girl Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler). It practically goes without saying that Dorothy twists her ankle the night before the premiere, forcing Julian Marsh to put chorine Peggy into the lead: "You're going out there a youngster, but you've got to come back a star!" Delightfully corny, with hilarious wisecracking support from the likes of Ginger Rogers, Una Merkel, and George E. Stone. 42nd Street is perhaps the most famous of Warners' early-1930s Busby Berkeley musicals. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, 42nd Street is highlighted by such grandiose musical setpieces as "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," "Young and Healthy," and of course the title song. Nearly fifty years after its premiere, it was successfully revived as a Broadway musical with Tammy Grimes and Jerry Orbach. - Paraphrase from Swank website.

Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Live-In Maid

Pre-screening performances at 7 PM, film begins at sundown

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries.

2005, 83 minutes. Directed by Jorge Gaggero.

In a kind of prequel of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent tells the story of the title character, played by Angelina Jolie, who engages in a life-changing battle. As ruler of her land, she fights the king who rules the neighboring land, and meets and falls in love with his son, Stefan. When Stefan grows up, he turns on Maleficent, causing her to vengefully kidnap his first child, Sleeping Beauty. Rated PG.

Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris' trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Writer/director John Hughes once again tries to wed satire, slapstick, and social commentary, as Ferris Bueller's Day Off starts like a house afire and goes on to make "serious" points about status-seeking and casual parental cruelties. It brightens up considerably in the last few moments, when Ferris' tattletale sister (Jennifer Grey) decides to align herself with her merry prankster sibling.

One of the stars of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, is re-united with that film's composer and lyricist, Richard M.Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, in this big budget and bloodless children's fantasy musical, based on the children's book by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Van Dyke plays Caractacus Potts, a failed inventor who lives in a big house with his two children, Jemima Heather Ripley and Jeremy Adrian Hall, and eccentric father Lionel Jeffries. Potts has to raise 30 shillings so his children can buy a broken-down racing car from the junkyard. After a disastrous attempt to sell his invention of whistling sweets to Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson-Justice), the local candy maker, he finally gets enough money for the car by doing a Dick Van Dyke dance routine at the county fair. Potts takes the car and miraculously transforms the vehicle into a shiny new car named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. While on a picnic with the children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), Lord Scrumptious' beautiful daughter, Potts concocts a fantasy tale about the magical powers of the car, which can now float on water and fly. In the tale, Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe) wants the car for himself and kidnaps the automobile and the inventor. But Bomburst captures Grandpa by mistake along with the wrong car, so Potts, Truly, and the children have to enlist Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on a rescue mission to Bomburst's lair to save Grandpa. CANCELLED -- Rain date on August 26th, 2015

The life and loves of French pop star Serge Gainsbourg are reimagined by comic book artist Joann Sfar, beginning with his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, through his wild and crazy years in the ‘50s and ‘60s as a singer-songwriter and lover of some of the world’s most glamourous women (Bardot, Jane Birkin, beatnik icon Juliette Gréco). The film features many of the musician’s greatest hits, as well a giant puppet alter-ego who personifies his worst proclivities. (Note: Due to some nudity, this film is not recommended for children.)

Perhaps the greatest movie ever shot in two days, Little Shop of Horrors was originally conceived as a followup to Roger Corman's black comedy A Bucket of Blood (1959). Jonathan Haze plays Seymour Krelboin, a schlemiel's schlemiel who works at the Skid Row flower shop of Mr. Mushnick (Mel Welles). Experimenting in his spare time, Seymour develops a new plant species that he hopes will lead him to fame and fortune. Unfortunately, the mutated plant -- named Audrey Junior, in honor of Seymour's girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph)—subsists on blood and human flesh. It also talks, or rather, commands: "Feed Me! FEEEEED ME!" Before long, the luckless Seymour has fed his plant the bodies of a railroad detective, a sadistic dentist, and a flashy trollop. Meanwhile, Mr. Mushnik, who has stumbled onto Seymour's secret, has inadvertently offered up a burglar (played by Charles Griffith, who also wrote the script and supplied the plant's voice) as a midnight snack for the voracious, ever-growing Audrey Junior. (When the plant blooms, the faces of its various victims are reproduced in its flowers.) Paraphrase from Swank website.

In this documentary shot in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the world center for ship-breaking, huge megaton behemoths are run aground and broken apart by men and boys who earn $2 a day. Remarkably beautiful cinematography affords indelible insights into how some of the most exploited people on earth retain their courage, decency and fortitude. A.O. Scott in The New York Times writes: “an unsettling hybrid of art and witness… the vivid record of a complex reality. The way it turns blunt, material facts into sublime images is both astonishing and troubling.”

Modern Ruin tells the story of Philip Johnson's New York State Pavilion during the glory days of the fair, and chronicles its demise over the past 50 years. The film details its post-fair use as a 60s concert venue and 70s roller rink, including the years of neglect as well as the recent advocacy efforts to save and repurpose the structure.

Executive producers, Jake Gorst and Tracey Rennie Gorst. Matthew Silva is a teacher, filmmaker, and Co-founder of People for the Pavilion. Born in Flushing but raised in Suffolk County, Matthew would pass the New York State Pavilion and like many people, would wonder what it was. His curiosity has led him making a film about the structure in an effort to make it easier for people to learn about its significance. Matthew is a believer in design and its power to change communities, politics, the environment, and the world.

Hollywood, 1927: the silent-film romantic team of Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) is the toast of Tinseltown. While Lockwood and Lamont personify smoldering passions onscreen, in real life the down-to-earth Lockwood can't stand the egotistical, brainless Lina. He prefers the company of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), whom he met while escaping his screaming fans. Watching these intrigues from the sidelines is Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), Don's best pal and on-set pianist. Cosmo is promoted to musical director of Monumental Pictures by studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell) when the talking-picture revolution commences. That's all right for Cosmo, but how will talkies affect the upcoming Lockwood-Lamont vehicle "The Dueling Cavalier"? Don, an accomplished song-and-dance man, should have no trouble adapting to the microphone. Lina, however, is another matter; put as charitably as possible, she has a voice that sounds like fingernails on a blackboard. The disastrous preview of the team's first talkie has the audience howling with derisive laughter. On the strength of the plot alone, concocted by the matchless writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Singin' in the Rain is a delight. Paraphrase from Swank website.

“The name of my stallion is King of the Wind. My mare is called Electric Queen and she electrocutes all who get in her way…” This incredible introduction to the head-spinning Sonepur Fair, a festival held at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, comes from the Horse Breeder, who, along with the Showman, the Rider, the Exorcist, the Dancer and the Mahut (elephant tamer) comprise the cast. Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series. All films are screened outside in NYC's great outdoors and they are free!

Newly arrived in California from New Jersey, teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio) almost immediately runs afoul of karate-trained high school bullies. He is rescued by Japanese janitor Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), who agrees to teach Daniel how to harness karate for good instead of brutality. The film culminates in a championship karate bout, pitting Daniel against his sworn enemy Johnny (William Zabka) -- the cruel and thuggish boyfriend of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), with whom Daniel has fallen in love (and vice versa). Vastly popular, The Karate Kid spawned three sequels of rapidly descending merit, as well as a Saturday-morning cartoon series.

The movie is shown outside so bring a chair or blanket. Space is limited and admission is on a first come-first serve basis. Recreational activities begin at 7:30 p.m. The movie will be shown at dusk.

Dissensions can take many forms: a soon-to-be-divorced couple bickering; a brood of misfit animals squabbling; an all-female band debating the very definition of their feminism. With unfailing shrewdness, the following shorts depict various clashes and the intense relationships that trigger them. Sharing a penchant for naturalism and distaste for gender binaries, these clever films are further proof of Swedish cinema’s incredible vitality.

Short Films

  • "I Turn to You", 2015, 15 minutes, directed by Victor Lindgren.
  • "Bath House", 2014, 15 minutes, directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr.
  • "Pussy Have the Power", 2014, 14 minutes, directed by Lovisa Sirén.

Additional shorts to be added. Please note: Due to graphic language, this evening is not recommended for children.

Programmed by Rooftop Films. There will be pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

The first film directed by a Saudi woman, Wadja tells the charming, poignant story of a 10-year-old girl who longs for a bicycle so she can race her best friend (a boy) and attain some measure of independence in a society whose restrictions on women begin early. Without a hint of didacticism or bitterness, this child’s tiny rebellion, ironically, leads her to compete in a Koran-reciting contest.

Now celebrating its 17th year, the festival features open-air cinema, music, dance, and food, held in the 5-acre waterfront park in Long Island City, Queens. Admission is free.

“I cannot explain myself, I’m afraid, sir” said Alice, “because I’m not myself you see.” – Lewis Carroll. His Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. No one has done justice to the infinitely creepy quality of Carroll’s fantasy of childhood disorientation better than master Czech animator Jan Svankmajer. A live-action Alice encounters both animated animals (the White Rabbit looking like a taxidermist’s nightmare) and objects (have knee socks ever been so scary?) on her trip down the existential rabbit hole.

Please note: This movie is not recommended for young children.

1988, 84 minutes. Directed by Jan Svankmajer.
