Join a curatorial fellow for a tour of three current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Gregory Crewdson’s Fireflies series is being shown for the first time in its entirety; Crewdson’s photographs capture the fleeting light of these nocturnal creatures. In the Sunroom Project Space, Lauren Carly Shaw transforms the space into the setting of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1899), set in the late 19th century, when the original Glyndor House was constructed. Shaw chronicles the effect of confinement on a woman’s mental state. In the Sun Porch space, Reade Bryan’s sculptural installation investigates the way that iconic building materials, such as plywood and drywall supplies, are created and used. Here he evokes the effects of a flood or the mass of a cliff’s edge; the natural landscape appears to intrude on the interior, although the sculpture itself is made of domestic building material.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

When Tasha Cobbs took the stage on June 14, 2012 at Northview Christian Church, in Montgomery, Alabama, she did so neither as a nationally renowned vocalist, nor as a recording artist making her major-label debut. Instead, with microphone in hand, she ascended the platform prepared to do what she had done every week since her teenage years—lead the congregation into worship. Cobbs won her first-ever Grammy for Best Gospel/Contemporary Music Performance for “Break Every Chain.” in 2014, from her album, Grace, a moving example of the raw power of a live worship experience. Produced by multi-award-winning artist and producer VaShawn Mitchell, the eight-song project reveals Tasha at her best as a psalmist, songwriter, and minister. A pastor’s kid and long-time worship leader, Tasha has developed her gifts as a songwriter and psalmist to become a nationally recognized minister. She currently serves as Worship Leader for the Young Adult Division of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, while simultaneously holding the position of Worship Pastor at the dReam Center Church of Atlanta. With the release of Grace, Tasha Cobbs is sure to become a recognized name in churchgoing households across the nation.

The 2002 release of Smokie Norful’s debut album I Need You Now, heralded the birth of a new Gospel legend. That project, led by the instantly classic title song, achieved gold-certification while winning the first of the numerous awards that would mark his truly groundbreaking career. In the decade since then, Smokie has sold more than two million albums, earned four #1 albums, received countless GRAMMY®, Dove, and Stellar awards, and has twice been named Billboard magazine’s “Gospel Artist of the Year.” Meanwhile, audiences around the world have come to embrace him as songwriter, balladeer, worshipper, and preacher.

Pastor Charles Jenkins is a dynamic, inspirational and visionary religious and community leader who is widely known as the senior pastor of the legendary Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois. He is the author of the book, Thriving In Change, and is a sought-after adviser to governmental and political leaders, high-profile personalities, business groups, and advocacy organizations. Perhaps less known is the fact that Charles Jenkins is a GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter and a recording artist. His CD project with Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church—Pastor Charles Jenkins Presents Fellowship Chicago Live: The Best of Both Worlds, was released in 2012. Jenkins believes that music can be the basis of an urban Christian movement that attracts people in ways that many traditional mediums cannot. “There are opportunities to create amazing music and to create a meaningful movement around that music,” he said. “For us, this is not just a CD, it a movement for God and good that begins with this project.”

Six-time Stellar Award-winner and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist VaShawn Mitchell soared to the top of the charts in 2011 with his mega-hit single “Nobody Greater,” from his top-selling, award-winning album Triumphant. Billboard magazine declared “Nobody Greater” the #1 Most Played Gospel Song of 2011, and the single held the #1 position for nine consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart and crossed-over to the Urban Contemporary Adult charts. Now the acclaimed singer-songwriter is back with Created 4 This, which picks up where Triumphant left off. This project is a body of music that features Mitchell’s signature style: contemporary themes with a traditional Gospel vibe. The praise and worship music on the CD is encouraging, inspiring, and uplifting. “I wanted to build on ‘Nobody Greater’ and Triumphant to create a new compilation of music to empower and equip people in this economy to understand why we are here and what we are created for,” says Mitchell. “The whole message of the album is that we still have hope, that we shall overcome and be victorious, and that God will be there to sustain us in this next phase of our lives.”

Kierra Sheard is a Grammy Award-nominated, GMA Dove Award and Stellar Award-winning recording artist and songwriter. The daughter of Karen Clark Sheard, of the legendary Clark Sisters, and Bishop J. Drew Sheard, senior pastor of Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God In Christ in Detroit, Michigan, Kierra first came to the world’s attention as a nine year old, belting out vocals well beyond her years in a live recording of the hit, “The Will Of God,” which was on her mother’s 1997 solo debut release, Finally Karen. Until that point, Kierra had shown little interest in being a singer, and the family was unaware of her exceptional talent. “I didn’t want to do the song with my mother and she had to make me practice,” Kierra recalls. However, after her performance with her mother, offers for recording deals started to pour in. By 2003, Kierra had a label deal with EMI Gospel, which propelled her into music stardom—churning out hits that showed her vocal prowess and diversity, such as “You Don’t Know,” “Love Like Crazy,” “Praise Him Now,” and “Invisible.”

Nearly every song ever recorded tackles the topic of love. It’s long been the favored subject for songwriters and poets through the ages, but when an artist turns his focus to the love of Jesus, the result is bound to be powerful, especially when that artist is the multi-talented worship leader, songwriter and producer Micah Stampley. Love Never Fails is Stampley’s sixth album and his debut on Motown Gospel. The project spotlights the passionate vocal delivery and compelling songwriting that have made him one of the gospel community’s most acclaimed young artists. Stampley and his wife Heidi co-wrote six of the eleven tunes on the new album including the exhilarating and emotionally charged worship song “We Will Praise You.” Stampley’s music has long had a global flavor and that approach continues on Love Never Fails. “How He Loves Me” is an infectious reggae tune that features vocals from the talented Jamaican songstress Chevelle Franklyn, and “Oh Give Thanks” will remind listeners of the sheer joy that comes from praising God in song.

Brian Courtney Wilson was raised in the Chicago, Illinois area. Since his childhood, Wilson has been singing, starting with the adult male chorus at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church. “Before my mom and dad knew I was going to be a singer, God had given them a promise to nurture into the person that I am today,” he says. “We are all given some promise, some vision for our future that we have to nurture, endure hard times for, and always believe in.” Wilson has nurtured his promise into a remarkable career in music ministry. Since the release of his debut CD, Just Love, Wilson has been touted as one of gospel music’s contemporary break-through artists of 2010 and 2011. Wilson says Music World Gospel has become the perfect home for his sacred art: “It’s a place where I can do more than just church music. I can do music for the world that’s rooted in the church.”

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

"Dance Off the Grid" (OTG) is the latest iteration of the Museum of Arts and Design "Dance Under the Influence" hailed as a must-see “eclectic performance series” by The New Yorker, and curated by arts writer, Valerie Gladstone. Fresh from a successful season at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck, OTG features the top talent of contemporary dance, ranging from modern to hip hop, salsa to Indian dance in performances as engrossing to newcomers to dance as to seasoned fans.

Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY focuses on the fusion of African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. This work provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of African forms and rhythms. Evidence tours to some 30 communities in the United States annually. It has traveled to Cuba, Brazil, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Hawaii, Ireland, Holland, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, and in 2010 joined the U.S. State Department’s DanceMotion USA tour to perform, teach master classes and conduct demonstrations. Evidence brings arts, education and cultural/historical connections to communities that have historically lacked these experiences. Annually, the company reaches and audience of more than 30,000.Join them as they perform Come Ye, a piece inspired by the music and sociopolitical legacies of artists/activists Nina Simone and Fela Kuti. This multimedia work utilizes Mr. Brown’s signature style of kinetic storytelling through African, Caribbean, modern, ballet and social dance styles to summon warriors, angels and activists dedicated to the pursuit of liberation and peace amidst the strug- gles of human conflict. This work includes music by Nina Simone (“Come Ye,” “Sunday in Savannah,” and “Revolution”) and Fela Kuti (“Kalakuta” and “Coffin for Head of State”) and a video collage by Robert Penn.

Her desire to continue learning led her to Spain where she became soloist/ dance captain with of Compania Maria Pages and Compania Antonio El Pipa, performing at prestigious flamenco festivals and television in Spain such as the Bienal del Arte Flamenco and touring throughout France, Italy, UK, Germany and Japan. Since returning to the U.S. she has performed in World Music Institute’s “Gypsy Caravan”, the dance company Noche Flamenca, and was a featured flamenco star in the highly acclaimed show “Riverdance” on Broadway. The Sa Dance Company's mission is to increase the awareness of Indian dance in the mainstream. Founder and Artistic Director, Payal Kadakia, has earned acclaim for her creative choreography and mastery of many traditions. Sa serves as a platform to celebrate the Indian-American identity by exploring contemporary movements that are fundamentally rooted in traditional Indian dance. All company dancers are extensively trained in various Indian classical and folk styles such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Oddissi, Rajasthani and Garba & Raas. The Sa Dance Company has performed at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, Peabody Essex Museum, Museum of Art & Design, Emelin Theater, and NYC Fashion Week. Urban Theatre Movement's Handball, written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and directed by Brenda Banda delivers an explosive take on gentrification in New York City. The play tracks a park filled with characters as unique and diverse as the city itself. Tempers flare as new transplants work to make their mark while old residents struggle to maintain their way of life. Over the course of two hot, summer days we watch a once lively, buoyant park become extremely tense as each character struggles to find their way and survive while witnessing their neighborhood falling apart. Stories become intertwined, power is shifted and change reveals itself to be inevitable. Handball tells the story of modern-day urban America and the people struggling to find their way in it.

The last year or so has certainly been a wild and wonderful ride for Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg: from years dedicated to busking the streets of towns and cities across the globe, to worldwide recognition. Long before Passenger's unmistakable voice unexpectedly found a home on mainstream radio waves around the world, Rosenberg was committed to taking his music to the people literally one street at a time. When the Brighton UK-born artist's band broke up in 2007, Rosenberg inadvertently set about forging his own musical path as a genuine troubadour. He held onto the band's name, and began travelling across countries and continents, armed with only his guitar and his voice and a swag of unique songs. After nearly three years of travelling and three albums, Passenger had established itself as one of the most popular new acts on the Australian live circuit and started to regularly sell out rooms and theatres of 500-plus. It wasn't until the release of his second single, "Let Her Go," on his 4th album that the rest of the world began to tune in. "Let Her Go" has topped the 2.5 million mark in global sales, as well as over 78 million YouTube hits so far. Of course, you can still catch Passenger busking in almost every city he visits -- only nowadays, it's pretty much standing-room only!

Born to a Jamaican father and British mother, Liam Bailey’s musical influences range from soul to reggae, and punk to R&B. While his voice is often compared to that of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, he’s as likely to reference Etta James as he is The Smiths. Known for co-writing Chase & Status’ Top 5 smash: “Blind Faith feat. Liam Bailey,” Liam’s initial introduction to the music business came via the late Amy Winehouse who, after meeting him released his first 2 EPs on her Lioness Records imprint. Amy first heard Liam’s music through a mutual friend & acclaimed producer Salaam Remi, who amongst others, is working with Liam on his debut album. The album, which was also co-written and produced by Bailey will be released by Flying Buddha (Sony Music Masterworks) in August, coinciding with a U.S. tour.

Stu Larsen was born in the town of Dalby, in Australia, a close-knit, religious community of less than 10,000 people. Nothing much happened in Dalby and that was pretty much how folks liked it. Predictability was what made people feel comfortable and Stu's career in a local Bank meant that by the age of 23, his life was pretty well mapped out for him.
In 2010, whilst working on the 'Boy and Bear' tour in Australia, Stu met Mike Rosenberg (of 'Passenger'), back in the days when money was tight and touring meant shared rooms and forged close friendships. Mike was moved by the quality of Stu's insightful material and invited him to support and tour-manage him. Alongside the madness and fame brought about for Mike by the massive success of 'Let Her Go', Stu kept on doing what he loves best - just travelling, sharing his music and taking pictures - but now with much broader horizons and to much larger audiences, building up a stronger and stronger following along the road. Stu has already achieved a #2 on the Australian singer-songwriter chart. Amazingly - and almost uniquely, this was been achieved without management or the backing of a label and was funded entirely by the sale of albums at gigs along his journey. Now, for 2014, Stu plans an album release and a solo tour of Australia, the UK, Europe and America.

Tony winner Daniel Sullivan directs Shakespeare’s classic drama about a King who loses everything—including his mind—when he disowns his favorite daughter, and finds himself betrayed in return.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Treat your child to a day camp like they've only imagined at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century and dressed in period style clothing, campers learn about the Van Cortlandt Family and the history that happened here all while having fun.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2014. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.
